I realize it aint much, but for an all-bmw build hmt style, I think it's pretty cool. I've met this guy at a meet, he hammered out a bit of my bumper support with a beer bottle for IC clearance :mexi:

8 second car is he ditches the manual transmission.
-
what bmw auto tranny should he run?
-
The converted power glide type?
-
Badass. I went to that bimmer forum. The first reply was...
"My goodness that's a fantastic time!"
We should invite him over to rHMT
-
what bmw auto tranny should he run?
I'd lose the all-BMW pride thing and pick either built TH400 or a glide, depending on how much firther he wants to go power wise.
He'd also have to downgrade from streetcar to "streetable"
-
Jesus fuck!
I dig it.
-
point of the car is fastest BMW not fastest bmw shell... there is a bmw powered build in the drag section there that will go 7's but its going to have an auto afaik
-
also, the rippling door panels remind me of my friends foxbody launching on the track, the glass didnt sit right in the doors anymore, dunno if it was related but flexing body panels = srs bsns
-
This doesn't change the fact that bmw is the most over hyped auto manufacturer.
-
No, that would be Subaru with their piece of shit turbo AWD product line, followed closely after by Honda's reputation for reliability.
-
He could put a lenco or bruno in it, then it would still be a bmw, no other car "brands" in it. Like JD said it will still downgrade it from streetcar to streetable.
-
thats pretty fast but pretty slow for the fastest bmw.

Any pic's of the engine?
-
there are faster bmw's.
this is the fastest bmw with a bmw motor, tranny, rear end, etc
there are ls bimmer drag bimmers etc like every other car....

Maybe its because you are more involved in the jap cars and I am more involved in euro cars. All I hear all the time how fast and nimble bmw's are around here, they are basically an enduro.
-
sounds pretty good. car boogies.

If you moved a quarter mile from your current shop space I'm sure that little bubble of unreality would no longer intrude.
I like the OBD1 E34/E46 stuff, I'd own one.

I can't stand these things , even my auto pulls on most of 3 series here. but every Americans who owned them thinks they are great, second slowest cars at the track behind the stock mustang GT's, and the chevy cobalts. that is the fastest one I've seen. I am probably missing something here, they probably make bmw for the US different than the ones for Germany, because all the ones here are slow. m3 m5 ok fast, but still get spanked.

Lol, no. I am involved with diesel trucks more than I am with euro cars. No one gives a fuck about scubis around here. We have tons of JDM RHD cars here, people just buy skylines and aristo's.
-
pretty badass, but still a pos electrical mess. bmw, vw, benz all have mad electical problems, and vw's just catch on fire all the time.

Truth. I took a one mile walk downtown last week and I saw at least 2-3 on fire. Happens every day.

you live on a 2-lane state road that has a blinking light intersection for 'downtown'
at least my town has two traffic lights that do more than just blink 8)
Offer twice as many locations to tie a horse to?

Gee that's funny, I've worked at a vw/audi/porsche dealer for the last 7 years, and have never seen a vw with fire damage. Hmm. I must be blind.

That's because the car gets totaled out and they use the insurance check to buy something not VW. Most cars that go into the dealer for service are under warranty. Majority of cars still under warranty also have a lien (because not many people can buy a $30k car in cash). Liens require full coverage. Doesn't seem that ridiculous to me that you wouldn't ever come across a car that caught on fire.

me too. turbo M42 in a 318 hatch back would be fun. find the 4.45 FD or what ever it is thats super hi and take her racin'
-
VW people are funny that way, they really like having their cars dealer maintained even well out of warranty. I personally have never understood it, but it is kind of nice buying a 20 year old car with a full service history.
I have owned probably 7 vw's of various years and engines (currently a 2003 Jetta TDI wagon), mostly diesel, but a few gassers too. I have had a few electrical problems, but never a fire, or anything close to one.
-
I've owned more vw's than I want to admit, never had a fire. The aircooled ones I have seen go up a few times, but the watercooled ones not so much, its not like tehy are a british car :-\ Vw's are electrical issue prone, but bmw's and mercedes I would not agree, and I was a mercedes tech, one of the reasons I don't know much about automotive electrical stems from the fact as my time as a mechanic I was never really needed to learn because the MB's I was working on just didn't have issues beyond dead senders and bulbs.
-
Fysh, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it doesn't happen (it does) I'm saying its not the frequency that everyone assumes. Also, we do get wrecked totaled cars all the time, that's not a varible. The vw's really are getting better than they used to be. Vw has realized they need to step up their game to compete with the likes of toyota.

Except for the ECUs har har har

can someone tell me why these old school bugs are so quick?
is it weight, or power? its very hard to run a good time on German tracks, but these dutch guys come dowm monthly with some super quick bugs, 8 seconds bugs in the 1/4.
-
No weight. What weight there is is directly above the driven wheels.

Its cause they are fire prone pieces of VW german Failure. :-*

No, that was a Delphi body control module, and it just smoked its guts. I laid the extinguisher to it just in case. :-X

I thought you said the VWs ECUs commonly fried themselves when reflashing?

I was tryin to be sarcastic lol. I know nothing about it other than i drive mine and its comfy. Rocks and rolls like a damn river boat but its comfy
-
Yeah by fried I didn't mean literally. Motronics don't like firmware reflashes. I thought you were refering to the repo car.
-
Just watched the vid. Holy fuck the goddamn trunk hits the pavement on each fucking shift. That ass dropped like 2 foot.
Sounds evil as fuck though.
-
I've seen them flip off the launch.

The repo car != VW.
And, I have an answer for firmware reflashes:
Snap-crap battery charger, has a reflash setting where it smoothly regulates system voltage between 13.4-14.8 volts

When the flash goes bad, I am fully equipped to yank and burn/replace the SMD flash memory the Motronic (and others) use.

go buy a damn camera that works
-
No, I won't. Shitty pictures are my trademark. Go fuck yourself.
-
fuck you and your fancy (possibly BNC) soldering iron
bmws still suck, but the spec e30 series looks like cheap fun. went to go look at a stripped, running 318 earlier this year, only to realise that this is the last year they have 318s in the series so i didn't get it
-
sexy BMW... really the only one thats ever given me a wood. Junk yard I use to work at had a Ti in really good condition.

not going to lie, 2002s make me hard
one of those with a big 6 and a turbo would be fun

when i was a mechanic i remember a lead tech pulling in a 01 s4 audi that he had to jump out of because the electrical smoke. then on my way back from Sacramento i saw a 98 golf on fire on the side of the freeway... also about 2 months ago a 03 bug was on a tow truck and was just put out after a horable fire. ive seen more these are just the most memorable. not including the 60's bug i had to completely re wire, ya theirs not much to wire but its a bitch to re route... and just most of the vw guys around here are dushes, not as bad as the drifters, but stretched tires and wheels that stick out 4" or so, wtf that shit pisses me off.
