Its ironic you bring that up because they called me today.
Its what wasnt ordered, even though i've been on their ass to get everything ordered since last wednesday. Shit comes next day from where its ordered from. He says he thought he had what he needed, even though he was saying he needed to check and see what he had.

kinda, i just need to out the head back on it, throw it back on the dyno, and get out there to get some seat time on the DR's.
What makes me really mad is that its a person i consider a good friend, and he blew me off, and then replys with "your just gonna go and blow your shit up anyways" then starts ragging on hondas about how the're cobbled up from zip ties and duct tape.

You're too nice, and that's a bridge you should burn.

yeah, I just had my first experience with a shop and learned a lesson or two :P
4 months
$890
I'll have to find the work order...but this is what I remember from it:
- cylinder bore/hone
- tanked block/head
- disassemble block/head (removed pistons/crank/rods, valves/springs/retainers)
- balance rotating assembly
- resurface flywheel
- work valve seats
- reassemble head/block (pistons/crank/rods, valves/springs/retainers)
- deck head/block
- main bore
Everything looks tits and whenever I spoke with them they seemed to know what the hell they were talking about (asked about vtec conversion, knew the differences between vtec/nonvtec oil pump, etc) despite their shop being full of larger-than-four-cylinder engines.

well it looks like the machinist actually pulle through and the head is done!
i think he's going to pull an all nighter and get the slut back together knowing him and his nocturnal ways..
Tom... YW

if you can't build a 4 banger in 6 hours or less with all the parts already laid out, then something is wrong

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Throw together a motor that will run for 10K miles and build an engine correctly are two differnt things. It will take more than 6 hours. Sounds like they did a good bit. Good machinist that build engines are hard to come by. Sounds like you got a good deal despite it taking them too long.

My machinest buddy pulled through. ;D
I've never posted a rant online before, i was LIVID though. I called him back after posting this, and he managed to make some shit work. I had dropped a valve or 2 and munched up the combustion chambers. What was missing was an intake seat. He had the bare head handed back to me about 10:30, had it reassembled by 11.
It makes me feel better, i had really felt let down. I have a TON of respect for the guy, his shops a building down from mine, so we're always borrowing each others toosl, helping each other out. Hes one of those older knowledgeable done about everything calls it like it is assholes that you either hate or love. We get along great.

thats if everythings already clearanced, cleaned ready to go. You can easily have 4 5 hours just blasting/cleaning everything.
The shortblocks back together, hopefully it'll be ready to go to the track tmw night.

Maybe, however I wasn't going to *try* after spending so much money on the parts... These people have been around for a long time and I'd rather feel confident my shit will be spec'ed exactly how I want it and not worry if my lack of experience built a solid engine :P

I thought the price you listed was very reasonable for the amount of work they did, esp if they did everything correctly.

I'm going to need it, the car was moving pretty good before this mishap, went 11.5@128 on 8.6lbs of boost. It made 885hp on 36lbs. Its a matter of working all of the kinks out of the car.

All I have to say is DG machine in auburn Wa. is the shit. 3 week turn around time in may.
1. bore 20 over, hone
2. balance/printed within .1 gram (I think thats what he said)
3. decked block
4. gaped rings
5. pressure washed everything cleaner than new
all this out the door for $300 with tax
And yes it took me about 6 hours to put it all together. I checked everything and then I rechecked everything. Layed everything out on a CLEAN tray, put it all together and torqued everything and rechecked everything again. I would work on it like an hour to and hour and a half for about 5-6 days. the ony thing I didnt do that I wish I would have done was spray the hg with copper spray.

I'm spoiled. The D16Y5 Type-R short block was cleaned, decked, bore/honed .25mm over, LS rod big ends machined to fit the D16 crank, GX pistons pressed onto said rods, different rod bearings purchased (the ones I had were wrong), and assembled for $300. The head cost me $189 or something for clean/mill/valvejob, had to buy the valve stem seals last minute from the only place in town that had them which was over half the cost.
Work took about 6 months, though. I make a habit of showing up two weeks to a month before I actually need anything and taking the guy to lunch, never mention wtf is the holdup or even talk about the motor. Seems to work pretty well.

Thats a smoken deal! :noel:
What I payed was the best in the area, but the guy knows his shit. I think the next best price for what I had done was $450+

I try to get as much I can done at the foundry's machine shop. (The foundry I work at) 0$
I have not yet had any valve seat replaced or anything like that.
Just cleaning, boreing, honeing, and decking the blocks at work. ;D

glad to see it worked out
