Buddy's 01 TDI takes forever to heat up, I know diesels don't keep their heat nearly as well as gassers do but his car takes no joke almost 20 mins of driving to get halfway to operating temp. He did the thermostat last year, but it didn't really get any better.
Any hints for heat now that winter is here?

Um, the car loses heat if you're stopped at light too long/stuck in traffic not moving, more so than if it's moving.
-
flush heater core really good and some card board might be needed but watch that you dont over heat it.

No, it's only got a busted MAF but we just unplugged it and it works fine. :-X

FUCK YOU!!

and a plugged egr system blocking off 3/4's of the intake manifold ports.

"signal too slow when greasy"
Only a vw. :P

I put over 100K on my TDi , it was always slow to heat up. Even my friends 07 TDi takes forever. I thought it was just a diesel VW thing.

This is what I'm trying to figure out.

Yeah but it runs so who cares. We'll fix it when it blocks off 4/4

This.

Best way to unplug it and keep it that way?

Pull teh egr and manifold and clean that shit out manually or soak it in something to get it cleaned out.
Also, Ive had 50/50 luck with that mass air cleaner on vw/bosch MAFs, its worth a shot.

Will it not plug back up though or is it a long process?

Get a "race pipe" and have get get it chipped so it won't throw the code after.
My 03 TDI heats up in about a mile of driving, and stays right at operating temp (90c) even when it was -35c last week. No cardboard.
-
Diesel geek lists a race pipe and just a plain vanilla EGR delete. This is RHMT budget, aka 0$

Gut the stock egr piece ($0), but you will still have to get it chipped to get rid of the code it throws.
-
Does the code trigger anything? Or is it just a code?
-
Just a code, and the light. Doesn't effect performance at all, doesn't throw limp mode or anything silly like that.
-
Awesome, hopefully this will cure the no heat situation.
-
Don't just gut the EGR, you will have to pull the intake manifold and clean it too. Gutting the EGR will just keep it from coming back.

On Fords (primarily 6.0's) I like to disable the EGR valve in the code. Given enough time shut it carbons closed (as opposed to open) and you never have to worry about it again. :mexi:

No worky on this car. EGR valve is what a layman would call the throttle body on this setup, hence it clogging and causing issues.
-
Oh and gutting it is worth about 2hp... :P

What's fixing the busted maf worth? 20?

At least, and fair bit of fuel millage too.

The mileage went up after he unplugged the MAF, go figure. Was probably dying for a while before it finally stopped working.

Most modern MAF cars respond in this way. If you can unplug the MAF and it revs smoother and runs cleaner, the MAF is bad. VW dealer will charge you $75+ for this fyi.
-
I am thinking about doing a maf delete at xmas, we will see how much time I have down on the coast.
-
I'm gonna try it on the Taron, my mileage sucks ass and it's pretty gutless.
-
To do a Maf delete, that actually works, you need to do chip it.

It's ok, I was kidding.

I was only kidding about just unplugging it and letting it rip.
I'm missing a GM IAT only because I have exams to study for, and no time to get to a junkyard. All the other parts are sitting on the desk beside me right now.
