Every time I turn on the TV for the past year all I hear about is economy is going to shit.. companies are reducing employees to minimal staff. etc.
So here's my outlook on the whole deal;
Personally I haven't noticed a change at all, but then again I'm just a college student that has always been self employed by working here on the web. My revenue still comes in steady.
All these sissy ass investors are all over my TV crying about the stock market failure; These are the same people who make (or made) tens of millions a year just investing money. GUESS WHAT?! too fucking bad you're not making that anymore. If you have a solid job in demand, and you ACTUALLY work for a living, you don't have to worry because as long as people need what you do, you're golden.
This is all fresh in my mind today because I was talking to a buddy at his shop today, he told me about the business owner across from him lost all of his contracted work, a few million a year worth, and ended up shooting himself with a note saying he couldn't go back to living like everyone else. That's sad these fuckbags can't suck it up and work like a normal person.

All my friends who moved to san diego finally left due to not being able to find work. All have 4 year degrees and were trying to get naything. All 3 moved back to the bay area and got Jobs in a month.
-
what kind of job were you in?
the people that are really hurting are the ones who were doing a job that wasn't exactly any kind of requirement to sustain life comfortably. example; my friend who was doing wood flooring.. guess what? people don't NEED wood flooring. All these people with money decide they no longer want to make plans for a wood flooring install since everyone thinks the economy is about to crash.
my point is, if he started a business people actually need, he wouldn't have a problem.
you can go take classes for a few months and be a nursing assistant making 13+ an hour
-
Honestly your insight is useless as your a student who spends his time in the web not in the real world.I realize that sounds rude not really trying to be but i dont think you comprehend the situation in the slightest.
-
Both places I work at have slowed down considerably. What really sucks is that gas went down, but everything else has stayed up.
mike, grow pot in norcal. Isn't there some county that lets you grow up to 25 plants legally there?
-

I've got a 2 year associate of arts degree as a biology major, working on my bachelors in nursing and then going to med school while I work as an administrative nurse. nursing and physicians graduates spend 2 years doing a residency (on job training) before they work on their own.

Sounds like a solid plan you have and im sure you will find a great career ahead of you.The remarks were not aimed at insulting your education/intelligence.

I work for a company that makes toys for the military. What failing economy?
-
I still might just go to grad school after I graduate. I don't know if I can handle putting off life that long, though.
yeah, that's why i'm going the route i'm in.. I didn't feel like going straight through with my 4 year biology degree, just to do another 4 in med school without a job. at least this way I can work 3 days a week during the last 4 and pull a good income

Some counties in California are up to almost 15 percent unemployment. Statewide its almost 11 percent.
The people who left San Diego all had 4 year degrees from San Diego State hardly bums. Moved back to the Bay area and they all got work not great ones is working at an upscale grocery store selling wine but atleast its a JOb.
California is really bad hell the state is Bankrupt that should tell you something. Cities are declaring bankruptcy its a mess.
-
op... imo, your view is retarded... you are just fortunate enough to be able to sustain yourself via your self employment. You wouldn't be saying this if you were selling something else that people decided it was a leisure item that they could live without.
it's not a matter if an individual is in the right field or not... it's the employer... not to mention the vicinity where one resides makes a huge difference also
i.e. SoCal... Nurse with like 30 years experience is having a hard time finding work. booming field right? She has to travel just to work and it's not even everyday.
I like you don't feel the impact on myself being that I am a gambler and I hustle on the side, but I am not oblivious to the effects of the economic crisis
another i.e. convenience store, opened in 89. survived the recession of 90ish and 00ish. hit with this one and may not survive. This person works every day for 18 hours a day cause labor is another expense that cannot be spared. Not to mention rent keep going up. Might lose EVERYTHING because of THIS economic crisis.
-
I have also not noticed, but to say that it means nothing has happened is naive. Alot of my friends and family that work in larger corperations are talking about massive layoffs. My software developer that has a full time employment for another large corperation said they just experienced 20% layoffs across the board with more expected. They all seem to have the same opinion that most of it is being caused by panic blowing shit out of proportion, but shit is deffinately changing non the less.
And do people really NEED the internet or whatever you do for a living? There are an aweful lot of jobs you can look at subjectively that it is not something people need so by your logic it's the workers fault for getting into that industry.

