Title: talk to me about boost controllers
Post by: highroller54 on March 20, 2012, 01:23:35 PM
I need a controller, who runs manual, who runs a ebc. I have a xs power manual, dont know if they work or not but I need to get something quick. Seems like a ebc would be nice but maybe they are junk?

I run EBC through the ECU (Hondata). 10 dollars in PWM components, and a 30 dollar solenoid.

MBC= Hallman PRO RX. Solid

EBC= AVCR (If not PWM controlled MAC or the like)  LOVED my AVCR

Mines on crome though, I'm assuming you need to change the tune via a laptop to change boost?

My home made one max out at 24psi, had it all the way down and it would not make more. Had a Hallman in and hit 27psi with it half way.

The Hallmans come with 2 springs, one is about a pound per tern, 1 is like 3 pounds per turn, but theyre dead nuts solid and consistent

Lowes Air compressor regulator. Has worked bitchen for me. Just make sure you hook it up the right way and not backwards. Keep it closed all the way and then half a turn at a time and your solid!!  Not once have I ever had a boost spike with it in the right way. In fact I got jdmhatchracer turned on to one too, and it works awesome for him too. Just t into the wg signal line and feed some pressure to the top of your wg. And for like $18 it comes with a gauge that I pulled off of it and put it on my fuel filter. 2 birds 1 stone. I agree that halman are the shit and avcr is dope too, but for the price you cant beat it. Just pick up one of the regulators and then later on down the road get the baller shit.

Any smallish compressor regulator should work. It works by feeding the top WG port boost like a EBC/solenoid setup does. I can't recall who, but some company had this setup for sale in the late-90's early-00's. Just make sure there's a tiny hole to vent that boost once you let off. Basicly don't use thread tape to seal the fittings.

I run mine off of an AEM tru boost. But I imagine I will be changing that this year. Not sure what I want to run in replacement of it.

The one I have now is a piece of shit hardly any adjustment and the + and - are backwards.

It goes from nothing. One click +3 or 4 then one click completely blocked no boost control

If you guys want I will lathe up some sweet MBCs. What do you guys think a fair price would be? If its worth the time I will make up a batch.

I'll be looking for one of these soon, what ya got in mind for design.

I want one that has repeatable fine adjustment +/- 0.5 psi.  :noel:

I got a smc mini regulator (supposed to be a good quality japan made unit) but when its backed right off the port is 100% plugged in both directions so I can see why you need a bleed hole, I cant see how the wastegate would work if you didnt have the regulator cranked open some.

i made my own that is like this one, works awesome. it is very consistent, but a little touchy to adjust. i think 1/4 turn was like 1lb or something to that effect...

built not bought here also...

I've got a couple dozen of 1/4" bearings for this project. I was intending to make a few of my own, mostly to helps nogs out with a design you can twist by hand. As always I got sidetracked.

IIRC mine used a typical tee, but also a compression fitting threaded for a screw. The compression cap held a rubber o-ring to keep the hand screw from vibrating loose.

I like the idea of building my own boost controller, I don't like the idea of some ball bearing and a spring that looks like it came out of a mechanical pencil to run my boost pressures up into the hi 20's for psi. I imagine at some point it wound matter how much you twisted that bolt. It would just blow that fucker open, it it would be locked closed. Not saying that it wouldn't work, just saying Joe used home made boost controllers of several different varietys. And for 10lbs, whatever it works fine. But I've had problems once your fucking around with the 16+lbs area. And with as much time I spent fucking around with trying to make them work, the best thing I did was just buy the air compressor regulator and just set it and forget it.

I have this one, it was the 20 shipped ebay special. Worked great for about a year, then went to shit. Took it apart and it was all coroded inside and rusted. I sanded it all clean and it works again, but now it's fucking up again. When it fucks up, it won't boost over wastegate, so this fixing to get fixed.

mine was sticking and would either go to waste gate, or boost cut.. so I pulled it apart and sprayed some fluid film on it and havnt had issues since
