Title: If you were going to buy a newish diesel truck
Post by: PhilStubbs on February 18, 2013, 10:32:01 PM
So, I should have a ton of debt paid off withing the next 6-12 months. I am considering buying a diesel truck. I'm leaning towards fords. I hate ford interior, but they seem to be the most solid from what I can tell without actual research. I'm not gonna do much, turbo back exhaust, intake, egr delete and programmer. Simple shit, don't want to roll coal like a faggot, no tug of war, drag racing etc.

Anyway, what would you buy that is not brand new, but new enough to finance with a bank, 4-5 years or so

the oil change on the f350 was 200 bucks. looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

no, seriously though.  the interior is nice, I wasn't disapointed. LOL@working on it though.

6.4 Ford would be tough to beat, and I am a cummins guy. (Note I did not say Dodge guy).

If I was in the market for something newer it would either be a 6.4 Ford, or a Denali Chevy diesel. Unless you are getting a 2010+ the Dodge isn't even in the running as far as I'm concerned.

I still love the 6.0l. I have good luck with them and know them like the back of my hand.

Kinda sounds like my gut is on the right track. 10-15 years ago I would be buying a dodge with a cummins and not even asking anyone. These days the ford seems to be the way to go. Any input on the duramax? My uncle has one that's 5-6 years old and seems happy, plus uses it fairly similar to how I would. He also has probably never opened the hood himself so I can't get a valid opinion from him. If I could put the Chevy interior into a ford I'd be a lot happier. Lol

Do you have a lift to take the cab off to do major repairs?
Title: Re: If you were going to buy a newish diesel truck
Post by: highroller54 on February 19, 2013, 10:55:28 AM
I can have a cab off in 1.5 hours very easy but that requires a two post hoist, head gaskets can be done cab on so depends on what you consider major repairs.

How long does it take you to do them cab on vs cab off on a 6.0 ?

I have an 05 chev 2500 ec/sb 4x4, it has 412000km (256000miles) The drivers seat needs to be restuffed and recovered, outside of that I really don't have any complaints, oh other then it is not a long box.

It's about the same but more fucking around in tight spots with it on. I've never personally done cab on though.

Interesting. I'm thinking 4 door longbed. If I can swing the payment. If not I will settle for the half doors in the back, but long bed is a must. I'm not buying a diesel that can't fit a sheet of plywood with a closed tailgate. My current truck has an 8' bed and I put it to use.

cc/lb is what I was shopping for as well, but this was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up. But this one does have leather, dual climate control ect... It was the full load in 05. Not ideal, but for what I use it for it does fine. It had good maintenance records, and doesn't leak or drip anything, has a 5 position efi live switch, intake, exhaust, fass lift pump, 6 speed trans module, ect...

The only thing I want to do is to go through the trans, as it has never been out, it doesn't give me any trouble, and still shifts great, but I would hate to be left stranded.

I hate fords, but their trucks are work horses. I own a 350, 550 and 650. Horrible interiors, crappy mileage, but they haul.

I am a big fan of my 07.5 6.7L, its like my old 5.9L's big brother.
I will agree though, the body of the truck and the interior (aside from the massive room of the mega cab) leave much to be desired. If this engine wasn't in the truck, I would never own a dodge product.

I love my superdutys interiors but both have my trucks have been full loads, leather ect. The bare bones trucks are just that.

I can't figure out why leather is considered such an upgrade. I hate leather. Cloth owns all for seats.
Title: Re: If you were going to buy a newish diesel truck
Post by: rawr on February 20, 2013, 01:41:07 PM
Its more expensive and traditionally if its not shit teir leather it last longer and it eaeier to clean. Plus shit died for.it. you live in florida, leather sucks. It sucks here in the summer and the winter but fall and spring its great.

Also theres got to be atleast 3/4 cows worth of leather in a crew cab. Thats got to count. for something.

You should get either a Ford or a Chevy, so I can sweet talk you into a bad flash that will poke rods out of your block, or better yet cause a runaway diesel situation at interstate+ speeds, when you are halfway home.

For that sort of flash on a Dodge, you're going to have to wait a bit.  I can render your ECU into a doorstop now, but I would not find that as satisfying.
Title: Re: If you were going to buy a newish diesel truck
Post by: PhilStubbs on February 21, 2013, 09:06:50 AM
Yea, I'm sure even I could turn it into a door stop.

I'm really a Chevy guy if I was forced to pick an American brand and stick with it. I guess I need to do some research.

The chevys ride like a chevy. If you go into it knowing that you'll be fine. Now with that said, my father in law has a 01 ford with a 7.3 and has 200k on the clock and he just did new heads because something was fucked up with the injectors and coolent getting mixed together, besides that the thing hasn't had a problem since day 1 off the lot. He has some small mods done to it but nothing that's to big of a deal.

I love me some dead cow seats. My Chev automatically turns the seat heat on in the winter, so they are never cold. Summer they do get warm. Lots of newer vehicles have a/c in the seats though too, that is amazing.

I really like my old silverado. It's comfortable, rides nicer than any truck I have been in and tows about as well as any gas truck could. I just kinda want something nice. My truck is a 1990, interior is mint, body is straight, just needs paint....... and a 6bt. Lol.

My business partner has a 2010 dodge, and he drives his old 02 more then the 2010. He is too worried about the new one breaking, and costing a pile of money to fix. Where as he knows he can fix just about anything on the old one for a couple grand at most, including the engine its self.

This damn thread got me thinking about trading in my 650 on a new 550. So I went and drove one. Damn thats a nice truck. Even the interior wasn't bad. Those 6.4s don't even sound or drive like a diesel. The smog fluid you have to add sounds incredible lame though I hope someone has a brilliant delete for that.

I'm not 100% up on the 550 but you said new, then 6.4 then smog fluid. Me thinks you were in a 6.7 scorpion truck.

05+ switched motors, and didn't have the injector issues that the lb7 had. That being said, I love my 01 lb7 now that I've replaced the injectors to the tune of $2200 lol

I've got an '03 F350 with the 7.3l that I run on Veggie oil and I love it. Haven't had any major problems. It's got a lift so it rides like a truck but any super duty will as they are designed to pull heavy shit and have weight on the axle. The 7.3 is pretty badass. The new fords are pretty nice even the interiors are sweet. The cost of diesel though is just so ridiculous.

i have a 99 cummins chipped straight piped and a bigger turbo. it has 265000 on it and no troubles but the dodge part sucks. my dad has a 01 duramax it rides nice and is quiet. but with the cost of diesel i would just buy a gas truck it costs me 180 buck to fill up that bitch every 2 weeks fuck that business

My truck gets no daily duty. If I'm not towing or hauling it sits. The gas price makes me feel better. With current gas prices it takes about $130 to fill.

Damn I thought the diesel trucks would do better on gas then my 03 6.0l yukon. I got around 12mpg on the way down to Nc this year, and closer to 19mpg after JD tune it. Im sure I could have got better mpg if I wasnt doing close to 80mph on the way back :noel:

That is what kills it for mine, I pretty much go 80mph+ all the time. I am sure if I slowed down to 60-65mph it would get that 19-21 that everyone talks about. It is hard when the highway I use for 95% of my moving around has a 70mph speed limit.
