never heard of anyone using alum... not sure how that would work

i have Ti on my 450R motor that turns 13500...

moly would probably be the best for you, because I'm sure it would be cheaper than Ti, but as i understand it, the less weight you have the less the spring has to work to control it. since you will be running a reasonable RPM none of the factors are as important to you. i believe OEM are some sort of steel, not positive if Moly though.

I know the KMSU service manager and he says he only uses Crower steel retainers. Ti doesn't last, aluminum is for a low-hour race motor. I can see Ti being used on a bike, they won't see the mileage or spring pressures a car engine will.

Mower guys use aluminum retainers... but they typically replace them every season or two.  It's not too bad when it's $40 a set but I wish folks would make steel parts.  The rods are aluminum, the retainers are aluminum... no me gusta.

For a DD I wouldn't get anything other than steel.  The other metals will let the keepers pull out the bottom eventually.

right. talked with a buddy about this some tonight. we came up with the same thing.

so i really think i want to use OEM. but im sure this kid is gonna say that the OEMs broke, so he wants to use something aftermarket/stronger/whatever.

so im thinking chromoly? isnt that just a cleaner/stronger steel?

fuck. im gonna look around, but i think i threw away all my OEM;s...

Chromoly has chromium and molybdenum alloyed in for strength. Both are present in most steel but in a larger amount in chromoly. That's it in a nutshell.

Again, OEM will work if you don't have crazy RPM's or spring pressure. The ones that cracked could have had 200k+ on them.

every valve was bent, headgasket blown, they said it had 120psi of compression across. the bores where pretty much smooth with no crosshatching. the drivers side engine mount bracket had no useable threads....

was a pretty minty fresh JDM B18C ::)
