Title: Selling my shit box. what should I get?
Post by: marcj on September 06, 2009, 12:57:09 PM
I recently had my first kid, so instead of being a broke college student, I've opted to go into the Air Force and make a career out of it. My debt is around $3,000 and needs to be paid off before I can get a security clearance for my job, so I'm forced to sell my beloved holset powered coupe (it's not like it would pass emissions where I get stationed any way).

So, after boot-camp and tech school I should have around $25,000 saved up. What kind of car should I get in the $5,000 range. It needs to be quality and capable of handling some boost without forged internals. I'm thinking a 240sx.. can't think of many other options.  what do you suggest?

Yeap, 94+ are 1.8's, 99-00 have the best head on them, 250whp/250wtq is pretty common on stock motors. There's kits that put you at 250-260, some go higher on stock motors. I'm around 300whp/wtq, still stock engine.

looking for something with a bit more torque than another honda, hence a 240sx or EVO is on my list, however, an EVO isn't in my set price range.

Also why in the world do you have to clear your debt to have security clearance.

My dad  is retired air force and has been an electrical engineer for the DOD Navy ever since, government employee since the early 70's. The guy worked on nuclear subs during the cold war and he had debt like the rest of americans.

So to have a job with the government you cant have a credit card? What about student loans everyone under 35 has now?

It's basically a new thing with the military to require debt free recruits. The way the recruiter explained it is; If you're going for a job that involves any classified documents, like peoples information (SS#, address), you could use them for identity theft, or if it's military information, you could sell it on the black market, etc.

I don't want to be limited to shitty jobs because I have debt, or even denied since the USAF is picky any way.

I want a mid to late 70's 260 or 280z.  Sex on wheels.  With a later model engine swap plus turbo of course.  Maybe just a 300zx tt swap?

your recruiter is full of shit. I was in charge of every person in my units security clearance for about a year. Debt is no big deal AS LONG AS ITS MANAGED. If you have outstanding collections on your credit, get that shit cleared up, and get it in writing that its cleared and submit it with your clearance package. A 3k car loan is no big deal. Make sure you have it set up for someone to make your payments while in scout camp, er I mean air force boot camp.

and anyone who is going into boot camp and claims they can save 25k while in boot camp/school is full of shit. I would for sure not count on 25k at the end of school.

You give out your ss# to 19 year old kids who do records at college,I mean come on. Im going to agree with JYR on this 3k in debt is way below what most people carry I mean most people have debt in the form of

car loans=20k
credit cards=5k typical
school loans=20k+

These are just the way life is today. If the government wants people who are debt free and can afford to buy cars cash, afford school without loans and no credit cards then there is no reason for them to join something that pays shit, you get sent all over the world and you spend months away from family.

The people with college degrees who carry no debt are from wealthy families that would never let their children join. The military has been and always will be lower middle class and minorities so them throwing in the idea that these people have no debt sounds like bullshit too me.

Also the air force cant be that picky I have 2 friends who are officers who couldnt do an engine swaps without fucking them up. Almost 30 percent of americans carry a college degree it not that special.

Also, your SSN is going to be throw around so much, you will begin to recite that shit when someone asks for your phone number. I almost promise you that. You want to rent a video on base, whats your SSN. you wanna cash a check on base, whats your SSN. You need to piss in a cup for the weekly piss test, whats your SSN.

You will be denied a job because you are an idiot before you are denied a job because of your clearance. Anyone can get a "intern clearance" with the approval of the unit commander and a simple letter typed up.

dammit JD.. i'm not bragging about making a military income, which is low middle class at best. I've made almost twice that a year managing my own advertising organization on the web. All that stuff went belly up with the economy, and now that I have a family, __________. fill in the blank aka sob story

I will go speak with a different recruiter, but the two or three friends I've had go into the military said they had to clean up their negative credit when they enlisted as well. I'm SURE the Army would bend a lot on credit. Hell they are the only branch I know of still REALLY working to recruit. The rest don't really care and are never anywhere but their tiny 2 desk office.

CRX... $45k a year doesn't go very far.

depends on what you do with it.  I make at the most around $15k a year, and get by pretty comfortably.  Its frustrating sometimes to not have more money to be a little more free with it, but if budget and live like you made 15k, making 45k would feel like being fil,hy rich.  The problem for most people is that when the start making more, they automatically start spending more.  On everything.  I'd be filthy fucking rich if I made that much a year.

exactly.. keep flipping your money, don't pick up more bills. I've only had to really work a job 1 year of my life because I got sued for a street racing accident when i was in my early 20's. underage girls parents stuck it to me.

other than that I've always lived nicely off a small budget. never sold anything illegal either :)

but you still have to smog it to bring it on base, regardless of where its registered.

my sister is stationed at Miramar, and one of my best friends at Pendleton...both had to be smogged with Texas and WA plates
