Title: wet sanding, what compound do i move on to?
Post by: special ed on October 11, 2009, 06:41:29 PM
just finished with the 2000 grit on my car and i tried the turtle wax swirl/scratch remover, but it wasn't strong enough.  what do i use next?

i had a rubbing compound that i used a while back that left a nasty cloud, but the turtle wax cleared it up.  i just don't remember what it was.

I don't wet sand flat black. If you're using turtle wax you should probably just quit.

sweet.  you are completely useless.  the turtle wax is what i had around.  i don't work at the dealer anymore so i have no idea what to work with because i don't have a supply of 3M materials and a buffer.

anyone else care to give some advice?

go back to 800 grit if the scratches are too deep to get out with 2000, you went to fast and didnt get the bigger scratches out with the lower grit paper.

the tutorial isnt so great, but the products are the best ever. with proper technique you can get away with just the
 3Mâ„¢ Perfect-Itâ„¢ III Extra Cut
Rubbing Compound, PN 4350

thats what i do on air show planes

If you don't have a buffer you're pretty much pissing up a rope. By the way, maby you should get a rope.

haha i miss you steve.  it's actually pretty well blended.  i have an orbital buffer, but those are useless when it comes to stuff like this.  might as well try it.

ill see what i can find here, there aren't as many products available in nova scotia.  i didn't even look to see if they had anything higher than 3000, i bet life would be easier if i could go finer.

i would use a 3M rubbing compound followed by Perfect-IT III like said above.

worked well on my car.

make sure you have a real rotary buffer or a good DA.

only use one compound per pad.

1500 is all you need if you are using a real buffer. those DA type polishers are junk for anything more than removing wax residue. harbor freight has a nice buffer on sale right now if you have those there or you could just order online

If you are looking for a real shine you would step up to 2500 grit. But since it is not a show car, you are going to need a course "cutting" compound, then a fine polish after that. The course should feel a like a gritty paste and the fine should contain aluminum oxide.

and i think that is what i had before but i didn't intend on it haha.  wish i still had it around, going to pick it up after work.

Just go to a car wash, set a fire in the bathroom, them make off with all the detail supplies during the confusion.

Shine = $0.00

i finally got around to getting an extension cord for the buffer.  i gave a shot with the fine compound on my orbital and it cleaned up well, so i am going to pick up the coarser compound and an angle buffer soon and go at it again.

should have taken a before pic, but it looks so much better even now.  i will get pics of the next project, which is a rusted chip  :?:
