Title: Thoughts on my blow up...
Post by: hamburgler on June 28, 2009, 01:36:29 PM
After 3.5 years with this motor she finally popped.  It had been tuned for 10psi on pump gas and I ran consistant 12.02 - 12.20 previous years.  I finally decided to to go click-click stopping at 20psi on 75/25 (C16/91 Shell).  On the 3rd pass last night I took out a sleeve.  I was making 462whp on the Mustang dyno and 352 wtq.  B18b bottom, b16 head.

Attached are some pics.  I ran 11.7-12.0 AFR and about 15* timing in Vtec to redline at 20psi.  I think it was just prolonged stress.  The block had a 0.020" overbore, Aries 8.5:1 pistons, Eagle rods and the sad part...  full skunk2 head.  Sad day.

I think stock sleeves suck sometimes.  It's a roll of the dice, most have very good luck.

Pics of head Ill post later.  I'm out of town right now.  The burn looks good IMO.  No block guard...  wonder if that would have helped.

Burn does look good.  Block guards help nothing.

You don't think a block guard would have helped in this situation?  IMO, if the sleeves would have been pinned at the top (and obviously bottom) the maximum stress would have been exerted at the middle of the sleeve.  And at the middle there wouldn't have been as much flex (due to top not moving) which might have reduced the strain within the sleeve causing it not to crack.  That's just how I'm thinking about it.  But that's just my first thoughts.  I have no idea.  I've heard from lots of people that block guard are no good but I don't really know why.

Was I running to much ign timing at 20psi?  (75/25 - C16/premium)

the cylinder doesn't move at the top, if it did the headgasket would not seal.

It had to move or else it wouldn't have cracked, no?  Whats your best guess as to what happened?  I really don't think I was getting any detonation.

Damn Hondas and not being able to supports 4x their design HP.

It moved all right, after it cracked.

Most of the people going for big power builds do it off of a fresh engine.  I think there's a certain amount of fatigue that takes place over a long period of time at a significant but lesser power level.

BTW, do me a favor and don't throw that block away.  It's a perfect candidate for sleeving, you damn riceboys throw them away when they still have use + we are running out.