i'm sorry but you really can't say anything because your not out in the real world right now. There are lot of people in trouble and almost everyone everywhere are being effected. It really doesn't matter what job you think you need to have. Read the newspaper or the watch the news more on the reason why its happening. You said if your in a business that people need you wont be effected.
here a list of companies that went bankrupt

now some of these companies involved sales like Toys, Clothes, and electronics. Who doesn't need any of that??
-
It was said that it's the employees fault for not getting into an industry that is a "need", How so? Who determines what is a "want" and what is a "need"? I work for a company that rebuilds fluid pumps for power plants, steel mills, sewage treatment facilities, mines, paper mills, etc. I have been laid off four months and a few of my co-workers have been laid off longer. Last time I checked people "need" power? Did that save me and many others from being laid off? hell no. I'm not trying to piss anyone off here, but the fact of the matter is, things are worse out there than some of you think.

Since when has anyone here been worried about being rude? The OP has no idea what is going on in the real world. We have mexicans going back across the rio grande because the job market is so bad. The only reason I am still alive right now is because of guvment cheese and my family is awesome.
-
my mom has been laid of 3x now.... she keeps getting lucky and finding more work but its really hard for someone with several kids and a LOT of bills to go two weeks without a paycheck. she works for the trading floor at UBS right now and they laid off most of the people working for her... then her direct superior... now she knows shes next soon and there wont be anyone left to do the NECESSARY work they did... but the company cant afford to keep people around, all they can do is keep the top FEW traders/transaction specialists and keep hoping they make them a few hundred grand a day otherwise they will close down their US offices even further... and this is a company that grosses hundreds of billions of dollars. The big players are forced to play small ball now.
-
as i have been saying for the past year, and i will be saying this for the next 1.5-2 years. Economy is fucked up. But, the forclosure market it keeping my ass super busy.
when the economy does get better, i may be letting a few guys go..
-
I don't notice it anymore now that I'm unemployed, because I'm no longer in the real world either.
When this whole thing hit I lost about 50% of my hours at work, 3 of my room mates moved out because they couldn't afford what little rent there was, then the house started to go through the foreclosure process when I finally tapped out and moved.
Now I'm trying to find a new job and pick up the pieces, and so far it hasn't been easy.
Also, traders on Wall St. can make money regardless of which direction the market is going. The only thing that matters is if the market is moving at all. If the market is going down and they know which areas are being hit the hardest, then I'd say it's actually easier to make money in that environment.

Business has never been better for me. There is a big increase in criminals and a decrease in corectional officers to control them. We (as in the entire texas department of criminal justice) are getting a 20% payraise im febuary next year. I make correctional officer 4 in a couple months and that is like a 12% raise. Granted after tax and evrything im only bringing home $1850 a month, but there is a hell of a lot of job security in my feild.
-
I went from a solid 40 hour work week when I started @ the salvage yard last summer to be lucky to make a 12hr paycheck now. You would think a salvage yard would be making a bunch of money when people are trying to "buy cheap" but you'd be wrong. Boss can barely afford payroll because business is so slow. All the money I saved from my tour in Iraq is draining quickly and not sure how much longer I can be sustained by my pathetic paychecks. I would find a new job but its awfully hard to find something to work around my school schedule, considering not many people are hiring and the ones who are have no room for compromise.
As of recently, I've strongly considered putting my packet in for e-5 (SGT) and going AGR (Active Duty Reservist), just sucks that I would have to leave my friends, family, and school just to have a guaranteed paycheck. seems like a big sacrifice to stay afloat.

shit thats nothing here in cali.
i bring home somewhere between 3-4k a month and im still struggling here. Might be cause i have too many kids though...
-
I was making roughly 1200+ each paycheck with all the hours we worked (7 days a week 70+ hours most weeks) and then around November I got put down to 40 hours a week, and then come the end of Dec. they were laying guys off, and since Ive only been there a little over a year and were a Union shop, I got temp. laid off, now im on the damn soup line homie. :somb:

