cheap as fuck, would like a backup laptop
-
I bought the $300 compaq cq50 that wal mart had on sale last year. I'm still using it, and have had no issue out of it. It's no power house, but 2MB ram, 2GHZ celeron, 140GB HD, its decent. Only thing I really need to get is an external HD, I have WAY too much pronz....
-
I NEED a computer right now, i may get this but i haven't seen the best stuff from acer.... says out of stock tho
-
check the daily special, open box shit, and refurb shit on newegg, or tiger direct...just an idea
-
nice if i ever really used a lap top id get something cheap like that. i got the computer at home and pretty much just stick to that.

thanks, im worried about acer ive seen so many with problems, anyone here use one?
-
I haven't personally owned one, but my old roomate had one, and with the exception of user error, it was a good laptop. They seem to have good customer support too, from what I hear.
-
not a bad computer for the price. processors a little weak and i'd be happier with an intel processor but honestly for that crackhead price who the fuck can complain. its good for everything that the average person would use it for

Netbooks are netbooks, they aren't exactly brand specific.

Meh acers are ok if you want a laptop that will only last a year or so lol. A friend of mine has ~10 acer lappys in the "parts" pile at work all less than 2 years old. I have been slowly buying all the ram and hdds from them haha. I do know people that have had good luck with them though so i guess its hit-or-miss. With acer though its heavy on the miss lol.
-
Well my hp lasted 3 years, the dell is on less than a year and its time to go.....
i would love to get a nice IBM but the budget wont allow, there was a thread with a lot of info on it a few weeks or days ago, i just cant decide if i should get a used IBM or something new...don't have any desire to spend much on a laptop...i need it to use the net about 12 hours a day and do my school work...nothing more...(while lasting longer than 12 months)

used = no warranty
new (even if shitty) = warranty
I have an OLD Emachines laptop that is held together with duct tape. It had over heating issues, so I epoxied 4 head bolts to the bottom to elevate it, and drilled holes in all the panels on the bottom. It's been dropped, stepped on, and used as a play toy by a 2 year old. The screen hinges are broke, and I spilled tea on the keypad last week. The mother fucker still works. It's a 60gig HD with a who knows what speed AMD, 512mb ram, running ubuntu 9.10. It does fine for what I use it for (mostly exploiting shit).

After 3yrs of oning one, my Acer still works well.
Just recently I dropped my computer and the screen went to shit.
Now I have it hooked up to an old Dell monitor and it works fine.
I may just replace the screen if I can find one for less than $50. ;D

That what happen when you have a cheap plastic laptop. It was not rigid enough and the screen took all the stress. Classic case of "why you should buy a IBM" :P
-
Yeah it maybe a classic case but this lappy had taken a lot of punishment before this incident.
From my experience Acer>Toshiba=too cheap a ;D
-
Its out of stock online but in stores for that price.
I dont see what everyone is bitching about, Iv never had any problems with acer.
Its seems like theirs always a, where can I get a cheap laptop thread.
SO SUCK IT TRICK SLUTS IV GOT CABLE AGAIN!
-
Acer must be doing something right they are Ferrari F1 sponsor. ;D

You know I've had mine for over two years now, only problem I'm having is the battery is shot, lasts a whopping 6 minutes off the charger but I have used that computer a lot, but also as you said
I do know people that have had good luck with them though so i guess its hit-or-miss.
I had some overheating issues in the past but its ran well for me, but as you stated I have 1 laptop thats worked well and your friend has a fuckin stack of them that are dead, so take it as you will. If you do get an acer, for petes sake, get a warranty on it.
