Title: Towing a civic "toad" - advice and need a baseplate
Post by: Eggylshatch on August 28, 2013, 03:25:13 PM
Yo bitches,
I've been gone a while, and didn't miss you at all.

That said, I've been nursing my turbo civic boner a bit. I bought a 97 4runner (v6, 5 speed), and was going to sell the civic, but I'm moving and kind of ran out of time, and I didn't really want to sell it anyway. I need to tow the thing from California, through Arizona, and to Wyoming, and I found a used tow setup to tow it "four down," but I still need a baseplate/tow brackets for the civic.

Anyone have a  baseplate or tow brackets to fit a 95 civic that they would "rent" or sell me for teh cheapness?

It looks easy enough to make one, but I don't have a welder and pretty limited on tools even where I'm at right now (most of it is in a storage unit in Arizona).

Is the 4runner going to explode and/or careen off a mountain pass towing this turd?

 :mexi:

Tow bar and lights from hf, less then $100

I think I paid $50 with a few coupe ons. I spent another $15 in grade 8 botls, and lock washers.

2 years in a row, 1300-1500 miles no issues. I went from north Nj 25min outside NYC to Ashvile Nc.

No crazy modifications needed to make it bolt to the civic?

Tits! I'll be in Lander, but it's good to know there is another rhmter in Wyoming. I'll find an excuse to swing through some time. I'm emptying my storage unit out in Arizona where I have a b20z, crower 402t's, a partially fuct gsr transmission, and parts of a turbo setup- hoping to put it in the civic when I settle in to Lander!

Do you still have the blower/turbo mutant?

I need to have it for about a week, so its more expensive than just buying the parts I need

They are $54.99 + tax per day. I would go to hf, and rock one of those like said above.

Yes and sounds like we could have a little rhmt meet in Denver area with Daspoop, SOHCKLR87, Theidealone, and others  :noel:

Lander is only a 2hr drive form Casper and there is a brewery in the Lander area I an excuse to go visit.  :noel:

used the same exact one with quality bolts from the hardware store to tow my civic from San Diego to Vegas behind a tahoe.
no mods needed, just take the bumper off, drill 4 holes in the metal bumper and bolt that bitch to it.

I bought a used tow bar the other day that is non-adjustable, but it looks like it will work with some minor rigging to bolt it to the tow hooks. Hopefully it's fine? In the dark last night it seemed like there were two larger bolts connecting each tow hook to the frame rails- can't be too different from drilling some new holes for an HF tow bar, right?

It would be unfortunate to have the car come off at 65 mph...

I would advise towing it from the tow hooks. I had issues with them backing out even when double nut.

Also the tow bar is ment to be a bit lose, next I hope the car has a ok alinement, as you will need to leave the keys in the ignition and steering wheel unlock

Last year how I had it bolted up, good thing I had it changed or I would have lost the car some where in VA.

This year, I removed the bumper support and had to drill one of the bracket wholes a bit bigger and bolted up with grade 8 botls, lock washers, and tripled nutted.

If a minivan can pull a trailer, the 4runner should have no issues, right??

Well, I made it to Wyoming! My tow setup was way sketchier than crxvtec's, but it did the job. The 4runner didn't have any problems either, which was a bit of a relief as it has 247xxx miles on it... The mountain passes put me down into 2nd gear a few times, and 1st on sharp turns on steep hills, but overall it did pretty well, and on the flatter highways I cruised at 65-70.

How the fuck do you post pictures from a phone/iphone? Do you still have to host it somewhere else first?

Thanks doodz! I ended up bolting it to the tow hooks, but I used longer, grade 8 bolts so I could fit 2 nuts with a lock washer between them on each end. The whole thing would shift if I took a sharp turn too fast because it wasn't tightened down on the tow hooks but just free to slide in the slots- kind of unnerving, but I think it needed the play to tow properly. Now to do this engine swap one of these days... I think I should replace the 5-r synchro in the gsr tranny before I install anything, but I'm poor and unemployed at the moment...