I FUCKING HATE ALBERTA, in fact I made a thread about it.
BUT until things change economically I am not going anywhere. As there are still good jobs to be had, even with nothing more then a HS education.
To me if you can't find work where you live it is time to pull up stakes, and look elsewhere. There are always jobs out there, just might not be in your town. I have moved no less then 5 times in last 3 years, it sucks every time, but to this point I don't regret a single move.
I agree that the OP doesn't have a clue.
I know more then a couple guys that where working on drill rigs making over 150K a year. Yeah they found new jobs, making $15/hr (working like a normal person), but are on the verge of loosing there homes, as they bought houses that they were comfortable with at 150K a year, and now the market has fallen to the point that even if they CAN sell they will still owe on them. Not only that but RENT out here starts at $900 a month + utilities for a shitty 1 room basement suite. So tell me how a guy on $15 an hour, is supposed to support a family of 4 if he can barley pay more then basic rent on a place that he can't even fit his family in.

shit. in the bay area, you are looking at 1200-1500 for a 1 bedroom apt. shit sucks. thats why i moved into sacramento, i rent a 3 bedroom 2 bath, 2 car garage for 1250 a month
-
Damn i rent a 2 bd 2 bath trailer with water paid for $390 month plus its on 2 acres of land so i can shoot my guns whenever i want.

i thought obongo already fixed this problem :-[

I feel bad for everyone that got hit hard in this recession. My family has remained insulated mostly because I have a govt job. When things get tight financially I usually try to remember the things that make me truly happy. Also we have it much better then some of the other countries, as far as standard of living goes. To marcj I don't want to pop your bubble but residency is longer then that 1. and 2 I don't know a single person who works during med school, not one. The reason is that it would make it exceedingly difficult to do well enough to get a decent specialty, and even if you did do it you would not make enough to make it worth it because of the limitation on the hours you can work. Classes run about 8hrs a day M-F, then you get to study to actually learn the material.

Things are wierd on the tuning front. I didn't do shit for three weeks, made $1500 last week just tuning. Today I hosed some viruses out of a desktop computer, and fixed an Accord TCU. In the morning I do some wiring and build a conversion harness for a Mazda. There's work out there but it's not always "what I'd like to do," or what pays best (I hate working for a living like the rest of you).
-
My company currently looking for employees with at least 5 well paying job openings. We need mechanics, mechanical engineers, IT VB programmer, machinists and quality technicians. We make hgh end seals for aerospace and the nuclear industry. Jet engines and nuclear generators are always going to need replacement seals. Like it was said earlier, if your in the luxury market your fucked.
-
i thought obongo already fixed this problem :-[
So he keeps saying as he spends the nation further into debt
-
everyone always say there is always work in death and taxes
not as much work in taxes nowadays :'(
-
Like it was said earlier, if your in the luxury market your fucked.
I'm in the luxury market, but my skillset is fucking wierd. People can't find Accord TCUs, and I can fix them so it's retarded easy to make $100 for two hours work. Most of which is test driving the vehicle to make sure everything's legit.
I stated on the old site that no real HMTer is a normal person, and if they remain flexible in the manner I have/am trying to then they'll weather this economy thing pretty well.
-
i guess i consider myself lucky to have two jobs and get 70 hours a week.
one is minimum wage at firehouse subs and the other job i just got is 6.40 an hour plus commission at tire kingdom.
its really tiring doing these jobs 70 hours a week combined and not getting the money compensation that i feel i deserve with executives sit in an office and smoke cigars all day and make big bucks because they know someone.
But im going to do everything in my power to make sure i have a secured job regardless if its not the greatest job. Do your job beyond expectation, let someone see you and then climb the latter.
-
Everyone else seems to be doing worse off, but I now have more money in the bank than I've ever had, I got my associates in December and got a job requiring it making $14/hr (which isn't bad at all for this area) and I'm currently looking for apartments, decent ones are about $650/month in this area and I've already budgeted it to the point where I know I'd be fine no matter what happens. Then again I don't have a wife/kids/mortgage so maybe I'm just slipping past where I'd be getting fucked.
-

