Title: Stealth turbo?
Post by: NoPistons! on June 18, 2012, 04:37:27 PM
I love the sound of spool.  Who doesn't?   Dead give away you're boosted too.

Oems dont have that issue that much because it's built into the design of the car.   buddy left yesterday in a genesis turbo and i thought it sounded more like a v6. Stock exhaust.  STock everything.   Run bigger turbo at good boost response but stealth like that.  What comes a point where it's doing more harm than good?

so what's your question?  if you're wondering how make a rhmt style setup sound OEM the. just run a stock airbox with all the resonating chambers. that will quiet down the turbo

will recirculating the dump into the exhaust make a difference?

Then maybe all the factory air box shit like 2slow says on the turbo intake....

But whats that going to do to the efficiency of the turbo? Wouldn't all that crap impede the air flow?

My accord is fairly stealthy, i have 2 Magnaflow mufflers, so its not very loud at all, compared to cavaliers around my town with rice can... and other than the intercooler, which if i painted black, no one would know, and being lowered on 17s, no one would think twice about it.

The turbo only whistles and external waste gate only scream when I'm raping, which at that point, I'm prolly ahead of what I'm running against, and i don't care if stealth factor is gone, because they know that a stock accord wouldn't stomp their dick in the dirt like that...

I guess i don't see the point of it? If you don't beat on it, no one will know. Holsets also have those silencer rings too that quiet turbo whistle too...

to answer the question:  OEM turbo cars have super restrictive intakes and exhausts to keep them quite.... you want a quite turbo car, buy an OEM turbo car and leave it alone.... your really not gonna make a fast OEM quite bucket...

PS both my cars are loud as shit. CRX ok'ish at idle, no real turbo noises other than BOV, but ricer looking exhaust doesnt sound like a Honda POS. GVR4 is loud all the time and a "talkative" turbo pretty much anything tip in, until the exhaust overpowers it LOL.
Galant = OEM turbo car...but not much OEM left, and none of the above 'OEM quite' parts.

The air baffles and seemingly unnecessary sections of intake piping really control this more than anything else.

Go to a junkyard and check out a Volvo that has a td03 turbo.  You'll see what I mean.

You can hear that internal bypass very easily on my civic, not much at all on the volvo itself.

Same idea behind that useless airbox on the back of a GM 5.7 VORTEC intake; just to control noise.

wastegate plumbed into exhaust, not dummped, 3 glasspacks, one baffled and chambered muffler, intake air filter wrapped in foam, intercooler hidden behind a/c condenser 100% not visible. Stock wheels, hawk pads, RE11 tires. Exhaust is about as quiet as stock at idle up to normal driving no boost. I have a BOV that's not recirculated though. Wrapping it in foam cuts the noise 80-90%, but it also surges, so it's currently not wrapped. I need to recirc it, I will one day. I guarantee you I'm in the top 3 quietest turbo miatas making anywhere near the power I am (27PSI, about 350whp). But at 27 PSI, the intake/turbo noise screams pretty loud. Basically nobody knows it's fast till I'm way the fuck infront of them.

GT3271, twin scroll, .87 hotside. No dyno slips, I wanted to dyno it when i upped the injectors and boost, but it was cutting out on top end and I never fixed it. Tempted to "fix it" with a MS3X and different ignition system.  :noel: It pulled pretty similar to your BP build you posted a while back. I think mine had a bit more top end just because of the headwork I have and it goes to 7900, but it's pretty much the same power you were making I'd say. Whenever I mess with it again, I will for sure dyno it once the miss is fixed though, I too want to see a dyno graph.

My setup it's full boost by 4500 under normal driving and then punch it. If you load it up hard it will spool full boost by 4K. I don't have a diverter valve, which is supposed to be an easy 500-800 RPM reduction in spool.

If you want quiet, grab an electric motor or build a sailboat. OEM's have to deal with the sound police in europe for intake & exhaust, and same for the usa with just exhaust.

If you want a quiet exhaust then get a Flowmaster HushPower muffler. It helped my car out ALOT compared to the straight 3 inch from the turbo back. It was still louder than stock but had a different sexy tune. Almost like a V6 gm product with stock exhaust but a bit louder.

Fuck stealth.  Holset with silencer removed and open dp, i dunno why you would wanna cover up that sweet sound  :noel:

Try that in Cali....

I really don't think I lost much. Good spool line power curve all the way to 7200 rpm and I think the drop off there was from my small exhaust housing.

Because someone who used to work where i did had a black first gen 300zx factory t3 car with some exhaust/intake mods.   It was loud as fuck and sounded like rape just off idle.

The longer i can get away with "wannbe drifter stock ka beater car faggot" the better.

I do want to run a cutout because i am addicted to said sound i'm trying to conceal and faster spool up for whatever reason is nice too.  Options dood.
