Title: my truck needs twin turbos
Post by: highroller54 on May 07, 2009, 03:52:36 PM
On the way to work today I have decided that this winter my power stroke will get compound turbos. Look for build thread. That is all.

Yours? or the one that made 1K hp? I find it hard to believe that a stock hpop made that kinda power. I could be wrong I am not up on my hpops, other then I know they offer a dual kit for a reason.

A GT4202 or an S480, over the stocker would get you there.

yes but 6.0l on a stock computer hate big turbos, only so much can be done to light them, the 6.0 just works fantastic with twins that keep drive pressure down. Dont compare 6.0l"s to duramaxs, they are two different animals

Sounds like your volintering for the twin turbo 6.0 build to, lol.

you take anything designed for 250 rwhp and stuff 5-6-7-1000 rwhp and 1500 ftlbs to it and your going to need trans work.

I said over the stock turbo, not as a single  :P

You need some big RPM's or the extra .6L of the dirtymax to run that big of a charger. That and this post was about twins. You could also use an HX-60, or a bht3b, or a K31, or ect...

Guy my wife bought her mustang from had a fox body racecar with a 351C making 1200HP at the wheels on alot of laughing gas.  He'd blow the mains out about every 5th event he'd go to.  But fuck it was fast, running in the 8.80's as long as he could get it to hook and not wheelstand.

Also, running a stock crank.  Never broke the crank, don't get me wrong, it was destroyed, but all in one piece.

Slightly different then a 6 cylinder with (14) 14mm mains holding it in.  ;)

They use 9/16th main studs I think with a girdle.

Either way, its something to see.

The first thing I would do is through the stock turbo in the dump, I really cant see it working well in a compound turbo set up. Maybe if you ran a external gate to keep the drive pressure down, but thats a big maybe.

Post by: dvst8r on May 08, 2009, 10:54:15 PM
Keeping the stock turbo, would keep it so that it had almost stock time to lite, and quick spool up, I would run an external gate for sure, and then GT4202 or so.

What is the stock inducer on that, 57mm? What kinda power have guys made on the stock charger?
Title: Re: my truck needs twin turbos

just on number two about 450 hp at the wheels, I'm not sure what the max has been or could be but thats the number most people run on a race file. The thing is though the stock charger isn't lag free and I hate the vgt when it sticks. I think a guy could make a better set up starting from scratch.
Title: Re: my truck needs twin turbos
Post by: dvst8r on May 09, 2009, 11:28:03 AM
450 is a lot more out of the stock charger, then us cummins guys get. Which means it flows easily well enough for a 650hp towing setup.

If you are set on replacing the stock charger, I would look at: (in no particular order.) GT35, GT37, BW S360, BW S362, Precision 62mm billet. BW's have become way, way, way over priced, companies like II, and HTT, ect... Have been changing the turbine housings, and then been overcharging till it has become the norm, to pay $1500+ for a $500 turbo and a $200 turbine housing.

60mm class obviously lights a little earlier, and the 62mm class will take you into the 700hp range if you so decide.

if you want compounds, why are you going twin?

i always thought you needed two different sized turbos to make compounding work the best it can

compound turbos arn't twins? as in twin = two? a big turbo and small turbo is two turbos or twin turbos (1+1=2). You should go find your elementary teacher and kick her in the box  :P

this system is what I will copy, its the only one that acually looks like it was ment to be on a 6.0l.

when i think of 'twins', i think of the coors light commercials where its two IDENTICAL twins, but i guess since you can have fraternal twins and paternal twins, what you're saying makes sense.  just a different perception of the word i guess

I found a little info on the truck, like that it is a stock block and heads, but with hypermax rods, and some low CR pistions.

He is obviously running some big sticks in there. Do you know what turbo's he is running? I am sure with the couple stages of nitrous you could get yours well over 650hp too :P

What point do you need to put rods in that motor? Do you know if they just milled the stock pistons to drop the CR?

I was not aware of the rods and pistons, but I dont have much time for research as of late. the artical I read there was no mention of that. I dont know when rods are needed, I do know that the 6.0l guys make fun of the duramax guys for there wimpy rods and that its not a common thing to do.

I just read a quick thread on comp d, and that is what it said, however it had no mention of the turbo's used. I was lead to believe that the owner of the truck was the one that posted those specs about the hypermax rods and low compression pistons. The two stages of nitrous was posted previous to that, by another user but was never disputed.

I know in the dmax much over 550hp and you are living on the edge of the rods. 1200hp+ has been made on a stock 12v cummins bottom end, but guys have also bent them at ~900hp, typically guys start to think about milling out pistons, and billet rods around the 800hp area.
