Title: Lacking motivation
Post by: ironcrx on November 21, 2012, 12:26:17 PM
What do you nogs do when it comes to suffering a lack of enthusiasm?

My shit:
It's been well over a year since I've worked on my s12.  Yes I still have it.  I got the new motor (vg33e) for it just sitting around ready to be swapped in but I can't for the life of me actually put a wrench to the thing.

I moved to my new house in August that my bro and I bought last year which took 11 months to close.  We were staying at mom's in the mean time.  My s12 and all the tools needed for the swap are still at mothers because I don't have a garage/shed to put everything yet until I can get to affording something.  Each time I plan a day or two to take care of the car, I get distracted or just don't care enough.  I work full time and go to school full time so my free days are few.

I dunno.  I wanna get that beauty back on the road but I can't get motivated.  :-\

Look @ Nopistons build thread on S? and all the crazy fabrication he is doing.

If that doesn't get ya motivated then maybe get your head examined.  :noel:

Yea, you gotta find something like that to get you going. I get like that at times. I don't purposely find a way to get excited again, it just happens. Usually a similar build will do it.

I'm in the same boat with my paint booth. I had a big metal shed(portable style) that came with my house. My house came with so much shop space I never could figure out what to do with this building. I put a huge fan in it with proper ducting and filters. The only thing left to start painting is clean the random junk out and put up lights. I have tons of wire and the lights already. I just can't make myself go out there and finish it. I have crx parts that need paint ready to go too.

You have to look at how shit goes sometimes: ball today, gone tomorrow.  You gotta work on the car so you can ultimately enjoy it or else shit happens (tree falls on it, it goes from sweet S12 to rotted hull, etc)

I'm in the same boat with parts and tools scattered throughout other peoples shops. I've gone with my car sitting over a year before because of it.  Once I had someone ask for a chipped ecu and give me a ride it was back on.  Just have to get the modivation to get everything gathered up and organized and it gets easier to keep moving.

+1 maybe throw in an 8-ball for the winner of the most accomplished super cheap build.

Would like to to some kind of RHMT builds with liberal use of hardware store supplies at future meets.

Have a contest of the most RHMT build wins a hammer trophy made from a turbo center section (w/o wheels and shaft), duct tape, jb weld and camshaft with flattened lobes.  :noel:

Just figure a way to start using your full skill set and dive in. I had my entire garage floor filled and had no space to work. I said "fuck it" just threw all my free time at it. I started selling stuff & moving what I could into my basement, and a week ago got enough room to move my 2 motors & tranny around. The stuff I sold paid for all the motor parts too.

I got motivation by getting something I can toss all my skills at - H2B on the cheap. It involves machining shit, fabbing little stuff, off the wall ideas and basic a+b=? stuff. I usually hate projects because I just have to toss money at them. For me this is a lot of fun now.

I found a just-imported JDM H23A for $655 shipped that only needed **A $5 BOLT**, got a F22 to do the bulk of no-adapter H2B testing on, and can finally put the rusty del sol vtec to work as a motor swap test bed. I also have enough parts to get a third motor going (86mm 11.2:1cr h22/f22, or 11.9:1 f22a6 if JD wants to rebuild the head & put in a 272 cam) for my project Civic. I have less money into 3 H2B/F2B swaps so far than my brother has into his 155whp B16. So far it's been about a month and I am going to be pulling the b16 out this weekend, and hopefully getting the F22 in to finalize some angles & dimensions for my brackets/mounts.

In other words, DO WORK!

lol, if there's ever a mid-west meet I can make, I can promise you my h2b swap can qualify. I'm using 3/8" sch40 steel pipe for spacers (machined), angle iron for brackets, and several big grade 8 SAE bolts - 5/8"x1", 1/2"x3", 1/2"x4.5", 1/2"x6". Technically they come from the hardware store, but all the nuts & bolts were "donated". ;)

My f23 crx is very similar. I'm using the h22 tranny, but I'm making all of the mounts and brackets using hardware store steel.

Why can't you make a NC meet?  MW is kind of too big to just have a meet somewhere.

My crx was apart for almost 4 years, in less then a month and a half working on it on the weekends I made it to NC meet.

In those 4 years I built 15 motors for friends, help build their cars, and turbo my 4dr. Sometimes it takes time to get excited enough to get shit done. Slowly build up some steam to work on the s12 and get that shit done for the 2013 rhmt NC meet!

