So since I have been chasing this squeeling noise on rachels car for about 6 monthes(going through belts & the like) I havent been able to figure out for the life of me what is wrong with this car.
car is
2002 mazda protege ES 125,000km
So today I finally get off my lazy ass and pull the ac/ps belt off to see if it makes the signature squeek on startup( the belt just starts squeeling when driving for no rhyme or reason), I then pull the alt/water pump belt off to single out the issue. The squeek stops( so thus it cannot be a timing belt tensioner)
The crank pulley is slightly pitted on the surface where the belt rides which I thought was weird. So I then pull the put the belts side by side to see wtf was up, seems there is small wear marks on the side of the belt as if it was moving back and forth on the pulley.
SO my question is, do these things wear out that often? Seems like its a weird thing to wear out after so few km.

Replaced a couple on Honda accords that just feel apart. Many oem Honda units are multi piece units and will fall apart literally.

I know I have a couple of them in the garage that have a bit of cracking on the rubber part. But I thought it was like a 260,000km+ wear thing.

I only work on hondas so I have no idea about other brands but the motors werent crazy super duper high mileage. all under 150,000 MILES. stock cars too

Im sure weather conditions cant help either with the rubber if your in a extreme conditions.

I had an accident on Dec14 2007 and I think there was some around 7000 (Front end got damaged) (bumper,hood, headlight, radiator, fan, radiator support, and labour)
265 all wheel horsepower, just boost it up, stcok was 235 on the wheel

we had like a 08 Ridgline that had the outer ring strait up missing on a car that came in with a belt squeak :o belt was just riding on the rubber dampener ring. was cool lol...
anyway, maybe hers is shifted on the rubber ring? or its just a gay mazda, that your gonna sell for a gay subi... :-*

If someone let a belt slip along time it can eat out the grove so the belt grabs the bottem of the pulley instead of the sides. I dont care what you do it will sqeel. Now at just over 100,000 km's thats kinda early, are you sure that loki isn't fucking up the part number? :P

no I pulled all the belts off today and looked at the pulley. It just seems like is is pitted on the actual belt riding surface. WTF?
So I am going to order the egay one and see if that fixes the problem. Its either that or the end of the crank is slightly bent( who knows)
This car comes up with problems for no reason, I fix one issue and then another pops up. Like now there is a solid CEL. seriously car what the fuck. Its not even abused, its grandma driven. Going to have it go to a shop so I can get the codes ran( to see wtf is up)

It is the alt belt for sure
so its either the water pump pulley, alt pulley, or crank pulley
there is no crunchyness and all pulleys spin freely. One can only assume that its the pulled on the alt side.

You should also check with a steal ruler the pulley alignment.

I could never find a used one for cheap so i just welded the fucker back together :-X It only has about 1/2" of wobble now haha :somb:

You should also check with a steal ruler the pulley alignment.
my thoughts exactly, heres some other ideas..
is this a serpentine setup? likely if the alternator or WP were replaced at sometime and is not in alignment with the rest of the accessories that are driven from the crank. does the car have A/C? because it only does this sometimes right..... i have seen it on fords where the ac condenser clicks in for its cycle and the belts go nuts, mostly because of misalignment or the compressor wheel is dry and needs some spit on it ;)
have you washed the engine compartment really well somewhat 'just' before this problem started occurring?
hit all the pullies with some wd40 while its running just behind the pulley...worth a shot anyways

I can see that the pulley is vibrating visably.
Seems that only it happens intermittently, and only sometimes.
so for example it happens at night when its cold/wet
when the fan kicks on
and sometimes for no reason
so it must be the pulley?

With higher rpm's the pulley should vibrate more if it is the issue
