Title: Update on the Miata. Plenty of pics
Post by: DasPoop on February 15, 2012, 02:29:18 PM
So I got the miata I knew some ricer asian owned it, It came with all the parts just someone who had no idea what he was doing,
So far I have redone the kit to include things like bolts that all match, gaskets, ya know the shit most people think of. It needed an oil line so I found a slick banjo to -4 adaptor at a local speed shop along with the metric banjo bolt. The oil return leaves a bit to be desired but it works dammit. I also built and installed a megasquirt and picked up a slick new innovative gauge/sensor/controller all in one. there is still a lot of little odds and ends to finish up before I can do some highway rippers but it shouldnt be too far out.
Setup is
Ebay Manifold
13g dsm turbo
rre flange and 2.5" dp
godspeed IC
turbo xs rfl(someone trade me for something less gay and yes a ssqv is more gay)
some denso inj(not sure on flow but pw isnt a whole lot ad its still 11.1 at idle

ok so for some pics

I am hoping so, has some decent suspension and all new bushings on most all of the f/r suspe.sions. a month ago i would never have considered a miata but its actually a cool little car. Like a little panoz espirante.

If you let me drive that down here, I'll test flow a bunch of your injectors. Looks good so far, esp the "tap" for the wideband.

Sure i need someone to drive while i tune. we can rip on it for sure. 8psi out of that dinky turbo shouldnt be stressing the motor too much stock rods are good to 250 ft/lbs reliably.

I ran ~14psi daily on a 14b.  8 psi will still feel slow.  Lookin good so far  :noel:

I just moved across town got a bigger place with daswife. With the dogs the 1br was pretty cramped. Atleast now i will have a 3 car garage  :noel:

Update: so its getting a 14b the turbo that was on the car was JUNK!!! no shaft play but more cracks than a side street in detroit. Was spewing oil into the turbine housing.

Also got all the interior put back together what a bitch that was with the 6 big ass cables coming out of the wideband.

how does a 14b compare to the turbo on the mazadaspeed miatas?

I've hear the Mazdaspeed's IHI sucks nuts.

My 14b did pretty good on my '96.  241rwhp and insta-spool

mazdaspeed stock turbos are terrible. Laggy and restrictive. If someone gave me one, I'd sell it, not use it.

Some pics to start
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi824.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz167%2FSlotRacer%2FIMAG0257.jpg&hash=725acfdb7531424381c65547b63c2edc15a3dbde)
Finished up my dash more or less Need a radio or a block off plate havent decided.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi824.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz167%2FSlotRacer%2FIMAG0253.jpg&hash=d08d6ddd4d734328d59b6344814c1ef6748d8a00)
Decided this was the best place to mount the MS easy to unplug to flood clear/compression test etc. Also i dont have to pull the carpet up if i wanted to update firmware etc.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi824.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz167%2FSlotRacer%2FIMAG0256.jpg&hash=f112f83a1a6683f42d1bf8bcf811b4cd9088a6bf)
Just the harness that goes to the MS fits perfect in its current location. I wrapped the connections under the carpet and factory ecu cover with a chunk of a sleeve so nothing would short out. You can also see the dedicated nylon map sensor line I ran.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi824.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz167%2FSlotRacer%2FIMAG0255.jpg&hash=31896127d21aa0b0383678efef8e4186f2a8ff43)
another shot of the map sensor line. Needed a T so I raided this shitty old boost controller I had and took the ball and spring out of it so its just an open T the line goes to the boost gauge.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi824.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz167%2FSlotRacer%2FIMAG0252.jpg&hash=e67b6093340dcc61404c43260f0d64628550ba84)
Stuck the gauges in the center vent holes WHAT A BITCH with that wideband since it has all the sensor and software cables exiting it as well had to mod the vent tube quite a bit to get everything to fit "right" and the ricer illuminated boost gauge.

Ok so upon getting everything on the car that bolts to or controls the engine 100% final and verifying no leaks etc. It came to my attention that the car had REALLY shitty compression numbers. Without taking the motor out(would have been easier just to. I managed to drop the subframe and raise the motor to get the pan off. pop out the slugs and I am greated to 3 pistons all with this more or less.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi824.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz167%2FSlotRacer%2FIMAG0259.jpg&hash=e5f848f91f2798c36c9a381e5b4479de83a6d4bd)
In typical ricer form I got such a great deal on the car because umm yeah it was blown. The block looked dandy with no big scuffs or any other nonsense.
So I went to my local jy yesterday and for 50$ pulled out these
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi824.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fzz167%2FSlotRacer%2FIMAG0260.jpg&hash=b9aec18bdb71d73afe1b5a34d07822a775b48c79)
They were all dirty nasty sandy and muddy by the time thy got to this photo but once cleaned up they look to be in nice shape. these are out of some pos 8v sohc 323 and the rods appear to be just as beefy as the stock miatas and the pistons have a bit more dish to them. they dont have the right valve reliefs but according to a few sources the dohc head will fit no prob. plus i am a firm believer that if I would have gone with all new shit the motor would have blown up within a month but because I am using all used shit and tossing it together with all the miata bearings, not checking a single clearance and not even taking the rings off the motor will run hard and forever. Tossed them in last night and going to get it all buttoned up this weekend while the snow continues to fall. ::)

Those are the weak sauce rods. Should have got a set of b6t's from me.

.......and why didn't you just put a BP in it?
Ok reason for no BP swap
1:Turbo manifold wont fit
2:Intake manifold wont fit
3:Car has a new clutch already
4:There is nothing wrong with the motor aside from the pistons
5:I would have to find a miata Bp to have all the right parts
6:Idk if its a known fact that the 1.8L will make more power.

And yeah the rods might look weak sauce but the turbo is also weak sauce

I bet a 400hp miata will be quicker than a 1000hp miata on street tires. I am also limited to about 250lb/fts otherwise the rearend is going to say hello and good bye at the same time.

Actually I think he's cranking the boost. We decapped some injectors he brought over and I flow tested them on my bench. They were only about 390cc, but a big step from his 265cc's.
