What flat screen should I buy. I'm looking at less than 1200. The only thing I really know to look for is brightness and contrast ratio but I can't find the specs for half of them.

Yeah, the Aquos don't list those specs. Regardless, I'd probably grab one of the Aquos, they have a high feedback rating (means as more than any other aspect, IMO) and they are the cheapest. 60Hz refresh vs 120Hz refresh is up to you, I'd probably go 120 if I wanted to try to hook one of them to a PC and do some light gaming.
BTW, your taste in porn is most excellent.
-
Fuck an Aquos. SHitty Tv. Owned one (42") for about 2 days and took it back. They have banding issues, SHITTY analog interpretation, and backlighting issues
I found a LG 42" 1080P for 800 and havent looked back.
Best TV for the price ive ever owned.
Samsungs are nice if you go the higher end too,k but fuck the Sharp.
-
My Aquos has no sound after yhe 12mo manufacturer warranty expired. :-X I use my surround sound from my DVD player to hear the audio.
-
Ya the salesman wa telling me that it was my signal... Ya right... FIOS smokes Comcast...
LOVE the LG... Got it out the door for 750.
VERY happy, great TV
-
Newegg/Walmart had some good deal on Bravias.
But...what you REALLY need is:

Nuts seeing "black" actually looking "black."
Unfortunately, this is the last year Kuros will be made, and they're out of your price range.

I also recommend an LG. Have had my 37" for awhile and for the price and quality can't beat it. And yes Comcast blows nuts.

I got my 50" LG plasma like 2+ years ago and loved it since. Paid $750 for it through nog Jorsher. It goes off if it gets too hot, but can cut right back on with no problems. I can crank the ac down to 68 and turn the tv on in my room and an hour later have sweaty nut drips it gets so hot.
-
I can vouch for LG.
None of the.... 60-80-100+ ? refurbished displays/monitors I got from them in the past have ever failed, that I know of.
-
I got a cheapo 32in 720p insignia flat screen for $200 bucks :noel: well worth it, but its definately far from top of the line name brand tv's.
-
Ive had my 52" Bravia XBR5 for 1.5 years, it rocks, ive had no issues and my laptop through hdmi looks amazing.
Blu-Ray rocks too.
-
42" and 50" Panasonic. Both were/are great. Anyone figure out the average life span on a plasma?
-
LED is whats the new thing now for TVs, but the LCDs prices keep dropping.
-
If you like to watch fast sport like hockey or even football, go with the 120hz, it makes a lot of difference!
-
i have a Samsung 50" plasma and i love it. display is awesome, compared to a bud's Vizio its much better.
got it for just over a grand, so all in all not a bad deal
-
The Kuros are bad ass but I don't want to spend that kind of money. JD thats a good point about the reviews, The Sony gets pretty good reviews also, and is on sale from 1500 but a lot of times that is a bogus thing. The LG is a bit more than I want to spend at 1400. I've heard good and bad about sharp, its between that and the sony for watching Lela Star. Any one know a better place to buy than best buy?

Or buy a plasma....
Seriously, most people believe that 60vs120 is a marketing ploy. I'm sure there are some advantages to 120hz but I don't think its enough to warrant the price.
What do you want to use the TV for? Games, movies, TV, Sports, computer? If you plan to do a lot of computing, I'd stay away from plasmas. Burn in doesn't really exist anymore, but there is image memory still. Not to mention a lot of plasma screens use rectangular pixels which work funny with computers. Otherwise, I fully suggest plasmas for general TV watching. Best contrast ratios, no response time, best color representation, cheaper per inch. LCDs are great, but response time is for faggots. 2ms response time LCDs are costly and that is really the only time motion blur starts to become unnoticeable. 5ms+ you will notice blur when watching sports or playing games.

I'm thinking about getting a plasma, we just got the verizon fios deal, but we still have a 20'' TV. I had bought the 42" panasonic 1080p , but Best Buy screwed up the delivery, and I wasn't going to get it for a month so I said screw them. There is a place near where I live called Micro Center they usually have good deals, I'm going to check them out when I get back from break.
-
Yeah I thought LCD was the new way to go, but in the store, the plasmas almost looked better to me. I think the only thing that I can actually see a difference in is the contrast ratio and I know that plasmas are better for that.
-
Honestly, buying a TV is funny. The best way to approach buying a TV is the same way you approach buying a car. Find 3-4 models that have solid reviews that people like. Then go in person and pick which one you like best. I'd sit on slickdeals for a few weeks and find a deal though. Even waiting just a week for a Hot Deal can save you a good bit of money.
-
Dude thanks for the slick deals link, the sony that I saw for 1175 down from 1500 is 1000 there sweet.
-
LED is whats the new thing now for TVs, but the LCDs prices keep dropping.
LED is LCD, it just uses LEDs for lighting instead of a CFL. Benefit? Dynamic contrast on LCD works by adjusting the brightness of the CFL panel...which adjusts the brightness of the entire screen (and allows fake-ass contrast ratios). LED allows a more "local" dimming, so looks much better overall. Also, less power, if you care about those things.
Also, LED isn't "the new thing for TVs." It's a nicer technology, but look up LaserVue, FED, SED, and OLED for the "new thing" in TVs.
42" and 50" Panasonic. Both were/are great. Anyone figure out the average life span on a plasma?
Life span DOES NOT FUCKING MATTER. I always laugh when someone says "LCDS last longer than PLASMAS." Yes, they do, BUT, most shit has an average lifespan of over 100,000 hours, and is probably significantly higher nowadays. 100,000 hours = 4,167 days = 11 years of STRAIGHT USE. Nobody leaves their TV on that long, and nobody keeps the same damn TV for 10 years AND uses it that long. FUCK lifespan ratings. It's more "bigger number!" marketing.
ANYTHING ABOVE 60HZ IS A MOTHERFUCKING MARKETING PLOY, DUMBASSES
Movies are filmed at 24/1.001 (~23.97) frames per second. SD content is at ~60 frames per second, because it's telecined (3 progressive, 2 interlaced) from the original 23.97FPS. THERE IS NO FUCKING REASON FOR 120-240HZ. I'm sure in the future we will one day have videos at higher frame rates, but if the source is ~24FPS, you aren't going to see any benefit to having a display running 120-240hz.
Do you know how a 240hz TV was demoed? They created a cluster of four Playstation 3s all running Gran Turismo. They *slightly* offset the frames on each one since they each run the game 60FPS, so when combined, they had a true 240FPS. People said it looked as smooth as real life...but the fact is -- you aren't going to watch a movie and say OMG THIS 240HZ MAKES THIS MOVIE SO MUCH SMOOTHER. TVs aren't smart enough to magically create new frames and smooth the picture.
-
Also tv life, is actually half life. So lets say a plasma is rated @ 100,000hrs, at that point the tv will be half as bright as it was new. So you will probably get more like 25 years of straight tv on time before it gets to the point of unwatchable.

LCD is gay. I didn't really have a budget in mind when I went shopping, I bought the best tv I could find readily available. 60" Kuro won hands down.

Fuck yeah that is what I grew up watching, with one of those two button remotes that made a loud click when you pushed them.
-
You fucking ballers. Our first TV (after my dad died and we lost... everything) was a 12" black and white Goldstar when I was 9. Your two button click remote people make me sick.

I wasn't even born yet when you were 9 :P We didn't get that tv till I was 6 or 7, Hell you probably had moved out by that point.
