hey guys,
most, if not all of you, don't remember me. I originally joined the "other" site back in 2004. at that time, I had recently purchased a rusty piece of shit 86 crx si from a buddy. I joined the site to gain knowledge about how to turbo a car "properly", and ended up with my first junkyard kit. among the car knowledge, I learned a few other life lessons like.. tiffany teen had a really nice turd cutter (look below), hotrex has herpes, the free bangbros password, and the ever popular term nignog.

I abandoned my project for years since life got in the way, but im slowly starting to get back into the swing of things. I kept track of everything I worked on, although the camera phones sucked ass through the years
enough sentimental shit, heres my pics:
started out with this 86 crx si in 2003. I bought it from a buddy for $500, cleaned it up with a rattlecan job, and added some old school enkies.

in 2004 after a lot of research on different forums, I worked on a d16a1 swap.. a few months later i slapped junkyard turbo kit on that bitch

I installed a .48/.60 turbo from a turbocoupe, dsm 450's with the afc hack, crush bent intercooler piping from an exhaust shop, johnnyracecar intercooler, and some turboxs goodies lol
it ran pretty damn good, until I started fucking up the stock clutch... then about a year later, I spun a rod bearing.
still paying attention?

I pulled the motor, and that's when problems started. I found out that my car was rusting beyond repair, and I was debating giving up. I looked around locally, and found someone selling an 87 crx dx for $500.. I stripped my old one completely, and picked up the new one. my landlord at the time was being a dick, and yelling about the car shell sitting in the driveway..

I added some EDM headlights and corners, JDM digital gauge cluster and purchased a set of slicks from a guy from RPR mounted on vx rims

the project sat until in 2006, when I found a place to rent that had a really nice 2 bay garage, and ended up moving in
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FDCP_0001.jpg&hash=538ce6b6d74df64351718ebbfd7bd89ae52fa059) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/DCP_0001.jpg.html)
the whole reason I moved there was to work on my car... the landlord didn't like this idea, even though he said it was ok before I signed the lease.. fucker..
I still worked on it a little, but was always worried he would come in and see it.. I tore out the interior of the new car to swap over the conversion harness from the previous car
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fcrxteardown.jpg&hash=8ce5a0f52d981c49f8c3aeaf46177e61fae036c4) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/crxteardown.jpg.html)
this was a big fucking pain in the ass. the harness had to be swapped from the front to back
I continued to search through the forums, learning, and buying up any parts I could find while my car was sitting.
I worked on chipping my ecu to run turboedit, and a datalogger

in 2007, my friend offered to let me build a motor up in his garage so that I could get it ready to swap

continued.. again, sorry about the shitty camera pics from years ago. its funny how a phone with a 3MP camera was the.....

tits!
i hauled the engine and alot of collected parts over to my buddies garage, so i could at least get things moving along again. here, i am test fitting some parts i picked up, before we tore down the motor. i picked up an obd1 dohc zc intake manifold, which allowed me to bolt a b18b 60mm throttle body up. this also moved my map sensor from the firewall. i also bought a rebuilt garrett .48/.60 turbo to replace my other one.. i was worried that when the rod spun a bearing, the metal flaked screwed the old turbo.

during teardown, i decided to pickup an obx lsd for my transmission. since they dont make one for a d16a1 motor, i found out that one for an 00 civic si fit right into there with a 5 minute modification.

while the block was apart, i also decided to try out that devcon shit that hotrex tried, just to see what it was all about.. i know, it was a stupid idea, but i was trying to be cheap back then.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FFeb17_005.jpg&hash=92d1aa8319845fe07fa3a22625545c92168d7b34) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/Feb17_005.jpg.html)

