Title: Pressing out upper ball joints in a crx???
Post by: ratcityrex on December 14, 2009, 07:18:30 PM
So how many of you nogs tried this??? It way to much money for fucking upper a arms, so i was just wondering if before i take on this task i would ask any of you fools if youve done it. I search some on the web and everyone just said replace the whole upper arms. The reason im asking is i just got upper and lower ball joints, and wheel bearing for xmas, and i figured i would do all of them while there out.

some are welded in, some can be pressed out (has a retainer clip) usally 88-89=welded and 90-91= press but......................

if they can be pressed its fuck all, they are barly in there.

Dunno about a CRX, but I pressed out an upper ball joint in my 96 Civic in the shop press, then pressed a new one in with no issues.

the only upper control arms i have seen that had replaceable ball joints were aftermarket(stock replacement). you might be able to cut the welds and press them out. never tried it myself. did your upper ball joints come with new clips to hold them in the arms?

I'll post it again to make it simpler so everyone can understand (even the retards)

88-89 welded, replace whole arm

90-91 pressed, can reuse arm

OK, so mine is a 90 crx, So its not welded,  ;D Thats good to know

Upper control arms are from a 90 crx, hubs are from a 91 DA that have some fucked lower ball joints ans shitty wheel bearings. Ill use my step dads hf press and some short lengths of various sized pipe from home depot. Im gona attempt this sometime in January when I get back from all this holiday bullshit. I figured between all this shit and a case of beast Ice, i might get the job done.  ;)
And yes the new upper bj came with a clip.

Have fun with those lower ball  joints.  It can be done without the proper adapters, but it is a bit of a pain in the ass.

the last 91 crx i had, had welded ball joints. before i knew that i tried to buy upper ball joints for it and the guy at the parts store told me they werent replaceable and had to get the whole arm. it was an import parts store and not the failure that is autozone or anything like it.

If you find you have welded upper ball joints, go Skunk2 Pro arms, will be about same price.

My 91 EX had welded balljoints.

The regular line is crappy, these are the Pro line, been OK so far.

Only issue is I cannot get enough camber. But this is due to 96-00 knuckles on a EF.

With car only lower 1.5" I have .3-.5 degrees POSITIVE camber even with the BJ's slid all the way inwards. I've raised the car 2" in the front, 1.5" in the back so far.

I know have correct knuckle to rebuild and install, then the Skunk arms will go on the dual purpose CRX.

since we have both seen 90-91 ef's with welded upper ball joints, I figure we have time for both since we have no business workin on cars.

I recently picked up a 91 STD. I'm going to check it out today.

Anyone else dislike removing negative camber gain and increasing roll couple with those S2-style arms? I've seen a lot of euro touring race cars that relocated the LCA 1-2" lower on knuckle just for those reasons. I know they lower roll center, but that's already low on most lowered civics.

Granted you need b-joints, but ingals has never failed me. One set rusted badly on a winter beater, but still worked great.

They also do something with the tie rod location to get rid of bump steer.
