Title: Auto trans shifting issue related to fuel level
Post by: ironcrx on January 21, 2015, 03:43:41 AM
So I've never encountered this before and my interwebz searches haven't done shit

car: 1998 ford contour v6
Issue: when below 1/4 tank and getting to E, car shudders/hesitates before upshifting.  Simply: put car into drive and it refuses the shift up in gears unless its forced.  So as the car is moving along its not shifting up unless I high rev the hell out of it and pretty much force the car the move uo in gears (remember its an auto)

all this goes away and stays away when I refuel the car.  Only when fuel is getting low (but not when low fuel warning comes on) does this happen. Anything above 1/4 full tank its fine.

I don't get it.  Why the hell if the auto shifting affected by my fuel level?

If the engine isn't running right (running low on fuel pressure?) the trans won't shift right. I have had many trans complaints that was just a poorly running car. Tps sensor, map sensor ,vss, all that shit does double duty as well.

No codes present and everything runs great on the car.  Mpg are fine, not buring oil, not burning rich, no signs of lean burning either. Everything engine related to the car hasn't been an issue.

I can't wrap my head around what would cause a transmission to struggle shifting when the fuel level gets low.

Just make me happy and hook a fuel gauge up and go for a pull when the tanks low
