Title: scrap metal yards
Post by: toyolla86 on October 23, 2009, 11:48:09 PM
does anyone have a scrap metal yard they hit up.

i found one right down the street from where i live on an army post.

they always throw away nice metal.

only gone there once but i got some pretty good square tubing. thin wall good and light.

and they have tons of other stuff too.

the scrap yard close to me won't give you any $ for carbon steel scrap if it bring anything less than a ton.  fuck that, it isn't worth it to drive in there and get nails in your fucking tires.  they will give you $ for alum, ss and copper though in any weight though.  i'd sooner go to the metal shop i get stuff from and pick through their scrap bin.  it is amazing what they send to the recyclers.

did i not mention that this scrap yard i go to is unattended and COMPLETELY FREE.

yes you walk in there, jump your ass in the a huge dumpster full of metal,

and start rumaging through stuff that the army is throwing away.

last time there were huge containers of .50 cal rings. (the things that hold the belt of rounds together)

Been to several, but never one that was free. Still, it's like whatever the going rate they pay for #2 steel times 2, which is sill pennies per pound. Also if I need something weird that's hard to find, like 7" round stock in aluminum, hit up local machine shops, you'd be surprised what they'll have sitting in a corner.

yeah stealing is freee. hahahaah.
naw we've asked the gate guard if its ok to just go into the yard and take metal and he says "yeah, thats what its there for"
i mean its stuff like metal roofing, kitchen SS. bathroom SS. aluminum, broken down military vehicles,
ammo cans, big thick aluminum I beams. etc etc.

went there today and got a nice table top from a kitchen that used to be a chopping block.

and a good piece of aluminum.

its the military. they throw away valuable things all the time.
they arent in the business of metal recycling. but they do as a courtesy
put it in a huge blue 30 ft long dumpster for a while before they send it
off to the dump for people to take what they want. there is usually
good metal in there.

hahaha. well unless you people are in utah an address will do you no good.

they've got a whole bunch of huge SS kitchen tables. just like the stuff we used to
have in the navy.
really good but you would need a big truck just to get one of them out.

i

if this guy was smart he would pick up all the metal everychance he gets and profet by taking it to a real scrap yard. my friend works at the scarp yard in my town so he lets me know if they get good stuff in or hes always taking wierd shit home. he got some home made shop vac the other day looks pretty cool lol. but hes always getting motor bikes and shit junked there. got a couple free/cheap welders off people too. one old school stick welder for 50$ and another worker gave him a free mig welder that just needed a new plastic tubing where it feeds the wire threw. by and by he gots a pretty easy job because hes a suprivisor and is always getting shit for free or cheap.
