I have a friend (Mario, turbodEG on ex-HMT) who's looking to build a computer to mix/record/manipulate/etc music on. I don't know if it matters bit it's the usual multicultural underground urban hiphop-esque type thing; beats and samples, some synths, blended with live musicians and vocals. He's the stereotypical artist type and doesn't know or care about specs, the shit just has to work.
What's bang for the buck? What's really good for not much more? I don't know dick about the whole affair. Educate me.

He's a mini-baller. He always has nice stuff, but shops for parts on R/HMT. It was his car that had the sweet cc-fab topmount I tuned a while back.
So, recession specials are preferred.
