Title: Re-Blacken Your Textured Moldings With Peanut Butter
Post by: Sinister on June 06, 2009, 07:48:15 PM

Quote from: Corradokid135
Our B3's textured moldings had turned to grey over time like the rest so we figured we would try something a bit different than Black Again or shoe polish. Instead, we used creamy peanut butter! I got the idea from surfing the mkII forums a while back when a couple people did it to their fading fender flairs, it works by having the oil from the peanuts soak into the plastic. Anyways i figured i could do a little DIY/Results thread to show how the front bumper turned out after we tryed it.  We will have updates as time goes on to say how well it held up to washes and rain what not as well as some other things we have tyed it on that i will post later  :) .

First off, go to your local grocery store and get some creamy peanut butter, The cheaper the better!....
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff261%2FCorradokid135%2Fpeanutbutter007.jpg&hash=ed3e83799a2519ef37927c5e704b1ee41488c93d)

Next, tape off the areas that you are putting the peanut butter onto so that it doesn't get all over the paint

No Pic sorry  :banghead:

After you do that it's time to get messy. Stick a few fingers into the peanut butter and start applying it to the area you are blackening pretty generously so that it is all covered and has an even coat, then wait about ten minutes with the peanut butter soaking into the plastic area ( that's all we left it but longer shouldn't hurt anything)....
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff261%2FCorradokid135%2Fpeanutbutter006.jpg&hash=1ced49fde4ddf08d8efc316d73fc16151866229f)
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff261%2FCorradokid135%2Fpeanutbutter005.jpg&hash=f88c65b022def95ea0806be1a7681b406109f955)

After letting the peanut butter sit on the plastics for the desired time you choose take an old shower towel or t-shirt and start wiping off the peanut butter, as you can see the difference in color between the bumper and side molding is very drastic....
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff261%2FCorradokid135%2Fpeanutbutter003.jpg&hash=1b4f678cc72eb49a3be1fb5f4058344477e2ce29)

After all that you should be left with a outcome close to this....
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff261%2FCorradokid135%2Fpeanutbutter008.jpg&hash=2213d871f941c1cabc2ab4d9f3344a4f554ff96e)

BEFORE
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff261%2FCorradokid135%2Fpeanutbutter001.jpg&hash=af23a5d05774a818e764bddb0d5ad8bf0d553e0f)

AFTER
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff261%2FCorradokid135%2Fpeanutbutter002.jpg&hash=f8759d848c60e38bab4c0a6bca6dc89e3297dc61)

And one last comparison, front bumper has been done but side moldings haven't...
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi236.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fff261%2FCorradokid135%2Fpeanutbutter004.jpg&hash=9effb78265715eeb1b9d8c2a5f15818d952ace15)

Like i said i will be updating the progress of how it holds up to the weather and if we have any problems with dogs trying to lick the bumpers :P . Overall so far i am very happy with the outcome and i hope it helps anyone else trying to figure out the nicest way to keep the moldings black for as long as possible!

Someone should try this out and see how it goes. Seems really random but if it works and gets the shine back, its a nice cheap way to make the moldings on your car look better.

No it actually works. Tried it on my Civic grill a few months back. Only lasted about a week before faded again.

Fucking retarded.  Just spray with something like this:

I have used it many times, and when applied properly, it looks great for a very long time.

wow... there is a more permanent way to actually fix those moldings...

use a heat gun! we did this on like every car in our driveway. just use the heat gun on the moldings, be careful on thinner ones they will melt or bow  :-X  it just melts the wax or whatever shit that is on the moldings, and brings back that nice black finish. O0

I wash my CRX once a month, my del sol gets washed by the rain, and never by me, occasionally I clean and vacuum the interior though.

If you want you shit black again, mask everything up really really fucking good, clean it up with rubbing alcohol, and then paint it.  No peanut butter will help your car look better, VW fags just don't have anything better to do other than putting food that could have been donated to hungry/starving people on their car.

isnt that what that pledge furniture polish is? sometimes i use that instead of armor all cause it smells good...

heat gun kicks ass, i used it on my 450r bring back some of the spots where my boots rubbed the plastic white on my mx bike. it takes the right touch though, a friend of mine wanted to try it cause it worked good on mine and ruined his plastic.

Meh, I wash the PO'sche and the wolfsburg at work, but the dirty colt slut has probably 50lbs or better of mud/debris that wont get washed til I decide it weighs too much.

sigh.

the black is being faded by the sun. nothing can avoid that. period.

for interior, the ultimate solution.

take a tub of vaseline and rub it all over the interior trim pieces that you want to be shiny or reconditiond.

make sure its a nice hot day, and just leave that shit in your car for an hour with the windows up. let that shit bake into real good, and then after an hour or two, go back and smear the excess off.

many detailers swear by this.

Title: Re: Re-Blacken Your Textured Moldings With Peanut Butter

the duplicolor works very well. the SEM bullshit has to have primer and doesn't have enough plastersizer in it. tends to flake off some formulas of bumpers/trim. plus the fumes will knock you over a block away. never seen the uber cheap duplicolor bumper/trim paint do that.

IDC how many people have hardons for SEM, the exterior paints are all over rated.

and seriously... fucking buy trim paint. back to black, restore all of that shit is short term fucking fail. once you get some paint on there itll quit fading. black has more pigment than any other color and is the most resistant to it.
