Title: When ordering piping to build a manifold with a MIG
Post by: 98vtec on August 17, 2009, 07:17:33 PM
What gauge steel do you guys recommend using?  I'm making one like a mini me so the structure of it should be pretty sturdy as it is, i just dont want to get the piping here and the it be heavier than what is necessary.

Also, i'm looking at all these places and they have all sorts of different radius' to buy but the rest of the sizes are the same.  Why would one choose to run a smaller radius over something with a longer radius?

I was told by a member here that i would need five 90* bends and about a foot of straight in order to make the mini me, however, those are not the only dimensions i have to choose from in most of the catalogs i am looking at.

any help would be appreciated  :)

You will need more than a foot just to make a collector. I would also use pipe to make it with a mig. Schedule 10 standard radius will work fine.

i was considering buying a collector premade.  We are kind of on a time budget.  What is the "standard" radius if you dont mind me asking?

sorry im a noob, shut the fuck up.

holy crap that is cheap!!

now just to decide if i want to run 2" or 1.5" manifold runners

might want to measure the outlet of the head flange before you make that decision...

there is absolutley no need to use 2" runners on ANY honda. 1.5" sch 10 is more then sufficient. its a true 1.5" ID unlike tubing that is 1.5" OD

how do you figure you will need more then a foot to make a 3" collector? and that is the longest collector that should be used to make a mini-ram manifold.

go to ace stainless and order your bends. 1.5" sch is standard.

if you need a collector i have one sitting on my shelf i can ship out. lmk

1.5" sch10 is actually ~1.6ID, 1.9OD. It's more than thick enough, sch40 is a bit too thick actually. As far as stainless, it's actually cheaper because of cut-throat sellers like Ace. I think you can mig it w/o having to use special wire, it's the tri-gas that's almost required that is the issue IIRC.

Elf/minime = 6 ells, 1-2' straight, 1 ell for WG (has 4-1 collector)
splog = 5 ells, 1ell for WG (has 2-1 collector using ells)
Ramhorn = 13 ells, 2-3' straight, 1 ell for WG (I like an ell rather than straight)
NogaLog = 2 ells, 2 tees OR 2' straight, 1 ell for WG, some plate to get to flange OR super-thick flange milled to pipe radius

If you're shitty sch-10, if you're good at mig sch-10.
Use stainless wire and regular Argon/C02, understanding that you really need to 1-pass everything. Tri-mix is expencive and useless in our case if you can 1-pass.

thats right, brain fart. its 1.625 - 1 5/8. for some reason i was remembering it as 1.5" ID and 1.625 OD which doesnt make sense because its .109 wall.

Mine start out as 3.5 and I cut them down after splaying them.

I dont think he does. I know he sells stainless brake lines and fittings and shit but when i went there he didnt have any flanges.

Forget to type something?

PM weirtech for flanges, and he may still have the elbows you want. Even from Canadia his shipping speed & prices are decent.
