I'm pretty set on getting either a Hobart Handler 140, or 187. But I cant decide if the 187 is worth the extra money. And another big issue is the fact that I dont have access to a 220v receptical, and when I move in 4 months, I will be renting a house...so, if you think I should spend the extra cash on the 187, what exactly does it take to get a 220v hookup installed (in a rental home), and what should I expect to pay?
Also, the cheapest I've found them shipped are $670 or $600 reconditioned for the 187, and $480 or $430 reconditioned for the 140. Know of it cheaper anywhere else?
Any helpful opinions are appreciated

What do you plan to weld with the welder? how heavy of steel?

I have built the whole Locost frame using my 110V lincoln welder and never had a problem. I like the 110v welder because I can move it around and use it where ever I want.
I think you would be fine for what you want.

I've been off these forums for awhile, but I had been on hmt for years....came back, and had to get a new account....then just today hear of rhmt...not really sure whats going on or what happened....

ive been using my 140 and its worked pretty good. unless your welding near a 220 outlet or have to weld big stuff alot, id go for the 140. I got the 140 and a small argon tank to keep it portable, for on-site repairs or turbo installs, works great, esp for a 120 welder.

When I build sch 40 manifolds, I max out my 180.

when i was doing the schedule 40 manifolds, i had the 140 maxxed out but it worked pretty well, even on the manifold to flange welds (1/2") but i was moving slow...

i almost bought a 140 but got a NIB 187 on CL for $550, i have pretty much no expience with a 110v mig though, but i think the 187 is probly worth the extra $ they say buy more then you need now with welders, i cant recall what but ive welded a few things that i think a 110v model might not of been able to do at least without maybe pre heating and grinding alot to make it ready for weld. manifold flanges are pretty thick too, im not sure how they rate these things but it seems they under rate them as far as what thickness they can weld, maybe its complete penatration in a single fast pass?

I have a handler 140. It does the job. I have to say using 110 is a definite advantage. It really allows you to work just about anywhere.
I'm surprised people are doing schedule 40 w/110. I'm planning on doing a schedule 10 mini-ram with mine at some point... I'll do a build thread when I get around to it.
I say get the 140. Wait 'till you're in a more permanent location to step up.

This is 1/4 inch with .030 flux core wire no gas. on the highest heat setting...

I actually like using fluxcore w/gas. Dual shield seems to work quite well outside when a gust of wind hit's ya... the slag brushes off a lot easier too for some reason.
I'll get ya some better pics later. The camera I currently have access to at work isn't high dollar in any way.
