Title: Holset H1C 18cm spool
Post by: loxx on December 04, 2009, 03:49:28 PM
Hey guys, I've got an H1C with 18cm housing (maybe 16cm I can't tell) ready to go on my audi 200 20v. Its 5 cyl, 2.2l and the heads on these cars flow well. I just wanted to get an idea of how it might spool. If you know of any figures from other cars on here utilizing the same hotside or anything I'd really like to know so I can be on the lookout for a 12cm from an Hx35 or something in the meantime if its definitely going to be too big.

This is just a quick and dirty setup for this car while I gather parts to do the real setup on a much bigger turbo, so I just want it to be fun on all the stock stuff...aka keep it down around 350awhp, only rev to 7500, etc. For those reasons, I'd like it to spool somewhat reasonably. I wouldn't be too upset with it starting to make good power around 4500rpm.

Thanks in advance. BTW Tom Sewell will be tuning the car if that's worth anything around here ;) (Hi Tom)

I'd post some n00b pics, but I'm in an engineering lecture...

spool will be slow as balls on anything smaller than a 3.0L.. I would say go with the 12cm housing at least

After you post some porn I'll tell you that mine spools at about 5500 on my 1.8L Lsvtec that is running on a shitty basemap so with some tuning it would probably spool around 5000... oops

Maybe you should be paying attention to your lecture instead of surfing rhmt? :?:

Fuck it, Run it. I would. I know on the KA 2.4 they hit 14ish psi @ 5000 with the 18cm housing. Whats your redline on that motor? If it 5500, I wouldn't, but if its what you got go for it. Then just swap the housings when you pick up the new one.

Haha thanks for the info so far guys...looks like 12cm is probably the best idea. I'll see if Goldfarb will sell me a housing by itself. I'm pretty sure they wont though :(

I may just try the 18cm out for the hell of it until I can find a smaller one, but I'll expect to be disappointed so I don't feel bad when it spools at 5500.

Lectures are overrated. I get more from doing the problems in the book.

bahaha love how this icon is titled "nog"  O0

Took the words right out of my mouth ^^^

redline is 7500 for now...might be able to take it to 8000, but I'd rather throw some valve springs in before I risk it. Then it'd be good for 8500. That would be gangster, but I'm not trying to spend money on this motor yet.

Get a quick spool valve!

http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/forced-induction/1077263-zombies-quick-spool-valve-testing-pics-nerd-like-graphs-6.html (http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/forced-induction/1077263-zombies-quick-spool-valve-testing-pics-nerd-like-graphs-6.html)

The PrformanceMetalWorks guy still is making them for under $200 afaik. I've read about all there is to read about them on the intraweb. In general, cutting the housing size in half reduces spool RPM by at LEAST 30%. Even if it was 5000rpm, you'd easily drop that to 3500rpm. People say it also quiets the exhaust when it's closed, and makes the turbo FAR more responsive. I'm designing a much better valve for next year, and actually putting together a patent application for it.

Funny thing about SP Racing theatening that other guy to stop his ebay sales, my lawyer emailed them regarding the supposed patent. To make a long story short, they've got nothing. If you don't put the patent # on a part, or provided it when asked about it, you're not protected even if you DO have a patent.

Or he could just spend the $200 on a 12cm^2 turbine housing.

I actually called Goldfarb up and they told me they just got in a new 12cm housing...$150

also, I'll be talking to them next week about other used housings they might have. I have an idea they are going to be less than $100.

I'm fine with that. More lag, less power FTW.

Damn thanks for the link to Gillett. I hope to find a housing for cheaper, but its a good backup. The most interesting part is that they make a new comp housing and 60mm compressor wheel...thats effing awesome. I might just have to stick with this turbo for longer than I thought.

When does a 12cm housing become a choke point?

did your lawyer also inform them that there are significant legal consequences for claiming to have a patent/patent pending when you actually do not?

tims turbos had a 12cm housing for 75 + shipping, so yeah i guess you're looking at about 100 unless you get lucky elsewhere.  :noel:

be prepared to wait a while.. I bought one from Performance Metal works, and 2 months later I just asked for a refund.. he may have been extremely busy at the time, but I was also getting a little discount for doing a review, so maybe that was a factor. Great idea though.

I was actually thinking about making some from 1/2" flanges from ebay, more for testing with people here. I've just never seen one on a honda. 1/8" around the rod should be enough, and they're rather cheap. The idea of a HX40 spooling faster than a HY35 gives me goose bumps.

did your lawyer also inform them that there are significant legal consequences for claiming to have a patent/patent pending when you actually do not?

Yup. That was mentioned too, in a more matter-of-fact way. It kinda sucks for inventers since the "patent pending" shit doesn't protect you. The email to them cited a similar patent from International Diesel (they're 20 miles from SP Racing), and that I was trying to get one for something different enough - unless their patent covered every possible itteration.

I still haven't received any info back from them, even though the email basicly said "last chance to stop me". ;D
