Title: My snowblower wont start, whats cheaper
Post by: TTC on December 09, 2009, 10:30:17 PM
Fuck sakes, old gas from last season, in tank didnt add stabilizer. I'm not surprised it wont start, the fucker better not be gummed up after 8 months. I lll try new gas and a new plug, any other suggestions? I dont want to take apart the carb until i have to.

Which brings me to : Whats cheaper? new parts for blower or some antique farm equipment.  Who are better shovelers; beaners or nogs.

on some of them, you can remove the bowl of the carb with 1 bolt, then use the straw on a can of carb spray to spray the main jet out. Pull the needle valve out and spray in there, then put it back however many turns out it was. Put bowl back on, fresh gas, and see if she starts

The newer Arens have issues where a gas feed "bolt" in the carb gets a tiny particle stuck in it's miniature jet holes and starves for gas. Ask me how I know. Happens on quite a few small engines w/crappy gas filters.

The other thing is less than stellar motors (non-Hondas) will not start with old gas. It's not so much gum clogging stuff up, it's the reduction of octane & combustability you have to worry about. Low rpm preignition won't kill an engine, but it will refuse to start. One time I fucked with a customer's new robinson/subaru engine for 10 minutes, changed the gas on a whim, and it started in 2 pulls. "Oh the gas? It was only a year old". FYI gasoline has a shelf life of 2 weeks.

BTW check to see it has spark, obviously you should have changed the plug by now. That's the numebr 2 reason customers can't get shit started. Old plug, or left the choke on and never changed the black plug.

Cliffs:

1) check for spark
2) check for fuel (ether starting fluid)
3) make sure fuel & spark plug are fresh

The carb should be easy as pie to clean and rebuild if needed. You sure the old gas is the problem? I've run year old gas before in a lawnmower and it was fine.

I was starting my car once a month for about 4 months with the same tank of gas in it...seemed fine.

Would really hate to dump a full tank of gas.

See if the carb has what looks like a fuel bowl with a plug on the bottom of it. If so, take it off, clean and work the solenoid that's on the bottom. They like to stick and not allow fuel to flow.

Yeh i got it, took the bowl off and fiddled with the jets. Put it back in and tuned it better than it came in the first place.

new plug and starting fluid

don't forget the yearly oil change, unless it consumes it

All last winter the damned thing wouldn't run without the choke on half. Hotter it got the more it didnt want to run.  Should be good now, im assuming it was running lean which is why it would stall less with choke on.

Build one of these:
(https://realhomemadeturbo.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fcache.jalopnik.com%2Fassets%2Fresources%2F2007%2F12%2Fv8snowblowertop.jpg&hash=91677dbe37a2b192c640d74ecfb0e95acbf5bb3b)

Using what ever engine of your choice.

Could be used as a new engine dyno at the same time then you can tell 'Bisi how much snow and how it can throw instead of normal bhp @ x-rpms.  ;D
