Ok, so I'm shopping for a new provider of all of this. I'm currently with Charter in the 55024.
I have:
Cable connected internet. Walked through the process I could tell you the connection, etc. but it works pretty good.
One phone line connected in the house. It's the business phone line forwarded to my cell phone, and haven't had a phone plugged into the jack for years= no calling out.
Basic ass cable.
Started with the introductory rate of $100/month, and I think it's up to $150/month now. Well, I want to add another cable line in the house and it's complicated, so I'd like to have a new provider come out, set up all my shit, and of course be cheaper. Is there a type of internet I should *not* be going for? Is cable the way, dsl, WTF does any of this really mean?
I think there's Qwest, Frontier, and who knows who else...
Hook me up, sniggles.

Coming from a guy who worked for the cable company (and had DSL subscribers as well) I'd say go with whatever the best deal is. The company I worked for is kinda small on the cable company side of things so if something goes bad shit doesn't get done as fast as it could be done. Lots of people seem to have great deals going with verizon, and although I've heard bad things about Embarq I know a few people who use the internet and phone with them with no problems, and just keep your basic ass cable :P

Yeah, I'll keep the basic ass cable, and business line as a forward to my cell phone. My problem is I'm not sure while reading these "Up to 20mbps" advertisements actually mean anything to me, cause I don't know what exactly I have now.
I think someone said they like comcast or some shit, but I need to get this figured.

You don't need 20 mbps, you would be fine with 5 or 10.

Just did a speed test.
4899 kb/s download
480 kb/s upload
Whatever the fuck that means.
-
- Cheapest broadband
- FTA satellite
- Unlimited cell minutes
I don't know who you have service with, but T-mob is offering a plan to its "loyal" subscribers for unlimited minutes $50 a month.

That means you have 5 megabit service. Is it fast enough for you? don't get faster unless you want to pay more.

SPEED only means shit when you have to download a ginormous picture some n00b didn't resize, or when you're downloading or streaming files/porn. Cable is generally the best there, although DSL can technically go crazy fast. They have 10mbit syncronous DSL service for peanuts over in some European countries.
LATENCY is really the cat's ass. DSL gererally is best in that category, although when you have unsaturated cable (unpopulated area) it can be very quick. It also depends on the network; Time-Warner has tons of fiber-optic lines, meaning pop. density almost doesn't matter.
The other issue that may pop up is torrent restrictions. I have Time-Warner, and they are known to drag your ass in the mud (major speed throttling) if you run more than 2-3 at once, and speeds are super-slow. Others like Comcast do not. Its a sad state of affairs when I have to use my homemade WiFi antenna to steal my neighbor's internet and get better torrent speeds - from 500+ ft away. :-X I also do that with the kiddie porn to really hide my IP, but shhh on that one. :P

Others like Comcast do not.
Just wanted to add, Comcast got in some shit with the FCC for sending reset requests when people would seed on torrents, making it impossible to seed torrents. Didn't affect downloading too much, but when you use private trackers and can't seed...it's a problem. They quit that, but now have a 250gb monthly cap. I spoke with one of their agents and was told I'd be charged $15 for every 10gb over, and so we're looking at the business plan for $90 a month.
At the moment I'm with a smaller company that's only available in the rural areas here. For less money than Comcast charges for 8 down/2 up with 250gb cap, I get 20 down/2 up with unlimited transfer.

I just booted me cable/lan line/internet from Bresnan I get charged 150/mo for all that plus all the hidden taxes, franchise fees, and like.
Now I use my internet and who ever's signal I steal using my lappy.
I have just cell phones and I'm getting a satellite service for 39/mo and getting more service. ;D

We ARE a cell phone household already, the only reason I have that one landline that is forwarded is so the business has a "regular" number.

This is almost exactly what happened to me. Except I had the service for 7 days. It kept dropping my connection every 5 minutes! I called the wonderful tech support, and get someone in India. Anyways they couldn't get it sorted out so I decided to cancel. I was told my final bill will be $45, which whatever thats fine. I got a bill in the mail for 138, called them bitched them out. They said don't worry about it you will get a revised final bill. I waited 2 more weeks, got another bill for 136. I called them bitched them out again, and they said the same bullshit. I wait 2 more weeks, then I get a fucking letter in the mail saying there going to send me into collections! I call them and I was very furious. They said not to worry about it I won't get sent to collections, and I should receive a final bill. I ask them if they can just credit my account, and I will pay them now. They said "That would be a very bad idea." Next day I get a final bill in the mail for $38. I call them and pay it. 2 Days later I get a call from the collection agency stating that I have to pay the $38 or it will go on my credit. I called Qwest, bitched them out, they said your not in collections, and they use that as a nudge for you to pay! WTF!
