So i turned up the boost to 8psi on my stock b16a
11.5-12.5 AFR under boost
Timing looks like this

Took a hard pull on the highway 1-2-3-4 Then stopped by the lights....
Car idle really low
And Miss fires, Sounds like a subaru.
LOTS of smoke out the valve cover breather.
Oil on #3 Spark Plug
Did i Crack my ringlands?
How did it happen?
-
sire you cracked your ringlads and or melted a pistons from that high way pull you need to run a safer tune 12.5 is too lean fro constant boost like high way pulls its too hot in there over time under load
-
oh
and also car temp went up to about 100*
-
what could cause ringlands to break?
timing?
-
usually from detonation due to heat. Extraneous shit on pistons starts to glow and light the fuel up. Possibly shitty gas as well. My B16 gave up at 14psi .
-
if you're in wa, you can pick up my block with 3 good pistons still in it for free.

wow man thats cool shit
thanks....
but i live outside the usa!

Where at in WA ?
Can I pick it up @ 5-30 at the Dyno Day BBQ? ;D
-
Whats a good AFR for boosting on the hiway?
-
Im in Kent
If my del sol lives to make it on the dyno I'll bring it with me in the trunk.
I will come to watch if it doesn't anyways, so I can still bring it down there.
Just to let you know, oil pan is garbage and has been cut in order to fix my current oil pan in my car, block has no numbers on the front because the moron who had it before me though it would be cool to cover/grind off that shit and write B18C5 on it.
Just send me a PM if you want it, good crank, 3 pistons, 4 rods, and block has never spun bearing. Should be good enough for a cheap build.

I would settle for 11.5 - 12:1
Possibly low 11s due to high comp stock pistons.

thanks I'll Pm you before I leave wyo.

ok, cool
Remind me a day or two before the meet, so that I remember for sure.

what could cause ringlands to break?
timing?
Not taking the factory PVC set up off, can cause the ringlands to break if boost gets in there...

thanks everyone who helped,....
topdawg. i removed the factory pcv, i run a catch can / valve cover with one block drain back

aw man that sucks!
your AFR are a little on the lean side. I go for high 11's at WOT
what octane do you run?
you might want to get your injectors flow tested before you run it again for a safety measure.

I think something else is going on here. Your timing is conservative as hell probably to retarded and 12.4 afr is fine for 8 measley psi.
Seriously my timing for the car would probably be at about 23-24 degrees on the high cam and about 21 on the low and at 8 psi 12.5 is about perfect. USAULLY.
Look everything over carefully because youve got something else going on imo.

thats what im thinking
what do you think?
my car had a very slight miss fire at idle
maybe the ringlands were broke, and the 8psi finished it off?
-
compression test it.
-
i just pulled the motor
tomorrow i will open it up and see what happens

Missfiring at Idle can meen 65million differant things idle issues can point to anything from lean to fouled plugs to worn out bottom end bearings yeah shit gets complicated I'd almost say this is just a guess but it could have been an oil leak in that cylinder causing detonation.
Ive seen on motors that are just clapped out that you have to retard timing really far and make them rich as hell. So you know its really hard to say for sure but take a hard look at everything and try to figure out why it happened and make sure it doesn't do it again thats all you can do.
If it's cracked ring lands thats no big deal swap in a new piston and try again.

Weak motor. Some can take a absolute beating, some have already taken a beating with morons running them with stock P28's and no O2 sensor. You seriously would not believe how many Hondas on Craigslist are sold like this: "LS/VTEC with a stock p06 and vtec switch, but it pulls hard!"
-
it was proberly that
thanks bro
-
Pulled head last night....
head seems fine....
seen some light scratches in#2 and #3 so i assume its broken ringlands.
just need to figure out why they broke!
-
Maybe just old age? Weak gas? Heat?
-
I did this to an old B18a last year. It was my fault though because I was beating the hell out it. It got hot and I melted some things. After getting the motor rebuilt, a nice chunk of the piston and ring was gone.
-
detonation breaks ring lands in my case this is the bin file i ran timing in the tables was super conservative but some stupid "advanced feature" i was messing with destroyed my motor in one night just a few ripperss came back steaming oil vapor out the valve cover
my bin file is attached
-
the timing in vtec does look pretty low. What advanced features were you messing with??? Screenshot if you can of it please so I don't fuck up my motor by fucking around with crome too much.
