Title: Project Decision
Post by: Jmunk on March 02, 2012, 07:42:45 PM
I was on the old site back in the day, some of you may or may not remember me. If not oh well.

I have reached a point where I am looking for a new project car and having a hard time deciding. Back when I was in high school and college I have probably 15 Honda and Acura's. I would buy, fix, clean up, and resell. That was how I got myself through college. Anyways here I am 28yrs old, and have a good job, home and few good vehicles. I am going to be selling a boat I have and turning it into a project car. In the past few years I have had a few foxbody Mustang's and enjoyed playing with them, but I didn't have a problem selling them after I put a certain amount of money into them (upgraded fuel injection parts are too pricey for those),

I have thought about building a rat rod, but my knowledge is limited on chasis building. Thought about getting a 67-72 style truck and doing a budget rebuild. I have also thought about doing another Integra or Civic. I want something that I can have as a project and keep. I think I am getting to the stage in my life where I have a want for the style cars that I had when I was in high school. You hear stories of guy that are 40 yrs old and have a mid life crisis and have a want for a car that they had back in high school. Of course the Honda/Acura would have a turbo kit. I want to build something nice, but don't want to sink my entire disposable income into it.

Thoughts on a good project vehicle?

Yeah I'm approaching 40 and want to play with an Fiat 500 Arbath, newest ones.

So I really do not want an old car like I had High School.

Well maybe a mint 70's Celica or Corolla or Civic or N600.

Another Fox body, but with an LSx

LSX in the foxbody would be interesting. I think I am at the point where the next car I get I want to play with and hang on to.

I can't believe nobody has said it yet. I remember you from the old site, so I know you know the rules. Oh and for the record, I would do a CRX.

My next major project (not a sled dirtbike, or my dd cummins) will be a 64-66 ford/mercury pickup with a turbo LSx in it. Proably pretty simple other than that, dropped a bit, 4 link, rack and pinion, buckets. Only hard decision so far is shortbox or long box cause no one builds long box custom pickups. I bet if I threw my sled and deck on and hit the street it would get some looks haha.

It isn't my high school car but a buddy had one in high school with a stock windsor in it and we had some fun times with that thing.

70-72 Buick Skylark, old 455 block with modern upgrades, 700R4 tranny. 3.73's outback.

Pull 11's on "cheater" slicks but cruise at 25 mpg in OD

Two tons of fun!

PT Cruiser = shitty redressed Neon

500 Arbath = tight and compact HB, I'm not fluffy and tall so I would fit in it well.

I can not see any other new car of the size and tech meeting my interest.

Beside check out the MultiAir system, very neat cylinder head design.

The sonic doesn't really impress me, possibly because I remember the Chevy Aveo.  I've driven the fiat 500 sport, and aside from being slow, it was a blast to drive.  The abarth would fix the slow problem with a turbo and additional 60hp.  Its also Italian, not french.

They both seem overwhelmingly gay compared to either:

or

FIAT: Fix It Again, Tony

The 500's been on sale in europe for like 5 years.  The Fiat Panda, the car the 500 is based on, has excellent reliability, and the 500 has had pretty good reliability ratings in europe as well.  The only possibility for things to go wrong is the new factory might screw things up.

The Aveo was one of the worst cars on the market.

Back on topic, Fiero with a $350 junkyard 3800SC with headers and pulleys.  Then enjoy your trailer park ferrari

So they are similar but different, i agree the early aveos are pos's but these sonics are nice tight and quiet, shifter location is pretty sweet about the same as 8th gen. They rip pretty good too.

AW chassis's would look bad ass, just clean up the wiring clutter. They have better suspension than the P-body.

SW chassis's look baller when done right, and bigger engine bay.  :noel:

I never thought I would say this but I am considering getting a sonic. I have only bought one new car in my lifetime and it was the last OBD1 VW

I like the new sonic and I think I may get one.

VX + turbo = 170 crank HP and 40+ mpg. For less than you'll spend on just interest.
Title: Re: Project Decision
Post by: DasPoop on March 06, 2012, 01:24:39 AM
But i dont want 170hp, If I get a sonic its getting a 13g or something in the 250hp range at a 2.2p/r

I want to lay rubber in 3rd with the lsd and still sip gas like a geo

And back on topic a bit I think one of the most badass fiero swaps that are all around is to pick up a 3400DOHC Do all the maintenance to it prior to putting it in and run a standalone gm detuned them 100hp :?: because they were worried about auto trans longevity but it will be hooked to a stick right so with 300hp and it bolts right in.

Then if that isnt enough Gm was kind enough to put a forged crank, rods, pistons and metal headgaskets so boost the fuck out it and see where she breaks then go to the jy and for 200$ get another  O0 :noel:

With me being the cheap bastard that I am and the price of gas this is a solid suggestion. Diesel is $3.99/gal here now, luckily I have a work vehicle and my truck can sit for a week at a time before I hop it in.

vx rods are beefier than reg d15 rods they look like d16 rods so one could presume 200wheel would be achieved and still 40mpg

With my stock a6 with a rhb5 in my crx I was able to trap 104mph in the 1/4 with some shit ass 60' and get 43mpg.

I would like to when I missed the memo that Civc's are collector cars. I started to hunt for a clean non-molested one for a fair price, it doesn't exist. Everyone wants top dollar for these turds when a few years ago $2000 around here got you a solid whip.