unfortunately, in 2009, i was kicked out of my apartment with the garage. my landlord sold the property, and the new owner was going to give the place to his secretary to live.. bitch! i found a place a couple months later, but it didnt have a garage. the car sat.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.petites-parisiennes.com%2FFHG%2FBANK%2FIMAGES_MD%2F37-11.008.jpg&hash=86da9023a797eed7314a44aecc5ba295eede0831)
i continued engine the build, and fitted more and more of the parts that were purchased. i started with some tuner toys rods, and race engineering wiseco turbo pistons that were made for the d16a1/dohc zc (9:1)
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fd16a1pistons.jpg&hash=12a163a5bc710394abcba84db243e3f3a15ca1af) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/d16a1pistons.jpg.html)
the head was port and polished in the garage and installed with a rare HKS headgasket. i bought delta regrinds and the jg cam gears from a group buy on another site. had to buy a dohc zc crank gear and an 88 prelude si timing belt to match the teeth on the gears.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fd16a1camgears.jpg&hash=d183065e94e05054fe2f082dbf23ef6c8e1cc024) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/d16a1camgears.jpg.html)
then installed the clutchmasters dual friction clutch
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fd16a1clutch.jpg&hash=6085288891a1a5f9f8d0551bccd59c2bf0f9e4e5) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/d16a1clutch.jpg.html)
finally, in 2010, i caught a break.. my buddy said that he had enough room to actually move the car into his garage to work on. the garage has a 4 point lift, and every tool you could imagine. this was some great news! the car was literally pulled out of the corner it was hiding in. he had a large trailer with a winch that made quick work of it, even with flat tires and seized brakes.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fcrxmurder.jpg&hash=053f4405ee20a2942329adf7d64d77228c4c0b79) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/crxmurder.jpg.html)

the day that we got the car there, we started tearing out the old carbed motor that hadnt been out of the car since 86. the project was finally moving forward again
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fcrxmotorout.jpg&hash=877ca9da28bcb7c808ec886ebb2bc9675b07e6e8) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/crxmotorout.jpg.html)
the built motor was finished, the converted wiring harness was completely installed, and we started bolting the engine into the bay.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fenginein.jpg&hash=925fb9c9db79833c08875b96e208cdbde3bb15a8) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/enginein.jpg.html)
by 2011, everything was running, the car was driving... unregistered, but still driving. it was finally car whole car again.. until.. we jacked it up one more time to check the exhaust. the fucking corner of the car collapsed when we lifted it up into the air.
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fcrxrust.jpg&hash=1d1ab151604dc42ad3beb0b0b7b3660173d90ea4) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/crxrust.jpg.html)
we started planning on cutting out the old panels, and welding new ones in. the jack points would be reinforced by welding square tubing on. as we started to tear apart the car more, and strip the undercoating (what was left of it), we noticed that the rust had spread into the torsion bar mounts. there was really no safe way of repairing this properly.. I was so close to getting this finished, but never imagined the rust was that bad. sucking Japanese, never undercoating the car properly!
to be continued..
-
the project hit an enormous snag.. the car sat again until 2013 while I planned what to do next. I continued selling off parts that I figured I would no longer need. at that point, I got the opportunity to move into my buddies house, and pay some rent. this is the house that has the enormous garage with a lift in it.. I was pretty fucking excited about that. since my rusty ass car was sitting there, I decided to start tearing it down, and possibly sell off the good parts
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2Fengine-3.jpg&hash=1496da730a0c7ee5d2193d37ad9ff1891389841d) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/engine-3.jpg.html)
a few months later, I got a "lucky" break.. ill tell you why its in quotes later. a guy from the rpr website that I frequent, was selling his whole stockpile of cars and parts. one of the cars he had was in my price range. it was shipped over from Arizona to him in jersey. I contacted him immediately, and we began exchanging info. he was asking a little much for it, so I talked him down a bit. the car is an 87 crx si.. RUST FREE!
we made arrangements for him to drop it off for me, since I didn't have access to the trailer at the time. the day finally came that he delivered it.. but as he pulled twisted rad support.. what the fuck? really?? after a bit of arguing, I ended up keeping the car. after all, it was still a rust free car, and I had enough parts to build one good one
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG0854.jpg&hash=00dc4fbc7abe7540ea2b35b8293a0adb20d7456e) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG0854.jpg.html)
... oh wait, I almost forgot..
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.brianaleeextreme.com%2Fhosteds%2Fhornysecretary%2F11.jpg&hash=5ead4764e7354ea79f66e798e280cecb6f5f476d)
I rolled it into the garage, and started to build one good car out of two. I started I pile of spare parts.

once again, I had to tear out the fucking d16a1 converted wiring harness, front to back..

