Fist off build thread is here

The story
Built myself installed myself with a helping hand, and all hook up by myself. Start up went flawless besides the stupid hunting idle that is new. Big thanks to dvst8r, 90dx, Urban, brine04, loki and other locals for guidance, welding and other 'here and there' shit.
I will post start up vids of the start up when i can find a host to take 12min plus vids (mosly its will take too long to upload to this post right now).
Halfway home (of at 120km drive) the temptation to resist boost was too great.... seemed to be running fine and all so one WOT pull in 4th gear and I had time to think it felt lazy and look down at the tack. POP POP at 5500-6000rpm pulled over and Subaru death rattle ensued. Felt much like the first time it broke two ring lands.
Timing MAY... have been the fuck up here. I honestly don't recall. I'm thinking I set the timing at 13* on the digital gun but lined up with the stock 16* timing mark :'( I also just wanted to get home so was using USED spark plugs (the same ones it had in it from the first failure :-\).
Tear down ensued....
Overall

plugs from right to left (1-4), No. 1 plug looked oily and two others seemed to have this concrete looking plaque on them.

Sleeves appears ok, no signs of burn or leaks on the HG, no milky coolant, no milky oil, both fluids were still full up. Pistons appear fine from the top, no melted corners, or holes in the tops of pistons... and can feel ring tension in each hole, head looks as installed.
Cliffs:
subarru death rattle
motor has 58km on it
too much timing
no visible mechanical damage
fouled spark plug?? or??
-
omg the strap on those plugs :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X
-
fuck trev. you should have asked for plugs
I have a box of 20.........
Seems from information, might need a new piston
flat rate it

Damn right.
I would pull piston 2 and 3 as the spark plug looks the worse on those.
-
plugs in 5 heat range. you should at least be using ngk 7's
-
pistons are all out as of last night, no visible damage [pics when i get home], which is good for obvious reasons, but just plain dumb of me for re-using old plugs :(
next steps i guess are to leak test the head just to make sure it didn't do something stupid like burn an ex valve,... then reassemble with the right heat range plugs...preferably new ones :P

Hows your coil look? I had the same kinda thing happen to me and my coil cooked itself.

It seems kinda strange to be the coil in that it runs, just sounds like a subie, I.E at least one dead cylinder.
-
Damn, the walls still have a mirror shine. Those plugs are flaming gay.

ball hone goodness ;) the rings were beginning to seat pretty well.

The coil i think is fine, but thanks for the suggestion I will double check before reinstall. come to think of it that little spring that goes in the cap had fallen out and i replaced it with one and maybe it rattled loose/out of place. this will sound dumb...but what is that little spring for in a stock dizzy? like a safety ground or something? the contact for the rotor is at the center of the cap... but does the spring carry current?
-
Maybe stupid but I don't remember reading any compression numbers. Did you do any kind of compression or leak down before you pulled it apart?
-
No he didn't Trevor decided to do this one the hard way.

Its hard to diagnose a problem with no compression test, it would suck if it was an ignition problem. Those plugs would have been like glow plugs. :-\
-
Was the motor tuned at all? It could have been something simple like the spark plug wire came off the plug and it was running on 3 cylinders.
Do the bearings look fine?
Pistons 1 and 4 look as if they may have had contact with valves, but it could be camera angle/lighting.
Get yourself some NGK 4554's when you put it back together. Then get it tuned.

Those are ugly plugs. Peppered FTL. Do they look a bit oily to anyone else?
For the record, it was the weasel that went pop.
-
Yea the plugs are disgusting, pity i didn't do a comp test before, i will try to do one before i spark it up this time. My thinking was pure sadness and ''maybe... maybe'' its just minor and i can save the bore because i shut it off quickly. No valve contact, its just the light. If anything is causing compression issues it'll be a valve seat now.
thanks for the ngk number, what kinda heat and gap are we talking about with those? I have some stock replacement but with the 7 heat range. will grab some 4554's too for curiosity's sake.
Planning to make the tuning sesh in Washington at the end of the month if everything comes together.
-
4554 are an 8 heat range non resistor plug. They work pretty good for a lot of setups. You can gap them stock if you like depending on boost level and lower the gap if you have some breakup under boost. I usually start around .035 myself to be on the safe side. They may be too cold if you arent running much boost.
Those wires look kinda old too.
-
Alright here's what I think it is because ive seen it before. the wet plug is fouled and it burn't through the plug wire somewhere and is sparking to the plug tube.
I had I guy ive tuned for call me at a gas station saying his car was blown up. I rolled over to check it out and found what I just explained. Look the plugwires over for burns in the sides.
-
Thanks for the suggestions.
After all that, it did turn out to be the spark plugs. That is the only thing i changed after all the inspections. The plug wires aren't great, but i did look and none are burned. Head leak tested out fine, and it went back on. I ended up grabbing a clean set of autolite 6 heat range plugs from the hindu auto store since that's all that was available on a sunday afternoon. it fired right up no problem, and with a few tweeks to the TB, no more hunting idle either. Set the valves and drove it home. :noel:

Pimp dude, Are we gona see this beast at the dyno day?

Pimp dude, Are we gona see this beast at the dyno day?
It won't be much of a beast unless he magiclly gets his injectors, map sensor, and mbc, before then. :D
-
Pimp dude, Are we gona see this beast at the dyno day?
I was going to be for sure if I got my injectors/map sensor/find a mbc. Kinda got bummed when RHMT was down, cause there was no way i could order and get my shit here in time. So now I'm not so sure. Will likely be a last minute decision. Plus the last day for being allowed to cross the USA border without a passport is the scheduled day I'm returning, could be tight.
Flip side is stay here and go bracket racing/ river tubing with girls in bikinis....
-
Bikini's = +1
Autolite = -1 Ngk or Die :)
-
I'm sure spiker or someone will have extra spark plugs that you could buy.
-
I have a used set ill give you if you show up ;D
-
I kinda really want to come now if for nothing else than to show up with my ride and just chill. Think open downpipe is cool to cross the boarder with?
-
 :P
-
Tell them your exhuast has rusted off from all the fucked up winters you got.
