Ok so about 2 weeks the wife tells me the her cars acting funny and the engine is alot louder then before but no check engine light? I said Ild look at it as soon as I have time and i finally had time this weekend. First off, ride is a 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8s automatic. Car turns on and idles fine and for the first minute on the road it seems to drive normal until you get to about 20mph. Engine starts getting loud as a mother fucker likes its giving it all its got but its barely moving. It strugles to go 35 and can only do 20 uphill. Its drivable as long as you feather in the throttle but if you mash in or go WOT it starts to bog... car seems to die then jumps back into it... then dies... then comes back to about 3,xxxrpms. As soon as you let off the throttle it runs fine again. I parked the car at home to check it out and when you rev it in idle, the engine is loud as fuck now. Not so much the engine but the intake growls like a motha now? Im also hearing a ticking from aroung the fuel rail? So I pushed the fuck out of the car last night on WOT and finally a CEL popped up. Just took it to vatozone to get it scanned and it came back as a malfunction w/ the 1st gear in the trans. WTF? Im guessing this was from me pushing it last night and I know this has to be an engine prob but what? Bad coil, injector, plug? I buy a reliable new car I dont fuck w/ and I get this shit. Damn it. any hewp? Thanx for reading. :-[

Those POS's have cat. converter issues what will destroy the engine if not caught in time... Possibly the cat is clogged
Remove the upstream o2 and continue your testing...
-
Mother fucker... I hope not. Just checked for recalls and found nothing related.
-
Ive replaced 3 so far...
-
Sounds like a clogged cat to me. Just take off the exhaust and go for a quick ripper and see if it still dose it.
-
How many Miles on it?
I think the dealer is obligated till 8 years 80k now for emissions related repairs
-
cat is in the manifold take out the upstream o2
-
bummer, car has 130,xxx miles on it... Out of states trips to family. It would make sense but why no related CEL?
-
clogged cats are hit or miss, when they degrade in efficency and still flow well they will throw the code
-
problem solved lol... (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-2005-NISSAN-SENTRA-1-8L-HEADER-2001-2002-2003-2004_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem1e58354083QQitemZ130328903811QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories)

Well I just posted up on justanswer.com and heres what I got from a Nissan tech on there...

Hello and thank you for using JustAnswer.com
I would look into a Mass Air Flow sensor. This sensor is known to cause drive ability issues and never turn on the Service Engine Soon light, cause it doesn't fail, it just meters air improperly. I would have the air and fuel mixture checked. If out of spec, then I would have the MAF sensor replaced. I would replace it with a factory one, not a after market. After markets never seem to work on Nissan's.
I would also inspect the air duct to the throttle chamber. Make sure that is secured properly.
-
unplug the maf and see if the problem persists. if it does, and i predict it will, continue looking into a new cat.
-
EDIT
unplug the maf and see if the problem persists. if it does, and i predict it will, continue looking into new JDM yo OBX racing headers.

I havent seen any of the AFM's fail yet on that new of a model, but I agree with factory replacement on Nissan, 3 aftermarkets later on one job...

See if the throttle cable is adjusted right so that the TPS is going closed every time when you let off the gas. Also could be a bad knock sensor.

No throttle cable, electronic ;)
-
Ah. I got a POS 98 sentra that did just what your saying and it was the TPS sensor not always coming closed, and the knock sensor connection wasn't perfect.

That was because you didn't have your MS grounded correctly.

Ok so i finally got an hour of free time to work work on the car whille the lil one was asleep. Pulled the O2 and its not caked up at all... just the norm light carbon? I did however order some MaD TyTe JDM headers on wednesday but now im thinking its not the cat only cause the O2. Car has gotten worse... now only makes it to 25 and it strugles to do so. Engine is getting even louder. Intake is most deff not clogged? Could it be the AFM/MAF? would it really cause probs like this? Engine feels like its running on just 2 cylinders and now im hearing a ping/rattle durring accel. Bad Coil? Gonna check the plugs later tonight if I get I have time. To late to call autozone... do/can the test/check coils. Fuckers are pricey even used. Dont wanna buy anything I dont need. Fuckin NisAnd because I'm an intellectual being, !
-
The engine is getting louder as in it's revving higher? Is there a tach on that thing? Torque converter lockup solenoid if that's the case.
-
"And because I'm an intellectual being" WTF is this about?
-
its te area just to the left of your wifes smashed anus

-
First person to solve the Prob is getting $10 via Paypal.
-
Since $10 is eclipsed by the time it takes to drive to you, no.
-
Well this is why mechanics charge alot to fix a car
You need to do basics like
check fuel pressure
spark on all 4 cylinders
spark plugs
fix any check engine light that comes up
-
you still havent ripped with the upstream O2 out have you?
-
Looks like everyone has told you cat, have you done anything about that yet? :?:
-
he said he already took it off and looked at the cat.
reading is cool
-
See my previous post about torque converter solenoid, worth a shot.
-
TORQUE CONVERTER SOLENOID HAHAHQ HAD F20B THROW CODE FOR THATW AS THREE WIRE MAIN COUNTER SHAFT SENSOR NOT TWO.
FUCK!!!
Okay, not my best widebuddy impression, but he is a hard act to follow.
-
That was pretty damn good, actually.
-
I succeed in failling I guess.
FYI, I think I'll be the first to successfully do a F20B automatic swap in an OBD2 car and not convert the car to OBD1 or manual trans.
-
If the cat is the problem Ill buy it ;D
-
mass air flow sensor!!!!!! if your cat was bad or clogged it would start glowing bright red and become super fukin hot from the fuel dumping in there. and or try a tps i work next door to 2 junkyards if you neeed a qoute on parts and shipping p.m. me for any of those sensors i got DEALS
-
maf sensor
fuel pressure
timing belt.chain jump?
iv also seen a nissan go high voltage output on the alt and cause all this.
try checking the dcv
-
The Cat will make the engine NOISY
-
Finally got a couple hours to work on the car this sunday. Might have found the prob... Uploading some pics now.... ;)
-
pix?
-
So turns out it wasnt a cat problem, it was a squirl situation. Took the car out for a spin to get the engine warm and when I popped the hood the fucker was chilling under the intake arm and scared the fuck out of me. He was trying to keep out of the hail storm we had just had.

Swung by autozone and picked up some new plugs and seafoam. Pulled the plugs and they were ashy as fuck, obviously from running hot but from what? Coils are all kosher by the way and every injector is getting fuel. Maybe it is timing? Well Headers come in tomorrow and AFM on thursday. Taking it to AMCO on friday for a free trans check up. Hope it makes it there. Cars only doing 30 mph now on flat roads and 15 up hill.
-
Ashy isn't hot. Ashy is oil.
-
AAMCO All Automatics Must Come Out
-
so, if the squirell had not made a home in your car untill recently when it hailed, why do you think it will fix a long term problem?
-
Timing, I doubt, they rarely jump, usuall make a hell of a chain noise before it happens
-
Ashy isn't hot. Ashy is oil.
White ash... compared to the pics in the back of Chiltons. Says running hot?

Hot is bare ceramic, no timing mark on the ground strap, top of the well discolored/rainbowed with really bad cases the first couple threads are discolored/rainbowed.
