Title: MX-5?
Post by: E-b0la on May 19, 2009, 09:49:16 PM
So for the summer I've been thinking about getting another car, especially since I drive farther to work and my truck gets mediocre gas mileage (20mpg on a GOOD day)

I saw patsmx5's build thread, and turbomiata.net, and they look like they're pretty fun when they're boosted, which I would obviously want to do.

Pro's:
RWD
boosted = quick car
good mpg
convertible = chick magnet
inexpensive to find used and usually in decent shape.

Con's
Still a miata
weak Rear diff
I'm not very familiar with them

Now, i know the 94 and up got the 1.8L and the 1.6 was found in earlier model's. Is there any huge difference in these engines as far as internals go?

Found this one on craigslist $2900 appears it's from NC:

Get a 94'. The diffs aren't really weak in 94+'s. The drivetrain in general is pretty solid, given a little mechanical empathy. Most agree 250whp is the upper limit of safe on a stock drivetrain. I'm around 270whp on a stock drivetrain, maybe more. I just don't grab gears hard, and keep the tune conservative. She's fine.

I've read that RX-7 rear diff parts are swappable, but I haven't gotten into depth with it yet. Wondering if it would be worth it to swap an RX-7 LSD diff in.

Dump a twin turbo 5.0 in it and some corvette shit for the diff.

Or just keep it stock, rape it and look gay

You can put the RX7 lsd into the miata diff. Yeah. I'm trying to find one to do that right now.  :P They're hard to find. Stopped making them 20 years ago....  The transmissions are the first thing to break. People that drive the dog shit out of them with 0 mechanical empathy break shit at 200whp. Others push over 300 on stock drivetrains.

are you talking about the rx7 drivelines?

or the miata ones?

there is a lot of info about miata dirvelines on rx7club.

Any way you could put a 240sx diff into one? They seem to handle abuse half decently.

boosted = more mpg on the highway also.
LS3 swap if you're going to v8 it.
motors are good
transmission & drivetrain are quesiton marks. Sometimes they bust, sometimes not. Treate them like anything else, if you plan on getting greedy - assume it will break in the near future.

Miata's are handsome little cars. They're only girly to guys use to overcompensating. Get one and watch every girl you know want you to drive them around. Dealer friend of mine has bought & sold three just this spring season - always keeping them around a good month to drive around in.

L33 in a Miata = perfect.

FYI, Miatas don't get much better than 20 mpg.  Maybe 24-25?  I think it's gearing and old O2 sensors, among other things.

Mine gets 33-35 highway, depending on how many boosted pulls I make and if the A/C is on the whole time or not.

Also, if you looked 1 more state south, you'd see me selling my boosted miata.  Ad says its a 98 but its really a 96. typo

I originally bought my 91 because I borrowed it from a friend and crashed it. I had the body redone by a local autobody school for next to nothing and planned on flipping it. After I drove it for a month or so, I couldnt really get used to hopping back in a fwd car... I have now had it for over a year(I usually sell cars every 3 to 4 months) and have put over 12,000 miles on it. I autocross 5-6 times a year and beat the shit out of it every time I drive it. I consistantly get 25 mpg no matter what I do to the car. The b6 1.6 is one hell of a motor in my book. I wish I had a 1.8 but I cant complain about the reliability factor of the car. Mine just rolled 150k last week and runs like a top. It uses a couple quarts of oil between changes but nothing dramatic. heres a few pics...

I guess I really don't think its that bad for a 20 year old car with 150,000 HARD driving miles on it.

My old supra '86.5 used no more than a quart between changes at 260k miles and it was driver hard

Do you want a fucking cookie...? I realize it needs to be reringed. Shit, I don't even plan on keeping the 1.6 or even a mazda motor in it. The engine was the last thing to be touched since it starts and runs everytime all the time no matter what. It needed suspension, tires, bushings and seats body work and a paint job way worse than an engine. If it ain't broke, don't fix it right?
Title: Re: MX-5?

Yeah you must have some shitty seals, leaking head gasket, or something. That much oil shouldn't be leaving the engine.

Good info though guys. I think I might look at a couple near me this weekend just for shits and giggles.

Some engines just eat oil, LS1's eat oil from the factory, some use up to a quart between oil changes, im lucky, mine only uses about a 1/2

I know what you mean, FWD just kinda sucks.  RWD is much more fun, its more fun feeling like youre getting pushed vs being dragged.  Any decent power FWD car is so tractionless it isnt funny.  RWD doesnt become tractionless, it just pulls wheelies

and barrel rolls

The older miatas are bad about the cam angle senser (CAS) leaking oil behind the engine. Could easily be the source of the oil leak.
