Title: aem communication cable

is it necessary to buy this cable from AEM or can i go to a computer store and find the correct serial connector and it work like it should?

If this is the DB9 serial cable to USB adapter all you need is any USB-serial cable with a FTDI chipset.

Ive used my KeySpan serial/usb adapter on AEM's and DSMlinks.  Always connects and no issues for me.
You can score them on Ebay for about $20-$25.

I haven't tried the new RS cable they recently started carrying.  Caveat Emptor.
