I have been eying this thing up on Craigslist for a few days, swap looks clean but not sure what the real value is with a swap. I usually lose interest in things after a year or two. I don't wanna lose my shorts after I get tired and try to sell. I think like anything else gotta find the right person for something like this. Input ?

That thing is clean as Fuck. I would rock it! Show up with 2750 and drive it home.
-
Swap that boat anchor for an lsx and then you're good. Trans will likely take a dump shortly thereafter.
-
i really doubt much air is getting into that engine threw that homo thing he is calling a filter....but then it is a 305...
id say if you like it, lowball it and buy for whatever he takes. i kinda like it. looks clean forsure. kid a work just bought a not as clean looking one with a 1jz swap for 2200-2500? i dont remember. was cheap tho. not a popular car with or without the rotary in it... ::)
looks like it needs a little work. looks like it could be more than a little fun. and someone else already put the blood/sweat into it.

The 305 is heavy and doesn't produce much power. But a conversion would be a lot to take on considering the LSx doesn't just bolt right up. Not sure which specific T5 trans it is, but it probably wouldn't last wither way.
Go look around the norotors.com forum to get a better feel for what you're getting into. I think it's a little bit easier to start with a virgin car with a blown stock engine for cheap then convert to LSx. The one that the guy is selling was built as out-dated.

looks like its worth 3k to me

I'm not 100% on T5 stuff, but assuming the clutch fuckery isn't a killer, what is that hard about fabbing 2 motor mounts (maybe a trans mount too), buying an MSD box and an LSx carb intake manifold and doing other minor misc. fab work?
This is all besides your other point, which is that clean, exploded rotary FC's are not hard to find for cheap, and make a much better candidate. That, I wholeheartedly agree with.

Go look at it, nitpick the shit out of it, offer 2.5, leave paying 2.8
-
Motor mounts aren't hard, trans part should be out there. Not having done this swap before not sure if engine/trans placement will be effected which would in turn require driveshaft work. The T5 is universal enough that another one could be sourced to be made to work.
Not here to argue with you on anything, just that it would probably be easier to start from scratch because of equal work involved in making a gen3 work. If I selected that car I would explore maybe a lighter gen1; at least some aluminum heads and look for power with upgrading the gen1 design.
Not sure about the rear end either.. it's probably stock which is fine for the current power plant but anything more and it might need to be upgraded too.
I'm gonna hold out for one day finding a clean FD with blown motor. Hard to find them at all anymore.

by the time you get the bellhousing, motor and braking system sorted out you're going to be 2 grand into the project with a dirt cheap 5.3 keeping the stock tranny and not half assing shit. The bare minimum i've come up with going over the porsche is about 1400 and that's not including a rebuild of the engine, but still including some off the shelf parts like a bellhousing adaptor or an aftermarket bellhousing.
-
I would keep it carbed.. but put something decent in it. Fuck a 305
-
I'm gonna take a good look at it and lowball him, if he takes it I'll scoop it up. If not then I'll find some other creation that I should play with.
-
it takes an average of 5k worth of parts to do a conversion plus labor and alot of it. the lsx stuff is obviously more expensive, the chasis is worth 2500 to 3k in the socal area. now since im not from Richmond i don't know what's the going rate there. it wouldn't surprise me if the guy would want at least 7-8k min for something like this.
offering 2750 is an insult to the conversion. and I've owned 3 2ng gen rx7 and have looked into the swaps before. so.. yea lots of money and work needed.

Slowmaro T5 != Mustang T5. Buy a good shifter, if it doesn't have one, and it's good.
LSX has the SBC pattern, would be trivial to bolt to trans woth a jack under the pan and figure out the mounts. Not having done the swap before I'd expect having to run a different clutch, and then getting any sweet accessories like AC or PS plumbed.
I would not keep it carbed. Some of you folks are fucking weird.
