Whats up bitches. Been busy lately and havn't posted much. Here is my latest creation though. Not car related, but still ghetto as fuck. Quadcopter I made out of a board off a pallet, some scrap aluminum and other shit I had kicking around. Enjoy.

what did you use as a control board? what motors etc. interesting.
-
What a piece of shit.
I am in love.
-
Suppo 2208/14 motors
30Amp SimonK ESCs
KK2 flight controller
Orange Receiver
8" props
Board from Pallet - Wood
Aluminum channel from Lowes
Random fucking screws and shit
-
This is fucking awesome

Link on the bottom of the post. I will try to get some more vids though. Need to make a camera mount on it next.

Yeah I just noticed the link after switching to my desktop. Some cages around the blades and this thing is indestructible lol

Wow so for ~$150 you can get this thing flying? I remember when radios were >$250 for just a crappy FM, and $40 was cheap for a heavy ass NiMH 6-cell 3000mAh pack.
I'm amazed that it can lift off so fast using a chunk of wood. I got out of the hobby when brushless motors started popping up, but they seem to have amazing power.
-
$150 sounds about right. I have been in and out of the RC hobby for 20ish years now. It has really changed a lot in the last 5 years with the chinese copying everything and electric motors taking off. Crazy cool stuff you can do now though.
-
perfect stuff for the Chinese to be copying!! they build most of our shit!
-
I have three very modded "race" clod busters. The one has dual brushless but it's in pieces right now.
-
Got the compass on my APM working this morning so I should have gps holds and autopilot stuff all working this afternoon.
-
I love it! But where is the turbo? ;DDD Ok so I've always wanted one of these quad-copter things and have thought about building one. My idea is a bit more extreme. Imagine a long ranged multi-engine gas powered unit controlled with an Arduino processor and some accelerometers borrowed from a wii controller. Its possible! Problem is I'm only mechanically inclined and dumb as shit when it comes to electronics so I can build the quad copter and maybe get as far as setting up all the servos/camera equipment but am fucked after that unless I can find some Arduino programmers to work cheap/free.
-
Cutout all the excess wood to lighten it, do a cheap reinforcing if necessary, then do a remote camera on it :noel:

^ What he said. Make it on to an X type shape and move the battery low and center. It will be much more stable.
-
Speaking of Arduino's controlling it, just got my APM dialed in (APM is basically an Arduino with the accelerometer and barometer built into it.) No pics yet but just pulled off my first successful return to home and auto land with no intervention. Waypoints are next. I'll try to get some pics up of this hot mess tomorrow.
-
As far as CG, I dont think it's nearly as important on this as it is on airplanes and Helis. It's pretty dam stable as it is and will fly almost hands off.
-
One day you're gonna have to teach me some of this Arduino programming shit then. Good job on a successful flight home. You got any on-board video capabilities yet?
This gives me an idea for a long range PORN recording machine! Hover around neighborhoods by peoples windows and get some high res footage, Open website with some chinese IP and upload vids. Take perverts monthly credit card payments and laugh all the way to the bank! :noel:
How much $$$ you got in to this thing anyway?
-
No onboard video just yet. Thats coming soon though. Need to devise some kind of anti-vibration mount for the camera...and get a camera for it. So far minus my transmitter, I'm into it about $200ish bucks.

Walmart sells a dash cam for $40 that could come in handy for this.

Too easy! Make a poor mans gimbal using an arm pivoted at one end and suspended with elastics on the other where the camera is mounted. You thinking a go-pro for this or something cheap for now?
-
Go pro is to nice for this pile. I'm thinking Mobius. Their cheap and Chinese, just how I like them.

There are a few guys who like these as good as their gopros...

$60.
I am going to try a couple on the race truck this summer.

I was looking at the SJ4000's, ended up buying one of the new gopro Hero cameras. Their new entry level unit costs $130 and uses all the same mounts and accessories. Should do some awesome stuff to the action camera market as a whole (gopro has been setting the overall price point for a while now). I'll have more info about how much I like it after my ski trip later this week. I'll probably pick up an SJ4000 at some point as well though. Too cheap not to strap it to the front bumper when I go out to demolish some cones.
-
I'm sure you should be able to get a used first gen gopro for cheaper than the Mobius. You planning on a live video setup at all?
-
Yes, I want this to do live FPV video so I just need something that has video out. Still need to order the radio for the video though as well as a camera.
-
IF you decide to do go commercial, https://www.faa.gov/uas/ (https://www.faa.gov/uas/) :noel:

I saw that. I think it actually makes some decent sense. The line of sight part really sucks for people like amazon that want to do deliveries, but there is still a lot of commercial applications that could be done LOS. The rest of it I think really makes a lot of sense. Especially being a pilot. I really dont want these fucking things hanging out at 5000' Hell, I have flow this up to 200' so far and you can almost not see the dam thing.

I like the rule of only day time operation. :noel:
-
Yeah, that kind of sucks too. I've got a ton of lights on mine and it's pretty dam visible at night. Not sure I agree with that one.