I picked up a few more parts along the way too, and started bolting as many existing and new parts onto the new car as I could. these include rare monkeyztek coilovers (made specifically for 84-87 Hondas), some kyb gr2's all around, a walbro pump, new upgrade motoring torsion bars, adjustable panhard rod, a full energy suspension bushing kit and some new old school shoes

torsion bars. top is stock, and bottom is the 27.5mm. these are definitely needed with a motor swap. it bottoms out like crazy withought them
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG1036.jpg&hash=5b224189a0c6a28ba2e968fde799a67e3227e138) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG1036.jpg.html)
finally, after getting all of the main body panels moved, it was time to drop out the old motor. that's when we found a nice little gift the previous owner left us.. this fucktard cut a hole in the drivers side frame rail so that he could access the crank pulley bolt.. he cut all the way through so that you could see straight through the fender well.. can anyone see it in pic 2? yea, its not small.. we also found out that the twisted rad support also twisted some of the front frame rail and mounting points for the body panels.. probably because the rail was weakened by the hole.. ugh.. another snag.

first things first, we had to straighten the rail, and replace the whole front support. my old car was a perfect candidate for this, since it will be made into scrap at some point anyways.
the sawzall is a magical tool. im keeping the old car around in case there are any other parts I have to liberate from it. on the new car, I gave the engine bay a nice power washing to get a full idea of the damage I was working with:
old car

new car after power wash.. look how it shines

while we were planning on how to straighten out everything, I started working on other shit that needed to get done. I started with power washing the wheel wells, and underneath the car.. I love having a lift! after it dried, I went and bought a case of undercoating, and got to work
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG1063.jpg&hash=2c387a51e7c0161196b37ac5fb0aab37ee1cdefe) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG1063.jpg.html)
I also read on rpr that people were trying to find different rear sway bars that fit.. one guy went to the junk yard, and found out that theres a grand caravan that has the same measurements. I went and picked one up for $11, bought new end links for it, and made some mounts out of angle iron.. this shit is beefy!

we finally decided what to do about the front support.. it wasn't going to be easy, but it had to be done
to be continued

thanks guys.. sorry about this long ass story

at the end of 2013, I planned on removing every spot weld on the front supports, and weld a replacement on.. this was done with a lot of pb blaster as lubricant, and a spot weld drill from harbor freight. it was $5 and looks like a mini hole saw with a spring loaded guide in the middle. after about 50 spot welds, I was able to remove the whole bent front support.. again using the sawzall to cut the main lower bent part off.

as of early 2014, ive mainly been working on a few main things.. the wiring harness, and the radiator support. after a lot of pulling on the frame, hitting shit with a hammer, welding, and grinding, it was finally time to start putting it together. we tacked the new support into place to test fit everything. it all lined up perfectly! my buddy welded up that damn hole in the frame finally, and braced everything that was bent. once its painted, you wont be able to tell it was ever there.. my camera started to take a shit after this..

the wiring harness had to be fixed up. after years of pulling it out multiple times, a couple of the wires started to break at the plugs. I bought 500ft of 16 gauge wires (that's what these old cars use mostly, and a 50ft spool of 16 gauge. while I was fixing shit, I thought to myself, why not tuck some of the harness and move some of the wires?? the way the oem harness was set up in these cars was ass backwards. it originally had an external coil that was mounted on the drivers side, and after the conversion, I had wires running all over the engine bay.. it looked sloppy. there were also plugs from old vacuum advance boxes that were never going to be used again.

I removed the rest of the a/c components. luckily I found my old 87 crx a/c delete vent pipe. removing all of the excess shit so far saved me about 20 lbs.. that's not including all of the main a/c hardware and pump
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FApr15_002.gif&hash=cd868f40a3059094275ac8914a05951a2a2be57a) (http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/Apr15_002.gif.html)
that's really where im at up to date. I have to finish welding the front support, then work on some bondo action, and painting the engine bay before the motor goes in. Im almost done with the wiring, but I need to source some shielded wire. meanwhile, im still buying new parts to bolt on. thanks to hiprofile for his sweet ass injectors, and im also slowly collecting parts for an obd1 conversion. the turbo parts are sitting in a box, waiting to be fitted on once the motor goes in
thanks for your time.. ill keep updating as shit happens

1st picture winning.
I thought I had my car along time. Man 11 years. Some dedication. Specially being in pieces most of it.
Keep chuggin along. That thing will be fun finished

thanks man.. it was a long, tough road. mostly trying to revolve my life around transporting a non-running car every time I moved.. making sure that the landlords had no problem letting it sit. I couldn't tell you how much time and money was spent on this damn thing. I just cant wait until its done.

Seriously? What a fucktard.
-
Yea, the previous owner shouldn't have a car... what was he thinking? Luckily there wasn't any other half ass, hack job shit done to the car that we could see.
As an update, I'm continuing the work on the wiring harness. I went to the junk yard yesterday, and picked up some harness plugs and shielded wiring. I can't tell you how many hours its taking me to redo the harness, but I want it done right. If I can get it all done, I can start bolting the interior back in.
-
Looks good. Keep us posted on progress.

