Title: Fixed my broken manifold
Post by: patsmx5 on July 15, 2009, 11:13:16 PM
So over christmas I turbo'd the car. I couldn't find anyone who could weld the wastegate pipe on to the manifold (steel to cast iron), so I ended up having it brazed on. Yeah....... I added a bolt on brace from the WG to the manifold to keep vibration down. Six months later, I start the car one day and it had completely cracked/broken away from the manifold.  :(  **miracle it lasted this long**

I went ahead and changed the old 1.5" tubing for a piece of shedule 40 pipe, 0.139 thick vs. like .020... And made four braces to steady the pipe and keep vibration down, and offer support so that the weld from the pipe to the manifold isn't having to carry all the load.

Before:

Then it broke:

Now:

I'll have more pics later. My camera is being retarded. I took like 20 pics, and they're all viewable from the camera, but it would only upload three. No idea. I'm upgrading the software so maybe that will fix it. But got this welded up for 30 bucks.  :noel:

Thanks. Hope it works well. Got the turbine, manifold, and DP all cleaned up and painted it all black. Looks better. Hope all the paint doesn't fall off. Gonna put it all back on tomorrow.

Camera is a POS. I can see all the pics, and I even FINALLY got them to upload, but now I can't get photobucket to see them. I'll try to take some pics of everything painted and see if I can get them up. Got my inspiration from the rolling stones.  :noel:

sand it down or strip the rust with a wirebrush, wipe clean with a rag. paint it flat black with some high temp engine paint or bbQ grill paint do a few coats, lay it on thick. Toss in the oven to bake for a few hours and that bitch aint coming off.

that brace looks good.

Thanks for typing out what I did so I won't have to.  O0 Just haven't baked it yet, gonna do that on the car per the instructions, but if I could I'd do it in the oven.

Thanks.  :noel:

Yeah, it looks like shit, but it works fine. Half of that shit is the old wiring that's in place so the stock ECU will run the alternator.  :?: Need to build some fancy circuit to run the alternator and then do away with the OEM shit and rewire my stuff.

I'm guessing a GT32? Not many Garrett's have a 6-bolt DP.

So far it looks good. What's it do for power? Low 300's?

Yeah, gt3271. Still working fine. It's around 270-300whp. I need a cutout and larger injectors. (and a drivetrain to take the power....)