...executives sit in an office and smoke cigars all day and make big bucks because they know someone...
Not just someone, but something. ;)
You see I make good money and I am in demand, not just because I am good with the general MS office tools, but that is a requirement, or because I have a degree, as I don't. There are two main reasons why:
1) I take initiative and make decisions, I do not ask permission, I just do it, and then back it up with what ever my reasons where if I am called on it. Right or wrong I stand behind my decisions and don't get wishy washy.
2) I am better with people then most. This is something I work on everyday, this gets me jobs, keeps my jobs, and gets me raises at those jobs. In my personal life I don't care what most peoples names are, and don't go out of my way to remember things, in my professional life I do, and not just there names I go out of my way to know about people.
3) This is not nearly as important, but is still a big help. I try to become an expert at whatever it is the company I work for does.

^Advice that will get you far in life

1. Everyone anticipated property values would keep rising.
2. Everyone took out home equity lines and bought shit they couldn't normally afford with their normal income.
3. Average people were buying second and third houses and pulling credit from them.
PEOPLE THOUGHT THEY WERE BALLIN', BUT THEY WERE NINJA RICH.
THEY HAD LIQUID ASSETS. LIQUID AINT' SHIT, UNLESS IT HAS A ALC.% OR SQUIRTS FROM A BEAVER.
THE WELL DRYED UP, WE WERE GREEDY, BANKS/LENDERS/GENERAL PUBLIC.
WE ARE REAPING WHAT WE SOWED.
BACK TO BASICS. BACK TO HUMBLE, LEVEL HEADED AMERICA.
We will be better for this. Oh BTW, we would have recovered pretty quick from this mess but Obama is a liberal chonch.
I am one of those people that was really kicking ass. My business was booming. I had enough money to do everything I did during that time. Hindsight is 20/20. But, I should have had more money in the bank, or stashed under the mattress for a rainy day. Instead I spent like it would never end. I ended up losing an investment home. No sweat, my credit score sucks now, but I'm still living and I never go hungry. I am less attracted to possessions. And I really like living without that attitude. Friends, family, and holding shit together with duct tape. Let's have a drink!
-
Am I the only person who works on the rigs here? Cause jesus fuck, I cannot stand this shit. Making $28.50/hr w/ $150 sub pay a day, going to $12/HR delivering furniture sure fuckin sucks LOL. I hope oil goes back up because I miss making big money
-
Obama is a liberal chonch.
+1
Fuck I'm glad I was one of the stupid people who don't have a 401k, IRA, or stocks. I plan on making some investments in the near future though, but just short term. Market's too unstable and can all too easily be falsely inflated with as we're seeing now.
-

i ran a sonic geothermal rig up until the economy took the sharp downturn before the election. my work was dependent upon people spending money, and lots of it. when their equity went down the shitter, so did my work.

get urself some skills and be a dependable honest hard worker and u will always have a good paying job.
all these layoffs force employees to keep the cream of the crop. and lay off the rest of the mediocre workers they might have skated with in earlier times..
thats why u cant be an asshat, layoffs are the reward given to those who are mediocre at best. niggas
-
Congrats, dude. Any specific Associates degree?
Psychology. Probably gonna do some online shit and go for my bachelors I think. Position above me in the company starts @ $21/hr with a bachelors, not a bad deal.
-
Thats bullshit, I outwork alot of the guys I worked with, they're older guys within a few years of retirement. What your not thinking of is us workers in unions. Seniority is all that matters, It doesnt matter if your a harder worker or better at your job thant he next guy, if hes been there longer your out.
-
thats why ill ride non union till i die. unions are horseshit. proven time and time again.
this yr i stayed over guys who have been witht h company for 15 yrs.
if u cant hang with hotrex your bound to drizowned
-
Yeah, it seems most of the well paying jobs here in PA are union, Though I'm not a union nutswinger, I would go non-union if I could find the same payscale, Im an Industrial Mechanic, not many places that need my skills are non-union. Most of your power plants and steel mills are all union. >:(
-
my company is the highest paying non union outfit around.
80 percent of our work is prevailing wage. but i dont have to pay annuities ect..
non union means hard work and skill pay not seniority and politics
-
My uncle was in a union at a steel mill, he got laid off and so did a bunch of younger guys (he's ~46 i want to say) who are like 70 and cant do a lot of the work. Ridiculous.
