What is a good source for learning about binary code? I've had to make changes to parameters in my mills' control but I don't have any understanding on how it all works.

You mean machine language, called binary, but always manipulated in hex at it's lowest level?

Start off at www.8052.com (http://), it deals with the Intel 8051 which is about the cheapest most basic chip to learn on.  Jumping from there into whatever MCU your mill runs is pretty simple... as simple as these things get, anyway.  I really do recommend getting your feet wet DIY, and then seek out a class on it.  Frankly, I got an A in Microcontrollers although, in my opinion, I deserved a B even though my feet have been wet for a while.  You might find that pushing bits around is frustrating and that you do not like it.

I have never met anybody that has as much trouble putting together a fucking transmission in all my life as you. Ever.

zing!

Then again youve never owned anything that makes as much powar as my pile of shit either. Ever.   :-*

No, but I have tuned vehicles (plural) that made more, as well as vehicles that have gone a lot faster than your boat anchor ever will.  Your point?

I took a quick look at that link, seems pretty informative, however it seems they already expect you to have a understanding of binary and hexidecimal code, I don't.

Do I need to understand the logic behind microcontrollers in order to understand binary and hexidecimal or is itthe other way around? Or do you just have to know both? I don't have a lot of interest in learning how to program this stuff at the moment as I am already learning as much as I can absorb in other areas, but I have always been curious what is going on when I modify parameters on my machines control.

Binary is 0 or 1, hexadecimal is counting 0-15.  You are used to decimal, counting 0 through 9.  That sums it, aside from the fact hex is represented as 0-9, A-F, to represent 0-15.

Everything else is opcodes, and how they work.  Frankly, I intend to retake my Microcontrollers class although I have the basics.  There's just a reassurance from having someone who knows the shit hold your hand through it.  I'm really good with traditional programming languages, but assembler breaks things down too simply for me to follow without getting confused.

I know I'm a bright guy, similar to yourself but with more electronics background, so I know it's just a matter of time spent.  How far you need to go is entirely subjective, but guessing how much time you have to spare and ASSuming you make a determined effort, you could know what you need to in a year and a half (for me 6 months).  I spent a lot of time on (and pride myself on) Linear circuits, but most programmers/Digital guys have no idea about any of that and get right to the core of the matter.  Most digital apps don't need to worry about a high sampling rate on analog inputs, and as processors approach the Ghz range they can sample automotive speed signals at a fine enough resolution that they don't need to worry about it.  Since this is a hobby for you I suggest you take the pure digital route and ask retro geeks like me about plotting Q-points on transistors or wtf people use opamps for.

What is a good source for learning about binary code? I've had to make changes to parameters in my mills' control but I don't have any understanding on how it all works.

There's the actual data, for which 8-bit blocks (1 byte) are represented as hexadecimal (two 16 values, each 0-F), then there's machine language like assembly code, then there's the most common cnc instructions for a part called g-code.

Parameters are usually just simple blocks of variables. If you know what you changed and compare before/after data with a program that compares code, you can start to see what parameters are where, how many bytes each use, etc. Then you can start manipulating them yourself with a hex editor, and eventually you'll notice a "grand design". Gaming is how I got into that - find which bytes control ammo, armor, speed, car weight, etc - and you could become a god online with Interstat '76.

One thing to look into is old-skool Nissan roms, or any older roms for that matter. They're rediculously simple and well documented, and you can find web pages with java apps that convert a new injector size or MAF value to hex, for example.

Nothing is better commented than the old GM stuff, if you want to learn.