11 years and your still not boosted!........... DO WORK!
-
So, just some small updates today..
I'm still working on the wiring.. Just figuring out if I should relocate the battery to behind the passenger seat, or just mount it lower in the engine bay. If I relocate it, I already have the wires needed (sourced from a BMW)
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG0001.jpg&hash=6d0120a094ed0c101322412c605df84a25c691b2) (http://"http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG0001.jpg.html")
or
I saw people are making a sturdy bracket to lower the battery down lower on the frame rail. I don't want to worry about a master shutoff switch at this point yet... I will be taking this to a track.
The engine wiring is about complete.. I tucked the wires as much as possible without cutting any new holes.. I used a ton of grommets I found while browsing the junkyards for stuff. Everything was rerouted from the original honda harness.. They were ass backwards in some spots.
I also finished up my center console from a 92 civic. I have to work on the mounting hardware, but should be easy.
Before
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG0002-1.jpg&hash=0d60efd8ea2ee04fc46ea3feef11df9182a82f29) (http://"http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG0002-1.jpg.html")
After

Also, finally got my disc brake upgrade stuff together. Thanks to puddleskipper for some parts.. I appreciate your help! I sourced an 87 integra in a junkyard about an hour away.. First one in my area for years! I picked e rear caliper mounts, but forgot the proportioning valve when I was there.. Stupid me! I also purchased all new rear disc swap stuff.. Prelude master cylinder, 4 new discs, integra rear calipers, technafit braided lines, integra ebrake cables, integra proportioning valve, etc to make this all work. I'm also going to try 93 integra front calipers if they fit right.. The prop valve and front calipers aren't pictured. I then started mounting it all
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG1822.jpg&hash=1941b0f8de7f5ff3739133a4a138d31edd918bb9) (http://"http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG1822.jpg.html")
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG1825.jpg&hash=78950fb19f449f6d5c14d27d86fba0f2e798be12) (http://"http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG1825.jpg.html")
Then while browsing eBay the other day, I stumbled across this gem for $45 shipped!
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG1827.jpg&hash=5ad3ec357ae1536c4e9996cee91744039e84a1d6) (http://"http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG1827.jpg.html")
It is missing some plastic up top, but it can't be seen after mounting.
In other good news, the front radiator support is almost all welded in, and the welds ground down. This was the biggest pita ever!
That's all for now!
-
Now I don't feel so bad about working on the same car for 8 years without considering it finished.
Loving the build though. First gen CRX's are the shit.

I think this thread is PURE WIN. A good story & porn. Maybe not the most, but their all classy.

Someone on one of the Facebook CRX groups was selling 24mm torsion bars....

I think this thread is PURE WIN. A good story & porn. Maybe not the most, but their all classy.
Thanks, I appreciate it! I'll be adding some more in order to follow the rules, but its hard getting them on here since my girlfriend just moved in.. I'll have to be sneaky
No updates so far on the car, but just getting all of the parts together to install on my next days off. It's going to be a lot of work, but well worth it in the end
-
Finally just finished putting the caliper mounts on.. not sure why it took me so long, but got them together. While everything was off, I also installed chedda j's rear locking plate and links.
For anyone looking for early honda/Acura stuff, here's the place to go.. It's all made by him
http://cheddasauto.webs.com/ (http://cheddasauto.webs.com/)
The rear links have to be bent to fit.. or so I think. They seemed to rub the arm and alignment was off for mounting them to the locking plate. One nut didnt have enough thread to go on with the washer provided, but after tightening the link with only the nut to bend the link a bit, I was able to then install the washer. I also painted them black, because i wasnt digging the blue color they came in. Very Solid construction though.

For you guys that don't know, the older Hondas/acuras had a rear axle with a torsion bar inside..
Ater removing the torsion bar, your left with a big hole.. I want to find a cap for the axle hole
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fy131%2Fstaticchmbr%2Fcrx%2FIMAG1848_1.jpg&hash=846eff8e0c3ad9031f0e0af18736b85dfe030b56) (http://"http://s4.photobucket.com/user/staticchmbr/media/crx/IMAG1848_1.jpg.html")
I weighed the bar that I removed from the rear axle.. it was between 5-6 lbs.. at least this will help to offset the weight of the rear disks a bit.

A little trick I used to get the ebrake line out of the crx drum.. Use a small worm gear to press in all of the clips.. I still had to pry a little with a flat head, but it only took me 2 mins per side
