What a lot of people don't seem to understand is that electric cars only offset the carbon footprint.  Instead of producing CO and NOx from the vehicle, they'll just be produced by powerplants due to the increased demand for electricity.  There's no such thing as a free lunch and electricity has to come from somewhere.  And like danwjmu said, what happens to the batteries when they die?  They won't live forever...

Plus the fact that electric cars are for Faggots.

Believe it or not, some locations have advanced past the stage of burning shit for electricity.  TVA draws quite a bit of power from nuke plants and hydro dams.  Our city is powered by nuke and water...

Also, people would typically be charging their cars at night.  Power plants can't exactly be "switched off" at night when power consumption is lower, so a lot of power is generated that isn't used.

I'm not implying that electric cars are great and will solve the world's problems, but they're a step closer than continuing to use fuel-powered cars, and some of the arguments against them are not that strong.

I read some article that a think tank in Germany did a study and found that (in Germany at least) a 2/3rd population of electric cars on their current grid and capacity would only reduce their emissions by 6%.

But like Jorsher said we got nuke and hyrdo power so yeah.

People need to stop being afraid of Nuclear power.

It's kinda fucking us because all of our plants are from the 70's and should be updated, but people are too afraid of Chernobyl happening to them.

I am insulted that they'd compare our technology to that of impoverished commies from more than two decades ago.

amen

nuclear power only goes wrong when people fuck up.  see three mile and chernobyl.  it's a shame the us hasn't built a new one since the 70.  archaic  laws need to go

They recently repaired one of the reactors we get our power from and tried to bring it back online sometime earlier this year or late last year.  Anyway, there were some "problems" and the damn thing shut off before the workers even knew there was a problem.

If one minute "problem" occurs on these things, they shut themselves off.  Then the engineers have to spend days trying to track down what was the cause before they can start them back up.  Not sure if they actually got it up and running again, but people need to quit being pussies.

I'm curious how people will react when nuclear fusion power plants move past "experimental" and become the norm.

I imagine that behind every big industry there is a proportionately small number of lobbyists fucking shit up for everyone.

Coal still is big business, not to mention old business.

so ive been told, when you graduate from UW madison with a degree in nuclear engineering the head guy shakes your hand and tells you to never shut off the emergency cooling. for those that dont know thats what caused 3 mi.

lol dumbasses shut off the cooling.

Our nuke plant actually caught fire years and years ago, but didn't blow up ;)  Nearly did, though.

Good stuff.

Says cost $1.8 billion to restart one of the reactors and will pay for itself in 5 years.  :o