My crx has been apart for 6 yrs and i had all but given up. But i have entered the fuck it stage and will be getting it done over the winter as a $10k paper weight does me no good. It's weird how motivation just comes out of no where, At least thats how it works for me.

I have friends that can't even begin to understand whats needed to finish a FULL rebuild ground up. They have no idea how hard it can be when the biggest project they have done is install an exhaust.   :?:

what I find helpful is to ask for help.  Get a friend to help you out on it, so that way you torment him/her also.  Makes me feel better that I am not the only one suffering.  haha.  I have an H22 integra in the garage for the past 3 months.  All done basically, just needs registration and small wiring (not necessary, just personal preference), and an intake.  I haven't touched it really in those three months and I would rather sit in my room on HMT bored out of my mind.  I hate working on cars.

this reminds me, i was suppose to roll my fenders weeks ago, but it was raining....its not now...still didnt. maybe tomorrow  ::)

lol. i did find some motivation to get my intercooler and pipes on my galant. only had all the parts minus 40bukcs of small shit for the last 9+months sitting here for it.

i use to have a friend that would call/show up like once a week and annoy the shit out of me asking if my car was done. he would never touch the car lol, but would show up to make sure i would work on it. sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt.

Get a whiteboard and write everything down. Put it in your garage, and start with 1 thing at a time. B4 you know it your motivated. It also helps to have a clean work area to start with.

That is an excellent idea.  When I make lists, I find that I accomplish a lot more stuff.

I'll be moving to that soon.

I've been making post-it "to do" lists of each part of my projects so I can plow right through them. I usually make the lists when I'm at work or taking a crap, so I don't even waste time making them. Missing steps and re-doing shit has killed me in the past, and I have ADD so it's happened a lot.

So I lost the keys to my DD (2012 mazda 6) and it will cost $300 to get a new key.  So I'm heading to mothers to fire up the nissan and drive it around some till I can get new keys.  Maybe rolling around in it will get me motivated to do the swap on it.
Title: Re: Lacking motivation

that should work

slightly shifting the topic. what do you nogs do when you have lots of projects, but little money and time?

my list of things to do is
F23 crx(need to make mounts, bodywork/paint. needs about $300 in various parts but i have everything to make it run)
finish paint booth(no money needed here, just motivation/time)
SBC RWD EF hatch(lots of money and time needed here. i only have a rod knocking 305 and ef shell on hand)
cb750 cafe racer(i have a sorta running stock bike, just need $400-500 to really get the ball rolling)
90 silverado(the end goal is a 6bt with auto swap. for now it has a 4 bolt 350 and 5 speed. i have a 700r4 i need to put in so the 5 speed can go towards the rwd ef. but i need $200-ish in parts to complete the swap)
grm ef hatch(doesnt need much except some general cleaning/painting and work on the tune some. thats hard to do when i dont have access to a dyno and i cant drive it on the street)

i work 8-5 mon-fri and do some sort of side work about once a week, sometimes its a tune, sometimes repair work, sometimes airplane work. i feel likei have no time to put towards any of this stuff and even less money. money i get, just need to find a way to make more or spend less on other things, but how do you budget your time for it all?

lol. same thing. made a list. really i just added to my big build list. threw the couple things i need/want to do to the crx/gvr4 on there. so that way i can see all at once... but those just need small items.

I had a priority list then kinda left it untouched for a while.  Did get a few things done on it but I need to get my damn work/storage area at my house figured out.

New battery in nissan got it driving around.  Rough though.  It sputters and misfires when in low rpm under load  :-[ Definitely remember a lot of things I gotta do with the car now.

Just try to keep/make it fun dude.  Go do some donuts or something.  Then imagine how much more fun that would be with a vg33 instead.

The less you care about trivial bullshit the easier motivation comes.  You dont need a storage shed.   Crank nog to 11 and do work.

Your right nig.  Lately the motivation has been building and my rhmt nog thought process has started to return.  Figured out the storage issue.  My mom's delivery business has these delivery vans.  One of them, a dodge whos tranny Iv'e busted several times, is gonna be scrapped before the end of the next tourist season so I'm taking it off her hands and will park it in my back yard.  Its going to act as a temp storage area for my large tool boxes, jacks, hoist, motor, etc.  I need a place to put the big items which I can't have inside and I don't want to leave outside to rot.  I care about my tools.

So it looks like vg action could start up in January.  Would be sooner but I'm heading to the motherland next week till the 2nd.

Also figured out the misfire issue: Steel braided hose was touching the ignition coil.  zip tie fixed it.  Hauls like a champ with its 24 y/o motor O0
