Title: Lenso VPD's on the street?
Post by: Joseph Davis on December 17, 2009, 07:11:30 AM
I know they are a super light rim @ ~10lbs, but they're still just a 13" unit which is where most of the weight savings comes in.  Has anyone campaigned a set on the street for long?  Being semi-common and Google turns up zero relevant hits for "Lenso VPD broken," bent or failure makes it seem promising.

I have a buddy who rocks them on an MR2, no issues in 2 years of driving. But he runs a good size tire (no wheel strech queerness) .

I am surprised you of all people asked this..

I rock the kosei K1s and they are a schoche more then that in weight and come in a 15.  They have been solid for 4 years now.  No info on the Lenso.

Why do you say that?

Those are what I actually want, have wanted for over a decade.  But they have a reputation for coming loose when driven hard, even after the paint has been scraped away.  It's a pretty common issue on roadrace cars where the high forces and wheelspeeds play off against each other.

And the last post is probably Jeff or wtfever his name was from the shady ass Import Builders now renamed a third or fourth dozen time.

Anyway, I know the rims are a form of awesome, and I helped put a few thousand miles on a set on the street, I just want to hear of failures.  Because they are labelled not DOT approved, and I'm wondering if that's a legal loophole they didn't jump through or if it's for good reason.

A great, strong rim I ran once was the SSR Type-C
very very light and you can find perfect used sets for 600-800 with tires

Cool, that's more than twice what I'll have in these with new tires, and they come in 15" as the smallest size.  Decent style, though, I'll give them that.

JD you didnt learn your lesson from driving "slicks" on the road?? :)

New Sumitomo HTRs are $50/tire.  I'll have the other hatch on the road in the spring as a DD and switch the classic Si over to toy status then, at which point I have used-twice roadrace slicks I can get for $25/tire until I know enough to merit new $$$ radials or fresh slicks.

i have wanted those for a long time too, is the reputation a real reputation or is it a rumor?
the only info i can find on that is from the typical honda tech fags.

It's real, talked to one of the locals about it too.  They are great on the street, but once you start wringing the guts out of the car they work free.

I have some Koneig superlight 16's on my car that I've had for 5-6 years. Only issue is they are slightly not hub-centric now, looking at the lip while spinning. That's with 40-series tires too. I highly doubt running 60-series 13" tires would come close to messing them up on the street.

I have a set of Dura light 13x8's that have the "not for roaduse" decal on them. My understanding is that they didn't want to pony up the money for testing the wheels to get a DOT approval. Since the product is such a low production quantity it makes little sense to have it done.

and why bother when you can have a CRX on 18's

SIIXXXXXXXX

I have a set of Rota 13x8  RBs , they were cheap and will no doubt fail at some point being rota's... but cheapness prevails.

I had these in 15's on my old civic DD.  Painted them black with BBQ paint and slapped on an OZ racing decal.. Sold em locally for $300..

i use rotas if anything.  kind of grew up with the north american distributor.  when i worked as a mechanic, my uncle and Ramon from cosmic were good pals.  i had the hook, and it was only accross the street from me.  i even got to try rims out and return them.
