every bearing on the main and counter shaft is just fine. WTF are these in the case? The VSS was missing when I got it, could they be from something else and just got dropped in there?

Those are the detent balls. There are notches on the shift forks that those sit into. There are two bolts (12mm i think) on the case that you pull out and they have springs in them. Reassemble the case then put those balls in then the bolts.

ill have to download a manual
thanks for the heads up

Counter shaft lower syncro appears to have been hot at one time or another
-
countershaft bearing in the clutch housing had walked out a bit or i moved it trying to get it apart

CSB is now staked, and for the record, there is 3 steel balls and a 12mm does remove the plug and spring associated with each ball. they go in after you assemble the transmission and casings.
another 4 or 5 years messing around with these POSes and i might give bone a run for his money
thanks for the help, nogs

Since that piece is not visible your Superman powers of vision must be awesome............except if Del Slo's are involved.
