Title: How likely is this a head gasket issue?

03 Civic EX

temp rises up and down.  Goes to the red and then drops back down after a while. 

not the thermostat, just changed.

Fans kick in fine.

Flushed and fluids filled to appropriate levels, after drivig about an hour or so, coolant tank gets filled with coolant  :-X

I really don't wanna do a headgasket on this s.o.b.

Any cheap easy alternatives?

Compression test the motor



Do a quick rig job and  set the fan up to 12 volt power all the time. If it doesnt overheat with the fan on all the time it wont be a headgasket



blown Headgaskets will overheat no matter how much air you throw at them


Oh yeah bad theromstat grounds will tweak with temp readings atleast the 0bd2 and older cars did.

If the resevoir is filling is it a bad rad cap?

Possible.  Ive done about 3 or 4 of these at work.  A few from bad fan switches and people driving the piss out of them overheating. 

Do a leakdown test.

I had a hell of an air bubble once... sounds just like the problem you're having.  However, draining/filling completely should have fixed it.

Try parking it on an incline so the cap is the highest point and run it with the cap off.  I had to do a few heat cycles before the air got out.  However, if it really is a HG, that won't do any good  :P

this one I've seen.  Not to be confused with backwards.  The little bubble valve needs to be at the top to let air through it.
