Title: Breaking engine in on the dyno...
Post by: accordepicenter on October 04, 2009, 11:06:59 PM
My other car is off the road and i just cant see registering it/insuring it and then just taking it off the road again for the winter after the dyno... The new motor/setup is installed, but since its going to be a high hp build and quite a bit of tuning might need to be done to the new ecu/map for this build to run correctly, Im thinking the first thing to be done is to take the car to the dyno and start breaking it in, then up the power on 93 oct/methanol, then go for broke with C16.... Reccomendations? I had originally thought of breaking it in on the street with a street tune, then hitting up the dyno shortly after, but im thinking of skipping the street session(s) due to simplicity reasons... What do you guys think?

I've broken a bunch in on the dyno, I like doing it that way.  Just don't spin it high or go past wastegate for the first couple dozen or so 2000-5000 rpm rippers, and let the engine decel in gear. It's a LOT easier than being on the street since you don't have to worry about traffic.

prolly 4th?  Do you have a rundown of runs i should do?  like, do 2000-5000rpm and back down a dozen or so times, then start revving higher or up the boost?  Its got a 9psi spring in the wastegate i think... Would it be ok to go for high hp numbers after an hour or 2 of breaking in and tuning?

I'd ask the ring manufacturer, some hardened race rings are supposed to be broken in gently... I've been through a  few where the car had to get to an event and we just broke the car in anyway, worked fine with no longevity problems.

I mostly agree.  But, talking to JE about how to finish hone and break in a motor with their rings... no.

i broke my pro seal JE rings in slow and steady and they dont seem to seal very well...

but the car hauls decent enough still.

maybe ill do a leakdown some day soon
