Title: mr2 exhaust
Post by: weirtech on July 09, 2009, 09:58:23 PM
i don't normally do full exhaust systems since i don't have a lift, but doing one of these is a bit easier.

I have been doing some fab on my friends MR2.  They are a royal pain in the ass in my mind.  Solid work though.  I like it!

the mr2 isnt to bad to work on, i have a 91 and its no worse tha working on a civic other than having to lean over the trunk to work on the engine. good job as always on the exhaust.

The pics look like one of the newer spyders.

I doubt there is much in common with your '91.

mr2s are easy

i've got another mk1 mr2 customer who just dropped off a 2009 renesis motor he wants mated up to his tranny.  he obviously didn't think it through before he bought the motor... the starter mounts on the engine side which basically makes it impossible to make an adapter without modifying the bell housing and putting a different starter on it.  pain in the ass.  i think it'd be easier to put an mk2 tranny in it since the starter is on the tranny.  guys have been doing the 3sgte swap for a while now on the mk1's.

The w52 tranny has 2 starter bosses if I remember right, one front, 1 rear.

Anyways I needed the rear location for my 20v luckily, I already had the trans before I did my swap

s retarded. send that shit back and put a toyota 3.0L v6 on it and turbo it on the way in. itll get better gas mileage and itll take the 3s-gte an extra 100hp (more if theyve swapped to a larger turbo) just to keep up.
wont say anything about a renesis swap, but its lack of powerband and spooing ability the same would likely be true for the i4's.
you show up with a stock engine 450hp and those i4's better be packing 600+ to even up.

Renesis, as in the RX8 motor?  The one that all the rotory guys grubbing together 20 year old 13B rebuilds call junk?

I'm sure it'll look crazy cool and run very well in such a light car, but that's an engine you want to live with IMO.

Tig all the way around the emblem

Not worth the added time investment, but I do agree it would have looked better on the muffler.

It would consume some time, but should look sweet

welding around the whole emblem would be very difficult to do since it is so small and not a square like the full race tags.

the muffler already has "magnaflow" stamped into it.  i didn't make the muffler, so the tag goes on part of the exhaust that is visible.  if the customer didn't want that, they'd get their exaust done some place that doesn't give a shit about the work they do.

Projection welding would look the nicest. Personally not a fan of tagging work though, doesn't look clean IMO.
