Ok i know most of you guys on here are import guys but i know there are a few domestic guys around. I am getting ready to rebuild a holley 4160 for my 89 Camaro rs. The car currently has a qjet on it that seems to dump more gas on top of the motor then of in it lol. I bought a used 4160 (list #3367) and a rebuild kit for it. I plan to run it on a summit racing stage 1 intake. The motor in the car is a goodwrench 350 260/290hp backed by a thm350. The rear I think is a open 3.73 unit. My question is when should i start as far as jets and such go? I am new to tuning a holley but want to learn. the carb was originally for a 375hp 327 and it has #65 jets and a #85 power valve. Is this a good place to start? Any tips or things to look out for when i go to rebuild it?

Here is a good quick and dirty way to get it close:

Off the top of my head I would guess you are a little big on the primary jets, and way big on the secondaries. In your motor I wouldn't be surprised if the secondaries ended up being the same or almost the same size as the primaries. the power valve, and accelerator pump will be once everything else is set.
-
there is no secondaries this carb has a secondary plate not a block. If need be i guess i can buy the 4160 to 4150 conversion kit. I also have a big 4150 here but it is way to big for right now. i was thinking of using it when i turbo the car later on. It is a 750 or so. This 4160 im building is only a 575.
-
Regardless it should run, as is, it will just take a little tinkering to get it to run well.
-
No idea what my idle vac is. My rebuild kit came with a 8.5 valve so ill use that for now. From my understanding a 4160 has a sec plate and a 4150 has a second block. I have one of each sitting here they are both square bore. Floats on the carb im rebuilding are side hung. Ill get some pics in the morning when i start the rebuild. I would do it now but i dont have any carb cleaner and i dont feel like going to walmart to get any lol. I have read some howtos and such and im pretty sure i can get the carb torn down and back together. the only bad thing is i have to change the intake on the car and if the carb ends up not working out i might have to change it back. Guess i could always try it on the mustang first before swapping manis on the camaro :/

BTW, nothing wrong with a QuadraSlut in the hands of a skilled tuner.
It WILL have better idle and part throttle response than any Holley 4150/4160, and get better mileage to boot!
BTW, center hung or side hung?

i don't see your grew up on v8 OG comments adding to any of this
There is plenty of info out there where to start, like maybe find the suggested off the shelf Holley unit and replicate the jet/plate/cam/power valve it has in it.
Better yet, how about running some plugs?????
Fun thing will be the fuel pressure......which will effect everything. Likely the cause of the Quadraslut pissing fuel everywhere, blowing the needle off the seat.
-
in my case im pretty sure its the 5 years of siting that caused the qjet to leak everywhere as the car has a mech pump so i doubt its too much pressure. I probably could take the qjet apart and rebuild it like the holley but qjets are alot more complicated than the holly. That and every time i have tried to fix a qjet i make things worse. If the holly gives me issues I may just steal the edelbrock from our mustang and use it instead lol. I am sure that once I know what to change and which way i can get the car to run right. If not Ill piece together a tpi setup and use megasquirt to tune with a laptop. BTW for the second time they are side hung floats. if it matters i have a set of center hung ones too but i dont think they will work on this carb.

Ok I got the carb rebuilt. The hardest part was getting all the old gasket shit off. Its weird having all these left over shit from the rebuild kit though :X Id post a pic but my camera isnt playing nice with windows 7 for whatever reason. I have a errand to run then im going to slap the carb on my mustang and see if it works ok before i go through the bother to changing the intake on the camaro.
Edit: I got the camera working.

Quick question: The big vacuum nipple on the side of the carb is that only for the pcv OR can hook my brake booster line up there? The reason I ask is im pretty sure chevys didnt have pcv in '67 they had the old style intakes with the oil fil in them still.
-
Ya i have one of those gay ford carbs I used it for parts to build my good one. that seems to me to be all they are good for lol.
-
Got the carb and intake on. It leaks gas like a sive but seems to work ok. I got to pull it off again and tighten up the accelerator put housing again. Here are some better pics. Excuse the mess this is more or less a mock up. I have a lot of cleaning, re-wiring and de nigger rigging to do.

Dont know if im going to keep this carb on there or not it likes to leak gas out of every seam lol. I got most of the leaks stopped but the car ran out of gas so i quit for the day. I gotta get the damn gas gauge fixed one of these days haha. If I have too much trouble with the holly I am thinking about doing a j/y tbi or tpi setup with megasquirt
-
Found out where most of my gas leak was coming from. The little o-ring on the cross over tube got torn when i put the carb back together. Guess ill fix that and then try to see where else its leaking lol. Haven t gotten a chance to drive the car yet but it sounds good sitting and reving it in the driveway. I still need to set the timing but my timing light is being a bitch and dosent want to work on this car for whatever reason. It works fine on the mustang and my honda but it wont light up on the camaro.
-
Holley carbs suck bigger dick then pam anderson. Buy a Demon or Edelbrock and call it a day
-
Lol ya these carbs are easy as hell to rebuild.I tried to fix the q-jet that was on the car but gave up once i got it apart too complicated. Once i get the damn thing to stop leaking it will be fine. I have a mustang here with an eldelbroke on it and it sucks dick. Im just going to get a new set of orings or the new style tube and once i have a bit more money ill get a set of center hung bowls and the 4150 conversion kit.
-
I have a vac secondary 4160 laying around I dont need.... dual feed center hung... No choke (raped the electric choke off it for the other carb)
