Title: Bear Hunt 2009
Post by: QikEnuF on June 07, 2009, 04:18:11 PM
Any of the WPA nogs or NC nogs have decent Black Bear populations roaming around near them?  Just got done with the load up for this years trip, and now the planning phase starts.  Looking for locations/places to stay/places to drink/etc.  I need a rug.

Incidentally, here is the load I'm gonna run, along with the 3 shot group from today's testing..

Remington 700 ADL Chambered in .30-06
Weaver 3x9x40 Glass
150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip
49.5gr of IMR-3031
3 Shot Group @ 100 Yards
Clear Day ~5mph easterly wind
Shot using a front bag+forearm

My mom dated a guy for 18 years (hell they probably still date, they're just old as hell) who was a big bear hunter around here.  There's a lot of that going on in this area, ~7 years back he said there were more bear than he'd seen since being a little kid hunting with is granddad.  I might be able to hook you up with permission to go on some private property, but likely not as well since it'd be through a friend and you're a northerner.  I can definitely ask around, though.

Haha northerner, not hardly.  If you could hook something up, I'd buy you some good beer or something, and share the killt meat with you.

Only mountain folk I know are my family in the mountains of Pennsylvania and Tennessee.  Oh yeah, and I live in the mountains of VA :)

I know they're called mountains in PA but thats a stretch, they're just big hills compared to the mountain ranges of the world.

Like I said before call the PA game commission. I've seen bears a time or two around here but not too often, but I bet theres places close to here that you could hunt in freely.

Too expensive/time consuming to breed/train/run dogs for 2 weeks out of the year lol.  You looking to do some deer hunting up our way this winter, Dan?

What does bear taste like? Make some jerky and hook a nig up.

Bear is greasy due to the fat, but if you trim it and cook it like you know what you're doing, it tastes pretty good.  If you are serious about a rug, it costs at least a grand to get it made, probably closer to 2k, but let me know.

Scott, I know I can shoot better.  The load wasn't developed for accuracy, it was developed for lighter recoil and good penetration.  I'll take some target rounds out today and see what happens?

Bear is pretty greasy, and gamey.  I've had people swear it makes a good stew, but the only thing I've ever heard non-hunters say they like is using some of the bear fat to make gravy.

Bear is not good eats.

It's stringy. Georgia boys eat Black Bear and bring some down here to Florida but it's such a stringy meat I wouldn't eat it in a stew.

I really think it's kind of senseless to hunt bear, bow hunt a hog if you want a rush.

Done the bowhunt feral hogs thing.  I've bow hunted Black Bear too.  I want to be lazy this year and not have to get within 50 yards of something.  It makes excellent jerky

Greasy stringy shit meat would be good jerky.

If you soak it in something that tastes good.

Did you have dogs with you for those hunts, if so you're a faggot, if not you're a man.

See my earlier posts, dogs are too expensive/time consuming to have to breed/train/use.  I do plan on using my Shepard pup for birds when he gets a bit older.

Terrestrial animals are overrated.

Hawaiian sling + Freediving = win.

Blackened grouper on the grill is epic.
