I need to clean a ls trans case for the mini, I won't paint it so whats the best to scrub it clean? I want to say bdvt had a good system figgered out? Soda blasting looks kinda cool/good but I would rather not fuck around THAT much.
-
I spent a long time scrubbing mine with off the shelf cleaners and different kinds of brushes. Never got clean enough for me so I painted it and it looked great. Next time I am going to try a 3m bristle discs.

castoil super clean or purple power?
any of those wire brushed or hose 3m bristles are gonna remove the cast texture and move ya more to a brushed polished look.
our parts washer machine here does a pretty good job. and I just used some shit on my new civic engine bay. found it in detail was bay. they called it E3.
-
Chad you nigger, grab some of your Wife's oven cleaner and a couple scrub brushes and hit the car wash.
-
I must have bought the wrong oven cleaner ???
-
I did that to u have to get aluminum safe shit or it just keeps corroding
-
Purple cleaner will turn the aluminum purple...so be careful.

Beyond that is media blasting
-
I have always used oven cleaner, then you could go back with a stainless wire brush to get rid of the dark color I guess. I always paint silver.
-
^^^ looks good!
I always paint silver.
See I can't handle that.

Kerosene. Over cleaner needs to be rinsed promptly or your aluminum gets ashy like Larry.

Looks Mexicant to me.

Looks like shit. Perfect example of what I don't want.
-
I just dropped one off at the machine shop with a few engines to be hot tanked.
I don't care what they look like but this one was greasy as hell and its being paid for so I gave it a shot.
Will forget to report back this weekend when I pick it up

I send all my aluminum parts out for soda blasting, looks brand new when you get it back and its always under 30 bucks.
-
I wish I had someone around for that
-
Check around. Soda blasting is almost more popular than sand blasting because it doesn't damage stuff, it just cleans it.
-
Paint is expensive, and looks like shit.

n-hexane will take whatever is on your case off and leave it looking brand new.
Depending on your area it may be expensive or illegal.
-
only way to cut salt encrustation is by blasting, as you can see on the Y8 tranny.
-
Blasting makes it look great.
-
I'm going to try and blasst it with fine walnut shells tomorrow. Better look good, closest guy to me that does soda says it doesn't look good, basically like a good presure wash. Shitty machine? For 100.00 plus shipping both ways when he says it won't work, no thanks.
-
At some of the medical places I work at they use dry ice as media so there's no residue left to clean off. Works pretty well, but its also expensive.
