can i use any 1.6 sohc crank in a y7??

As long as its got the same snout size. I am using a Z6 crank in my ZC, and Im about to use another Z6 crank in an A6.

Should only be 2 sizes. 22 or 24mm.

and im pretty sure the smaller snout was only in the 1988 motors

yes, so will the z6/a6/a1, although as stated above early '88 a6 cranks had a smaller snout and IIRC some differences in cam gears. also the 86-87 dohc motors had a smaller snout as well, while the 88-89 were the large snout. i have to do some research to make sure this is 100% correct, but i believe it is
