Title: Real HMT catch can write up
Post by: DmC on March 08, 2009, 07:56:54 PM
Catch cans are needed to release positive crank case pressure. Basically as the piston moves up and down in the bore it displaces as much air as at the top of the piston. Creating too much pressure in the block, and on top of the head in the valve cover.

The stock pcv system isn't nearly up to the job when you install a turbo the wear of blow by that is boost pressure escaping past the rings as well as crank case pressure pushing through on the down stroke will quickly wear an engine out and blow out seals causing oil leaks everywhere

The answer is a better way to relieve excess pressure.

Ever since my valve cover gasket and oil cap were leaking I went ahead and grabbed some new ones.   At the hardware store I picked up some 5/8 heater hose and 4 5/8 pipe to hose fittings as well as some JB Weld.

At Advanced I grabbed a small filter for $9 I felt like a ricer while paying for it ):

Then I took  some weird Hugo Boss water bottle I got out of Fowee’s garage and drilled some 5/8 holes in it and my valve cover. I used some brake clean and water to rinse all the metal shavings out. It’s a y8 it doesn’t need any help spinning bearings

(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv143%2FDmC_01%2Fcatchcanwriteup011.jpg%3Ft%3D1236554864&hash=4f1d5c70cbe539d5505434e7ed15c9b3c4cf37ad)

The breather filter worked out really slick. The bottle has a screw in cap so I just drilled a hole in it slightly smaller than the rubber hose piece on the bottom of the filter and squeezed it into the top of the screw in cap.

Here it all is ready to go back on the car.

(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi678.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fvv143%2FDmC_01%2Fcatchcanwriteup013.jpg%3Ft%3D1236555844&hash=594a49035b08c04c1610964d70a6600812343c1e)

I needed a good way to mount it so I took a hard look at the charcoal canister and decided it had to go. I took my chop saw out and cut the mounting bracket off of it and used a Tbolt clamp to clamp the bracket to the catch can.

Here it all is installed on the car. When I have more time I’m going to add a vent to the block.

and thats all there is to it.
Here's a pic of the whole car because it annoys me when people don't post one.

I did that so oil would have to run up hill to get in the catch can any other way and it would have been draining right in and filling the can up all the time. And it looks serious with that big tube running like that.  :noel:

Minor detail, but the excess crankcase pressure mainly comes from blowby.  No matter how good your ring seal is, with the amount of cylinder pressure these things are seeing, you are going to have blowby.

Looks great man.  I always love DIY stuff.

How would you stop it from filling up all the time? get a baffled catch can? Im removing the baffle on my B16 and welding 2 -10an male fittings on it, but I didnt know how to keep the oil from just filling the can up constantly.

drill a hole on the bottom put install O2 bung with screw and let it drain/ did you tap the Valve cover or is the Nipple J/b welded to it

that is bad ass  :noel:

I am going to do the same thing but I'm using reciever/dryer that is not being used.

I'm assuming you are still running the pcv like normal then.

Wow I drove the car to work today and it was an overall improvement. The car revs easier and has a small amount more power at higher rpms. I can smell a little oily smell when I'm getting on it but I checked the can and it's clean with no oil in it yet it's just venting!

No pcv needs worked with more The black box on the back of the block is hanging open and leaking oil residue on the back of my motor.
I'm going to take the box off and just run another hose to the catch can.

Another write up coming tonight.

They will both be welded on, I got the baffle out, I just havent had the nipples welded on, im still mid-build. If you were to add a drain back to the bottom of that catch can, where would you run your line to? the old stock catch can?

I would probably tap a fitting into the top of the oil pan just like a turbo oil return.

My next write up is going to have to wait for the weekend. I didn't have enough time tonight.

Is that filter even capable of flowing enough, remember mine on my valve cover on dyno, PRESSURE was not released  but anyways you should of spend the extra $6 and got the valvecover breathers for v8's like this

(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi286.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fll90%2Fwidebody93%2Fcatchcan4.jpg&hash=3d91217a7b122509eea4c350f52acb058761b8c3)
And comes with garmets to press seal

1.25 inch opening a piece

But thats a awesome setup, and do I see's a egay manifold thats?
You devil of a child

Nah mines working good so far just a drop or two of oil has gotten into the can and the car runs so much better. The improvement was really unexpected. I will probably run the line from the back off the block today.
